What happened prior to World War II? When the global depression struck, many civilians blamed the government. Military leaders won control of Japan The Japanese army seized Manchuria for their oil and coal Four years later, Japan invaded China (the Rape of Nanjing) Japan hoped to gain resources from European colonies in Southeast Asia

Turn and Talk The Japanese allowed a military government to take control after the global depression. How is this similar to Hitler s rise to power? ANS: The global depression caused unemployment and fear. People were willing to give up their civil liberties in order to be protected. Germans let Hitler take power because he was able to end the global depression in Germany. Japanese let a military government develop for the same reasons.
