A Message from the Key 3 We would like to thank all the individuals and businesses who have provided support to the 2014 Scouting programs in the Redwood Empire Council (REC), Boy Scouts of America, serving Mendocino and Sonoma counties. It is through your commitment of time, leadership and monetary resources that we provide the youth of our community an opportunity to learn to lead their lives using the guidelines of the Scout Oath and Law. During the 2014 year REC fully implemented the Journey to Excellence (JTE) Program. We have incorporated JTE in to all of our activities and used its national performance standards and guidance to build on our strong points and improve our program where needed. During 2014 we completed the process of writing our initial five-year plan and establishing program and operational goals, including financial requirements. The five-year plan was then updated to add 2019. The 2015 budget has been compiled based on our five-year financial plan. Through the joint efforts of our staff and volunteers in 2014, Redwood Empire Council is much stronger and remains focused on maintaining youth programs that are of the highest quality, while remaining affordable to all families in the communities we serve. REC provides youth with the opportunity to learn and experience life through a broad spectrum of programs designed to provide something of interest for every youth. Our programs are carried out with the belief that Scouting MUST BE FUN and enjoyable if they are to be effective. The same must be said for the experiences our adult leaders have in the Scouting world. We will endeavor to keep this promise. COMMUNITY SUPPORT BSA NORTH STAR AWARD The North Star Award is awarded by the National Court of Honor to honor non-scouters for significant contributions to the BSA at all levels. The North Star Award, which is on par with the prestigious Silver Beaver Award presented to distinguished Scouters, recognizes a range of contributions, such as donations of land for the creation of new facilities or providing valuable professional services. In 2014 the Redwood Empire Council was able to award outstanding residents of the Redwood Empire for their efforts on behalf of the Boy Scouts of Redwood Empire Council. Shirley McDonald receives the North Star Award at the Redwood Empire Holiday Gala The North Star Award Gary Heck and Susan celebrate his receiving of the North Star Award at Excellence in the Making Breakfast. BSA NESA National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award Herb Williams is the first recipient of the Redwood Empire Council Jesse Williams BSA NESA National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. Herb was honored at a public event on November 21, 2014, for all of his professional work and contributions and especially for all he has done for our Sonoma County Community and the Boy Scouts of America. This honor has gone to fewer than 230 people nationwide so far. We are humbled to have Herb in our presence. 5th Annual Excellence in the Making Breakfast a success! Several hundred business men and women came out in support of Scouting in our Community. They were entertained by Jim Rogers, CEO of KOA Campgrounds who spoke about what Scouting has meant to him. Both inspiring and humorous, he kept the early morning gathering awake and excited to promote Scouting Excellence in the REC. HOW SCOUTING IS FUNDED Expenses for local Scouting are shared by five entities: Scouts, their units, chartered partner organizations in their local communities, the Redwood Empire Council, and the BSA national organization. WHERE REDWOOD EMPIRE COUNCIL FUNDS GO The REC financially supports its Scouting units in many ways. We purchase program equipment, supplies and provide staffing for youth activities the council sponsors. We maintain scout properties with program materials as well as our Scout Service Center. We also provide insurance, maintain membership records and provide training for the volunteers. FRIENDS OF SCOUTING This annual fundraising campaign welcomes contributions from anyone interested in supporting Scouting through the Redwood Empire Council. For your convenience, Friends of Scouting pledges may be made and paid at specified intervals throughout the year. Please contact the Redwood Empire Council at 707.546.8137 to make arrangements. REDWOOD EMPIRE COUNCIL SPECIAL EVENTS Exciting events like our annual Excellence in the Making Breakfast, Holiday Auction and Gala, Distinguished Citizen Dinner, and numerous celebratory meals provide excellent opportunities for you to spend quality time with customers, friends and colleagues, while supporting Scouting.
CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF SERVICE Order of the Arrow Orca Lodge The Order of the Arrow, or OA, is a service organization and the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America. Members are elected from within their units and recognized as those who best live the ideals of brotherhood, cheerfulness, and service. Under the guidance of selected capable adults, OA members under 21 provide leadership to the organization. The OA has enjoyed a long history of service. Founded in 1915 by Dr. E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson, the OA emphasizes servant-leadership nationwide in nearly 300 Boy Scout councils. In addition to local community service, the OA provides service on a national level, too. In 2008, for example, the Order of the Arrow improved five national parks during an event called ArrowCorps5. In 2013, the OA coordinated days of service at the National Scout Jamboree, resulting in significant service to the Mount Hope, West Virginia area. Orca Lodge is the branch of the Order of the Arrow that supports the Redwood Empire Council BSA. Orca Lodge was formed in 1994 as the product of the merger of two lodges, both of which have a long and colorful history. Mow-A- Toc Lodge 262 of the Redwood Area Council was first chartered in 1944 and hosted its first conclave in 1954 at Elk River Scout Camp. Cabrosha Lodge 537 was first chartered in 1959 and hosted its first conclave in 1967 at the City of Ukiah Municipal Park. Centuries of Service The National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) is the premier event of the Order of the Arrow, and is Scouting's second-largest national event. In 2015, 15,000 Arrowmen from across our nation will gather for an inspirational and unforgettable experience full of fellowship, training, adventure, and fun!
