What Other Therapists Are Saying I find that many courses related to dementia are very basic and don't meet my needs. This was exactly the type of information and additional education/critical thinking I need to progress. Thank you! 2010 Attendee I feel more confident about treatment planning and cognitive assessment with this population and empowered to go back with real knowledge of how to begin change. 2010 Attendee The energy the Instructors bring to the topic of dementia care is infectious and inspiring. I know it won't happen overnight, but you've really given us some great tools and knowledge to change lives for our dementia residents and their care partners. 2010 Attendee Who Should Attend? 2 Information is geared to those with a general working knowledge of current practice trends and literature related to the subject matter and with a focus on increasing understanding and competent application of the subject matter. In addition, this course is for therapists who have completed an introductory DCS Dementia Therapy and/or Allen Theory course and who have some experience implementing this model and the Allen Battery tools in practice, including: Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants Physical therapists and physical therapy assistants Speech language pathologists

Course Description Dementia Capable Care: Dementia Therapy Intermediate This course is designed for Occupational Therapists/COTAs, Physical Therapists/ PTAs, and Speech Language Pathologists who have some experience using the Allen Cognitive Disabilities Model with the geriatric dementia client. The training challenges the therapist to achieve greater understanding of the Cognitive Disabilities Model (CDM) developed by Claudia Allen and application of both the CDM and the Theory of Retrogenesis for evaluation, treatment intervention, documentation, and programming. There is a teaching emphasis on assessing, treating, and documenting for patients with comorbidities, with special emphasis on psychiatric comorbidities. This course uses multiple challenging case study lab sessions to build the skill and confidence of the dementia therapist. What Therapists Will Learn Understand how to use the Allen model to accurately identify a person s Allen Cognitive Level and to apply the Allen level to reimbursable goals and treatment approaches addressing deficits in ADLs, mobility, leisure activity, cognition, communication, and/or swallowing. Identify how psychiatric illness impacts function and cognition. Establish treatment plans to reduce behavioral outbursts and improve function and safety. Understand how to use the Allen model and clinical reasoning skills to assess and treat persons with dementia who experience psychiatric and other common comorbid conditions. Discuss methods to integrate the Allen Cognitive Level assessment and treatment methods into various clinical settings. Identify key documentation elements for reimbursement. 3
