FIRST AID AT WORK TRAINING COURSES Changes to first aid at work regulations In 2013 the requirement for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to approve training providers was removed. Under the new first aid at work guidance standard issued by HSE, the onus is now on the employer to ensure the quality of the first aid at work training provider. Employers are free to select a training provider that best suits their needs but they are still required by law to provide adequate and appropriate equipment and personnel to provide assistance to injured or ill colleagues. They must also ensure the first aid practices being taught are correct and up to date and provide trained first aiders based on their organisation s needs assessment.

Guidance documents have been issued by the HSE to clarify legal requirements and provide practical help to organisations when they are assessing their first aid needs. As a quality training provider, we are able to comply with all the standards and legal obligations required to deliver the right level of first aid at work training. This includes meeting all the requirements of the HSE proforma checklist which has been devised to help employers evaluate the competence of first aid training providers. For more details of the changes, please visit http://www.mohs.co.uk/courses/view/first_aid_at_work The right knowledge can save lives Workplace incidents where people get hurt or injured will always happen but having a trained first aider on hand can make a world of difference and could save lives. Our first aid courses provide practical hands on learning, combined with theoretical knowledge, and are designed to develop ability and instil confidence in the workplace first aider. Legal compliance Compliance with first aid at work legislation is statutory for all UK businesses. This legislation requires organisations to carry out a needs assessment of their first aid requirements, which looks at: hazards and risks in the workplace number of employees accident history lone workers or those who need to travel as part of their role This needs assessment will determine whether an organisation requires its first aiders to go through the three day first aid at work (FAW) course or the one day emergency first aid at work (EFAW) course. We can help you undertake this needs assessment. For more information, call 0121 601 4041 or go online at mohs.co.uk. Alternatively, visit the HSE s website at hse.co.uk. After successfully completing either the three day FAW course or the one day EFAW course, the first aider receives a certificate valid for three years. They will need to undertake a FAW requalification course or retake the EFAW course to renew their respective certificates and it is recommended they complete the relevant course within the three month period prior to their certificate s expiry date. In addition, the HSE strongly recommends all first aiders attend a half day annual refresher course. Organisations should select first aiders who: are generally fit and healthy possess an aptitude to absorb knowledge and skills can cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedures have duties that do not prevent them going immediately to an emergency We would advise organisations also appoint an additional first aider to cover absences. 3

HEALTH AND SAFETY ADVISORY SERVICE Employers have a statutory requirement to provide a safe working environment for their employees and are legally required to assess the risks in the workplace so that a plan to control the risks can be put in place. We offer a range of assessments which can identify and address issues and provide practical and cost effective solutions, including compliance with legislation, regulation and good practice. Please note that we do not undertake risk assessments for organisations but we work with employers to help them develop their own assessments. Our team of health and safety advisors can offer specialised and expert advice on a range of disciplines including: Ergonomics assessments Noise assessments Risk assessment guidance Safety audits Health & Safety Courses General advice can be given by telephone or email but more precise guidance may require a site visit. Ergonomic Assessments For employees with musculoskeletal disorders, existing medical conditions, disabilities or specific requirements such as reduced mobility or age related conditions eg arthritis. These assessments can also be used to help people returning to work following extended absence. The individual is assessed to ascertain their requirements, which includes discussing any work related issues and spending time with them at their workstation to observe their way of working. A report is prepared identifying legal requirements and recommending appropriate adjustments such as suitable equipment, postural changes and task design. Each ergonomic assessment including bespoke report is 250 + VAT. MOHS offers the following ergonomic assessments: Age related assessments to enable older workers to function effectively, it is necessary to understand how they work, both physiologically and psychologically. 11

By ensuring that work is designed to fit the employee and their physical and mental capabilities, age should not be a barrier to continued working. These assessments can help by improving workplace and environmental design, job and task design and by minimising the physical and mental risks to older workers. New technologies and innovative work practices can be harnessed to support older workers and can include adaptations to machines for long sightedness and slower reaction times. Health & Safety Courses Special attention is given to solutions for manual handling tasks and avoiding extremely heavy physical work and excessively hot working environments. DSE workstation assessments sitting at a computer for long periods, with incorrect posture or poorly positioned equipment, may cause back pain or RSI (repetitive strain injury). All aspects of the workstation are considered, including how each employee works and the position of equipment and furniture. Changes can be made immediately following the assessment, including advice on posture and body use. Vehicle assessments driving long distances may cause back problems which, if left untreated, could lead to chronic disability. A report identifying legal requirements, effective solutions, design advice and, where appropriate, equipment suppliers, is then provided. Workplace assessments these assessments offer practical and cost effective solutions to ergonomic problems and workplace injuries and provide advice on legal compliance, regulation and good practice. A report identifying legal requirements, effective solutions, design advice and, where appropriate, equipment suppliers, is then provided. Noise Assessments The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 stipulate noise assessments must be carried out for any workplace likely to produce more than 80dB. To meet these regulations you might also need: access to specialist practitioners guidance through the new Physical Agents Directive advice on creating a hearing conservation programme health surveillance by legislation 12

Using specialised audiometry equipment onsite, we can assess and effectively manage safe noise levels in a workplace. of a noise assessment including bespoke report is 420 + VAT per day (pro rata). We can also provide health surveillance via the occupational health side of our business. Please contact us for further information.
