Summit Academy OIC provides 20-week job training programs that supply individuals with the skills necessary to start a new career. Pre-Apprentice Construction Training Summit Academy OIC offers concentrated disciplines of training within the construction industry. How our 20 week program works: Weeks 1-10 (Phase 1) consists of core competency skills in construction: OSHA 10 Safety Carpentry Mathematics Blueprint Reading Hand and Power Tools Building Materials Personal Development Students then choose one of the following construction specialties for weeks 11-20 (Phase 2) and receive pre-apprentice certificates: Electrician Heavy Equipment Operator* Concrete Form Carpenter* Residential Carpentry Welding* Women Wear Hard Hats Too (WWHH2) Pre-Apprentice Construction/Carpentry Students working in Summit Academy s training yard SOME OF OUR TRAINING PARTNERS During Phase 2, all students complete Working for Business Success: Critical Thinking Personal Identity and Development Conflict Resolution Personal Finance / Financial Literacy Resume / Cover Letter Development Interviewing Skills Job Place Conduct and Expectations Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) 10 Certification CPR / First Aid Certification earned upon program completion Heavy Equipment Operator Electrician (*Offered periodically)
Carpentry The Carpentry training program provides students with skills in the construction trade through classroom and hands-on training. Training is administered by journey-level carpentry instructors with construction industry experience at Summit Academy OIC. Rough Framing Finish Carpentry Metal Studs and Sheetrock Concrete Formwork Over the years, we ve hired almost 60 Summit graduates. We help them create training programs used by their instructors, and in return we get graduates who are well trained in technical and job site skills. Residential Carpentry Summit Academy s Residential Carpentry (previously called the Residential Rehabilitation Technician) training program provides students with the general skills of the construction industry, focusing on residential construction. Hands-on training is administered by journey-level carpentry instructors and conducted off campus at existing homes located in Hennepin County, where students perform the work necessary to rehabilitate the property to occupancy. A lot of the hand and power tools I use at Layout my current job were similar to the those I Wall construction and wall repair learned how to use at Summit. I know I can Finish floor install safely operate the tools and can fix them if Job site prep and safe operation they break. Women Wear Hard Hats Too Women Wear Hard Hats Too (WWHH2) is a female-focused training program, developed to increase the participation of women in the construction trades. WWHH2 is designed for the unique needs of tradeswomen, including an industry network and advisory council as well as a tradeswomen mentorship program. Female - Focused Training Weekly training and group discussions on female-focused topics ensures students are prepared for success in the classroom and on the job. Examples of training topics include How to Work in a Male-dominated Work Environment and Tricks of the Trade, a 3-part series that introduces students to job site culture and expectations. There s this weight lifted off of me because I am finally able to support myself without having to rely on anybody else. Thanks Summit Academy! Heavy Equipment Operator The Heavy Equipment Operator program trains students with the skills necessary to operate heavy equipment used in construction, safely and productively. Students will gain understanding and skills in site preparation, equipment maintenance, efficient operation as well as grades and stakes. Safety training is administered through lecture, simulated equipment operation and hands on demonstrative proficiency on various pieces of equipment to include: dozers, excavators, skid steers and loaders. I became comfortable on Summit s Basics of Heavy Construction Maintenance simulators before I went out and Grading & Field Staking drove real equipment. I also learned Basic Construction Math about different soil types and the Loading and Unloading Material OSHA safety requirements of the job. Electrician Summit Academy s Pre-Apprentice Electrician program provides students with hands-on training in the electrical field. During Weeks 1-10 (Phase 1), students learn the basics of commercial and residential construction. Then in Weeks 11-20 (Phase 2), students learn basic electricity, electrical math and practice the specific skills of the electrical trade through hands-on projects. Training is administered by journey-level instructors with construction industry experience at Summit Academy OIC. Everybody at Summit is really behind you and wants to see you succeed. The instructors teach you how to work proficiently on the job site instead of Electrical Safety just teaching from a book, Dameon Basic Electricity said. Welder The Welder training is a partnership program between Summit Academy OIC and St. Paul Technical College (SPTC). The training will prepare students to enter the construction industry as pre-apprentice Welders. Training will be administered through lecture and demonstrative hands-on proficiency, focusing on the skills warranted by an apprentice entering the trades. Weeks 11-20 training is conducted off-site at St. Paul Technical College. My supervisor was impressed that I knew how to do such specific construction tasks Welders Math - measuring, fractions, decimals, & angles right after graduating. I just Blueprint Reading & Welding Symbols told them that I learned it all from Summit Academy. Concrete Formwork Carpenter The Concrete Form Carpenter training program provides students with skills for both the commercial and the residential markets. The course provides plenty of hands-on training and practice in the construction of wood and metal concrete forms. Training is administered by journey-level instructors with construction industry experience at Summit Academy.
