Eastern University/Holy Family University/Immaculata University/Neumann College ~Summer 2007 A Message from the President... 2007~2008 reetings to the members of the Delta Tau At-Large Chapter! Also, G a special welcome to our new members, inducted at our 27th Annual Ceremony on April 22, 2007 at Eastern University. In celebrating superior achievement, leadership qualities, creative work, and high professional standards, the new inductees were given encouraging words by our keynote speaker, Anne C. Muller, Region 12 Mentorship Chair for Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI). As my tenure as President draws to a close, I want to share my reflections of being a member of this chapter and the incredible influence it has had on my life. I became actively involved in 1996 when the chapter was seeking a vice president for Holy Family and I wrote myself in (voluntarily!) as a write-in candidate. A very warm and welcoming executive board greeted me as the new kid on the block. At that time, our chapter consisted of two schools and our executive board was comprised of nursing educators, students, and largely clinicians. Not long after, Mary Wombwell suggested that I apply for a leadership extern program with the international branch of STTI. I had just started my masters program and continued to work per diem and thought, why not? It couldn t hurt and I probably won t be chosen. Sure enough, I was selected and had the opportunity to work with nursing leaders from around the world. This was exciting, especially as a student in sponge mode soaking up every opportunity to learn. Through the years and the opportunities the chapter has bestowed on me, I have met many local, state, regional, national, and international nursing leaders. The many colleagues I have met on the chapter executive board are my friends who have completed masters and doctoral programs and have transitioned through several nursing roles, as well as life roles. These individuals have been tremendous mentors for me both professionally and personally. Our chapter has blossomed from a twoschool chapter, to a chapter that represents four incredible institutions. I would urge all of you to take advantage of the opportunities that membership in Delta Tau and STTI presents to you especially this year s Biennial Convention being held in Baltimore, November 3-7, 2007 (check www.nursingsociety.org for more information). Since Pennsylvania now requires continuing education, why not share some fun and friendship in Baltimore! You never know whom you might meet! It has been a great pleasure serving in the capacity as President of this chapter. I have experienced many salient moments and encourage our new members to become actively involved to experience the same. No matter where you are in your nursing career Delta Tau and STTI are here to support you. Again, THANK YOU for allowing me to represent you. May LOVE, COURAGE, and HONOR guide you in all that you do! I look forward to seeing many of you at future Delta Tau events! School Spotlight: 25 Years of Educating Nurses at Eastern The nursing department of Eastern University has come a long way in 25 years! What started with two full time professors and one chair has grown to seven full time professors and too many adjunct professors to count. 25 years ago, there were about 30 part time students. Now, all of the students are full time enrollment in January was 160! Eastern s nursing department has also changed with the times. Seeing a need for nurses returning to the profession, a RN refresher program was started in 2005. Four years ago, the Korean nurse program was organized when David Black, PhD, president of Eastern University, and Stephanie MacTavish, the vicepresident of Asian Affairs, realized that, while there was a shortage of nurses here, there was a surplus of nurses in Korea. In addition, a new nursing informatics certificate program was offered for the first time in 2004. In 2005, Eastern began its second-degree nursing program. Christina Jackson, who started as an adjunct nursing professor in 1984, believes that the success of Eastern s nursing program is due, in part, to its size. It s a smaller program, which means there s more intimacy and harmony [among the teaching staff]. We all get along well, and the students sense that. Elizabeth Wilcox, the founder of the program, would be proud to see the accomplishments of the program. As one of the first RN-BSN programs in the area, the department of nursing was initially offered in the College of Arts and Sciences as a traditional undergraduate program. Now, the program is part of The Campolo College of Graduate and Professional Studies and accelerated classes are offered. To meet the needs of the student community, the Department of Nursing now offers classes in Olde City Philadelphia, Pottstown, Phoenixville, Rydal Park, Valley Forge, Lankenau Hospital, Genesis Healthcare, and Pinnacle Health System in Harrisburg. Mary Boylston, the current chair of the nursing department, has wonderful goals for the future of the nursing program. We want to make an impact on the nursing shortage by educating students from a Christian worldview. We want out graduates to be leaders rather the accept the status quo. I would love to see a graduate program and a traditional nursing program. Submitted by Lucia Kubik Delta Tau Chapter-At-Large member 7
