Human & Civil Rights Awards NCAE Members Please read carefully and follow the guidelines listed below which have been established by the Human & Civil Rights Commission (HCRC) for the nomination and selection of candidates for the NCAE Human & Civil Rights Award. Each NCAE local affiliate is encouraged to nominate a member and a student candidate for the NCAE Human & Civil Rights Award. For more information, contact your local affiliate president or the NCAE Raleigh office, 800.662.7924, ext. 205. QUALIFICATIONS 1. Only nominees who are members of the NCAE/NEA shall be considered by the local affiliate or the state commission as a recipient of the award. 2. The candidates nominated for the Human & Civil Rights Award must exemplify personal and professional growth, community service and civic contributions at the local, state, and/or national level(s). The nominee should demonstrate and reflect a consistent commitment to the betterment of humanity and the improvement of the quality of life. 3. The only organization eligible to nominate candidates for the Human & Civil Rights Award is the NCAE/NEA. PROCEDURES 1. Local affiliate presidents will be responsible for appointing a committee to screen the local affiliate nominees and select one to be submitted to the state commission. The local affiliate president shall serve as chairperson of the local affiliate committee to nominate one candidate for the Human & Civil Rights Award. 2. The local affiliate nomination must be mailed to the Human & Civil Rights Commission, NCAE, PO Box 27347, Raleigh, NC 27611, by Friday February 7th 5:00pm. It must be sent CERTIFIED MAIL. The postmark date shall serve as evidence of compliance with the deadline date. Failure to meet this certified mail deadline will result in disqualification. 3. The nominator must include: a) comments from named students, peers, parents, educators, and community leaders, b) positive examples of the nominee s personality traits; and c) evidence of previous professional growth, commitment to service, and contributions to humanity. The typed document must be double-spaced, using a standard font and size of 12. It should be grammatically correct and no more than five pages. 4. We suggest your local affiliate president or his/her designee review your application before submission. 5. The nominator, nominees, and local affiliate president will be notified via email. AWARDS 1. There shall be one (1) major award presented annually by the State Human & Civil Rights Commission to be presented at a time and place established by the NCAE Board of Directors. 2. The state winner can be submitted as a nominee for the NEA Human & Civil Rights Award. The Human & Civil Rights Award shall be a $300 cash prize, plus a flat wall plaque. 2
