At the Board Meeting held on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 7 p.m., the Trustees: HEARD: A presentation about Student Success initiatives by Student Achievement Consultant Jane Flynn-Sammut and Superintendent of Schools Tim Moloney. The two spoke about the success of the School College Work Initiative, which assists secondary students in the completion of their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and successful transition to college, and the work being done at the Board s four Centres for Success. St. Stephen Catholic Secondary School Principal Mark Joly and Teacher Tanya Berezuk talked about how this initiative has made a major impact on students involved at their school and St. Stephen student Katherine Armstrong made an impassioned speech, outlining how the program helped her turn her academic career around. A presentation about New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL) by Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School Principal Frank Bradica. Mother Teresa is among six PVNC schools that are part of a three-year NPDL project. Mr. Bradica said the initiative is leading to improved student engagement by fostering student voice through collaborative inquiry, partnering with parents in learning, creating new learning environments and leveraging technology. The election of new PVNCCDSB Student Trustee Gordon McLaughlin of St. Peter Catholic Secondary School, who will take over from outgoing Student Trustee Courtney Armstrong of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School when her current term ends July 31. APPROVED: The proposed Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School student trip to Algonquin Park, on May 25 to May 28, 2015, in principle. The proposed Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School student trip to Germany, Switzerland and Italy, on March 10 to March 19, 2016, in principle. The proposed Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School student trip to Kawartha Highlands Park, on June 5 to June 7, 2015, in principle.

#PVNClearns Math Olympics Mathletes flex brain muscles during 8th annual competition Students from our Catholic schools put their problem solving skills to the test when more than 80 students participated in the eighth annual Ontario Mathematics Olympics on Friday, April 24, 2015 at the Catholic Education Centre. The competition, which began eight years ago, proved so popular for Grade 7 and 8 students that the board added a parallel competition for Grade 5 and 6 students, now in its third year. Schools in all four regions of the board Peterborough, Northumberland, Clarington, and the City of Kawartha Lakes sent teams of four students (two male and two female) to compete for the championship. Problem solving was the focus of the day. Students needed to exercise creative thinking and exploration using hands-on materials as they competed in events that spanned all five strands of Mathematics: Number Sense, Patterning and Algebra, Geometry, Data Management and Measurement. The Math Olympics gives students the opportunity to showcase their mathematical thinking while spending the day engaged in collaborative problem solving, said Sandra Connolly, Student Achievement Consultant in Learning Support Services.

Collaboration and creativity were on display Thursday, April 23, 2015 as Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board students participated in Think Bowl 2015 held at the Catholic Education Centre. Think Bowl is a problem solving challenge that allows students to collaboratively and creatively address a problem and present a solution through drama. Teams of four students at each of the Junior (grades 4 6) and Intermediate (grades 7 8) levels call upon each other s thinking skills to creatively solve a given problem. Students exercised higher level thinking skills in an atmosphere of fun and creativity while presenting their solution through drama to their peers, teachers and parents. Think Bowl is an opportunity for students to work with a big idea Think Bowl 2015 and put their problem solving skills to work, says Jonathan Berlingeri, Student Achievement Consultant in Learning Support Services. Students get the chance to spend a whole day tackling one problem, to work in groups and come up with a #PVNCleads creative solution to a problem. This type of learning stretches student thinking, providing them with an opportunity to address a real world problem and consider the solutions offered by their peers. It was a special drum roll for St. Mary s Elementary in Campbellford during a recent assembly to help celebrate a $10,000 MusiCounts grant that will bolster the school s music program. The grant helped the school purchase a Djembe drum, acoustic guitars, a bass guitar, congos, bongo drums, recorders, saxophones, trumpets and more. Principal Virginia Marini credits music teacher Paula Kirkland for a lot of hard work in pursuing the grant from MusiCounts, Canada s music education charity.

St Mary s choirs earn invitation to Carnegie Hall Congratulations go out to both St. Mary Catholic Secondary School choirs. The Singers and the Treblemakers competed in the Toronto Heritage Festival last weekend. The Treblemakers received the Adjudicators Award for Choral Excellence and another award for Top Mark/Outstanding Choral Group. The Choirs also had an amazing experience singing at the Ed Mirvish Theatre to a hushed crowd and both have an invitation to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York City next year. Earlier in April, the Treblemakers travelled to L.A. where the choir received a gold rating at the Heritage Festival of Gold. They will participate through invitation only in Music Fest Canada in Toronto on May 13. #PVNCserves Light it up Blue: Holy Cross raises $2,350 for Autism services In support of World Autism Awareness Day, the CASA (Centre for Autism Spectrum Assistance) classes at Holy Cross Secondary School in Peterborough hosted their annual cake auction for Autism Awareness. Cakes were donated by staff and parents and then auctioned off to period 2 classes. Good Shepherd CES celebrates Holy Week During the month of April, Good Shepherd Catholic Elementary School in Courtice celebrated Holy Week with several events including a dramatic presentation of the Stations of the Cross by Mr. Moriarty s Grade 8 drama class. Mrs. McDaniel helped her students explore the meaning of the last supper and the washing of feet by our Lord. Mrs. McDaniel washed the feet of all her students. It was a very powerful event in the classroom. The class raised $2,350 for Alternative Community Supports to help make their programs more affordable and accessible for Holy Cross graduates from our CASA and Learning for Life programs. Students and staff across the board also wore blue to support autism awareness.
