Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission The mission of Shelton High School Robotics Team is to promote life long learning for students in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills through participating in FIRST competitions and inspiring team members to be better leaders by gaining creative thinking, problem solving, collaboration, gracious professionalism, community outreach, and buisness skills to help advance their educational careers, their team goals and the Shelton community. Background The Shelton High Robotics team is part of the FIRST Robotics program. Started 16 years ago the Shelton High Robotics team has grown and achieved numerous presitigous awards. Many of our mentors have been with the Shelton High Team for 16 years even though their children have graduated. We have also mentored local teams and allowed them to share our mentors and use our facility for build purposes. One of these teams is located in Bridgeport, CT. Under our guidance they were able the Rookie All-Star Award in 2011 at the Hartford Regional. Impact 2013 we were semi finalists at the Granite State Regonal in Hew Hampshire and won the GM Industrial Award for best designed robot. Innovation Award - The Shelton High Robotics team has helped a local robotics team win the Innovation Award presented to them in June 2012. Engineering Inspiration Award Winner - 2011 Connecticut Regional Chairman's Award winner 2012 Needs Regional Entrance Fee- Each entrance fee is $5,000. Team 230 attends 2 regionals every year and hopes to enter the World Championship in ST. Louis (Estimated Yearly Cost: $15,000) Travel and Lodging (Estimated Yearly Cost: $18,000) Team Gear- shirts, uniforms, certificates, plaques, and awards (Estimated Cost: $900) Materials and Tools- With a new competition every year, a new robot must be created. We need to stay up to date on our parts, software, and raw materials if we wish to stay competitve in the fast paced community of FIRST Robotics. (Estimated cost: $2,500-$3,000) Food- for team work sessions (Estimated Cost of $800) CEO Statement This FIRST Robotics team is not just another club, it is a family. You are supported by everyone and encouraged to be inventive when it comes to your outlook on a problem. The mentors that support this team can be anything from engineers, to programmers, to animators, to mechanics. They help us realize our dreams and become preprared for the real world. We are able to spread the messages of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to anyone who enters our work room. Once you've gotten bite by the Science Bug you never want to leave. 2

Board Chair Statement One of the biggest challenges our team faces annually is maintaining and aquiring sponsorship. As our team participation expands, we need to continually support ourselves through sponsorship and fundraising. In order to attract sponsors, we do robot demonstrations as well as presentations on the FIRST robotics program. As a team, we raise money by selling FIRST lightbulbs and conducting home energy audits. This year, our team faced the additional challenge of time management, for example, we lost a week of build time as well as multible team members being unable to participate due to illness. During the last crutial weeks of build season, a snowstorm prevented us from working an entire week, resulting in many late nights for team members and mentors alike. Building on the success of our prior years, we were fortunate enough to experience an influx of first year members. With new members there is an inherant learning curve and much of the build season was not only spent building the robot, but teaching these members the process of doing so. As experienced senior members graduate, younger team members need to be able to take on new challenges and responsibilities. Despite all of the challenges our team faced this year, we were successful at our first regional competition in Manchester, New Hampshire, the home of the FIRST organization. This was the first time we competed in Manchester, and although we were up against a lot of veteran teams, we placed third in the overall competition and made it to the semifinals. Our robot also won the General Moters Industrial Design award. Our team is looking forward to future success at the Connecticut state regional in Hartford with the hopes of qualifying to go to St. Louis for the World Championship. They are exciting, because as adults we are always being challenged. The opportunity that we provide for our students to work with Industry mentors and teachers is an incredible one. Students interested in engineering and science receive direct instruction from practioners in industry. This experience helps prepare them for the challenges of post secondary education or moving directly into the workforce. Throughout our history we have helped many of our students go onto successful careers in science and technology related areas. 4
