NYSFAAA Region III March 17, 2017 Onondaga Community College The meeting started at 10:05a.m. with a welcome by president, Kathy Flaherty, and treasurer, Kevin Shults. Thank you to Kevin for hosting the region meeting. Housekeeping information was provided by Kevin. Introductions were done by all who attend. Approval of minutes Motion: A motion was made by Nancy Teodecki, seconded by Allison Cass, to approve the minutes from the last region meeting on December 8, 2016. A vote was taken with all in favor, no oppositions, and no abstentions. Treasurer Report (Kevin Shults) Balance = $4779.17 Payment made for Christmas party and Le Moyne College for past meetings Ordered new checks Executive Council Update (LaSonya Griggs / Darrin Rooker) Last meeting held in February in Albany o Seven made it to the actual meeting due to the weather o Legislative meeting that Tuesday Signed contract with Iron Bridge Resources for webinars Discussed TAP reform white paper-increase in TAP award Loss of George Chin o Vote to rename the NYSFAAA scholarship to the NYSFAAA George Chin Memorial Scholarship. o His family overwhelmed with the support from NYSFAAA. Past President o Discussed elections-regional reps, treasurer elect, and president elect o Reviewed governance committee and long range plan o EASFAAA Update-last met in October and next conference May 7-10 in Vermont 1 st Vice President o New York Methodist Hospital Center for Allied Health Education approved a an active member of NYSFAAA o SAY YES Buffalo approved as an affiliate member of NYSFAAA o 1156 members o Working on outstanding dues
Conference 2016 o $1200.00 loss from conference o $5000.00 credit at Turning Store-we could use that credit if we decided to have the conference there again 2 nd Vice President o Redesign of website-new layout o Working on state wide training Revenue sharing checks going out Conference 2017 o October 10 th -12th in Terrytown, NY o Theme-Whole new world o Working on program o Need session proposals Legislative visits o 25 total visit on Advocacy Day in February o Very interested in what we had to sat o Focusing on increasing TAP instead of focus on proposed state scholarship o Would like to see all students benefit Darrin heading to Albany for TAP task force any concerns with TAP processing, please reach out to Darrin o Students approved but not on a roster-boils down to IVP o Still true that HESC sending weekly notifications? o Use FAFSA for calculating o Multiple schedules o Change independent questions to mirror FAFSA Conference 2018 o Region 3 approved to host in Syracuse area o Still researching two sites: Turning Stone Casino and Syracuse Marriott Downtown o Toured the Syracuse Marriott Downtown twice Received proposal and going to review Facilities are very nice Confirming number of bathrooms with the building construction o Will have more information on the site next month o Question to review: Will there be an issue during the time of the conference and the construction/closure of 81? o Question to review: What hotel for overflow? Construction at nearby hotel may not happen as planned. o Question to review: Parking for banquet dinner? o Comment: State has policy of 25 miles from work for driving to location vs staying at the conference site. Hope more people downstate will stay at hotel as we may not see many locals staying.
Committee Updates (Kathy Flaherty) Elections o Executive Council representatives o Pat Johnson will reach out to everyone soon Award Committee o Dawn Langdon is no longer the representative for our region o Need new awards representative from our region please see Kathy if you are interested Scholarship Committee o Jackie Darque is the representative from our region o Looking for additional representatives please see Kathy if you are interested Membership Committee o Kevin reported that last year goal was around 1300 o 452 members did not renew o Goal is still to be around 1300 in members o Comment: Reach out to retiree members (we have a total of 21) Novice June 4 th -8 th Change in chair of committee Theresa has to step down and Lisa Simpson is now stepping up as chair What is on your mind? DRT not working-concerns that more are flagged because they could not download the tax information-concerns at Community Colleges Non-filers-some institutions have the form on their website partially filled out and others provide a link to the form 399-very labor intensive but need to remember this is only for one year APTS-issue with filling out the forms Campus based work study-what does the future hold-some institutions use federal work study funds for their graduate students Reach out to your local representatives and them know how you feel Training April 19 th Unusual Enrollment June 15 th Unusual Eligibility Future Meetings May 5 th Main Campus In Dryden June 15 th location TBD-go to with training
