The Archbishop James M. Hayes Trust & The Patrick Power Trust Scholarships (2012) The Archbishop James M. Hayes Trust Scholarship was established in 1990 by the people of the Archdiocese of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Episcopal Ordination of their bishop, the Most Reverend James M. Hayes, D. D. James M. Hayes James Martin Hayes was born in Halifax on May 27, 1924. He attended Saint Thomas Aquinas School, Saint Mary's High School and Saint Mary's University in Halifax, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1943. Following theological studies at Holy Heart Seminary he was ordained to the priesthood, June 15, 1947. Father Hayes' first pastoral assignment was as assistant at Saint Mary's Basilica from 1947 to 1954. In 1954, he went to Rome for advanced studies in Canon Law at the Angelicum University, where he graduated with a Doctorate in Canon Law, "Summa Cum Laude" in 1957. On his return to Halifax, he was appointed Chancellor of the Archdiocese, and in 1964, became Rector of Saint Mary's Basilica. On February 10, 1965, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Halifax, and was ordained Bishop in Saint Mary's Basilica on Easter Tuesday, April 20, 1965. He was given the pastoral care of the diocese in January 1966, and on June 24, 1967, His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, appointed Bishop Hayes Archbishop of Halifax. Archbishop Hayes attended the first session of the Second Vatican Council as secretary to Archbishop Berry of Halifax and was himself a Council Father for the final session in 1965. Archbishop Hayes was devoted to the work of Christian unity, and was very active in liturgical committees both in Canada and internationally. In 1985, he was elected Vice-President of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops; in 1987 he was elected President of that body, completing a distinguished term as President in October 1989. Archbishop Hayes has been awarded honourary doctorates by seven different universities. He celebrated 25 years in the Episcopacy in 1990 and retired later that year, becoming Archbishop Emeritus of Halifax. He has always been interested in the poor and underprivileged of society, and in the renewal of the Catholic Church following Vatican Council II.

The Patrick Power Trust Scholarship was established by the estate of Mr. Patrick Power to assist students who are planning to pursue studies in theology or ministry formation. Patrick Power Patrick Power was born on March 17, 1815 at Kilmacthomas, County Waterford, in Ireland. In 1823 he immigrated to Nova Scotia with his parents and received his early education in Halifax and Antigonish. As a young man, he established a prosperous dry goods firm. He acquired a wharf in Halifax and had vessels of his own engaged in the coastal trade. Shortly thereafter he became a director of the People's Bank of Halifax and involved himself deeply in the work of charitable organizations. Throughout the 1840s he supported Joseph Howe and the Reformers in the struggle for responsible government and in 1848 was appointed a justice of the peace by the first Reform government. In October 1851 he was elected a Halifax alderman, an office he held until 1854. He was also a commissioner of the poor asylum from 1857 to 1874 and a prominent member in the Charitable Irish Society. And from 1860 to 1869 he served as one of the three Roman Catholic members appointed to the Halifax Board of School Commissioners. In 1867 Power ran as an anti-confederation candidate in the federal election and won a seat in Canada's first parliament. He spent most of his first term as a reluctant member of the Liberal opposition led by Alexander MacKenzie. He was defeated in the election of 1872, then re-elected in 1874 after the resignation of Sir John A. Macdonald's government. In 1878 he left federal politics for good after being defeated in the Conservative sweep that returned Macdonald to office. Power was well respected in the community; his chief contribution to public life was through his active membership in numerous associations and his work on various boards and commissions dealing with education and the welfare of the poor and destitute. In recognition of his charities, Pope Pius IX made him a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great in 1870. This application for the Archbishop James M. Hayes Trust and the Patrick Power Trust Scholarships must to be submitted on the official application form and sent to the following address no later than May 18, 2011: Hayes and Power Scholarships Scholarship Fund Committee Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth P.O.
