1 INTRODUCTION Frank Moore of e DeKalb Rotary Club s Historical Committee donated e clubs records to e Norern Illinois Regional History Center on April 2, 1998. An addendum was added at a later date. Property rights in e collection belong to e Regional History Center; literary rights are dedicated to e public. There are no restrictions on access to e collection. Linear feet of shelf space: 5.50 Number of containers: 11 Norern Illinois Regional History Center Collection 230 SCOPE AND CONTENT The records of e DeKalb Rotary Club dates from 1930-1998 and consists of two series: DeKalb Rotary Club Records and Rotary International Records. Series I, DeKalb Rotary Club Records contain histories, membership directories, attendance records, group study exchange information, photographs and e clubs newsletter, The Pepper Box. The newsletter is e official bulletin of e club and includes historical and membership information and activities of e DeKalb club and oer clubs in e USA and abroad. Also included in e records are several plaques, a photograph album, and a scrapbook dating 1941-1942. Series II includes publications published by The Rotary International and a audio-visual program entitled, The Most Important Man. The addendum includes notebooks containing rosters, bulletins, membership development and finance information, programs, board meeting minutes, brochures, and oer records pertaining to e daily running of e DeKalb Rotary Club. Also included are The Pepper Box newsletter, scrapbook items and a Rotary International directory and centennial promotional kit. HISTORICAL SKETCH The DeKalb Rotary Club was organized on January 22, 1921 under e sponsorship of e Joliet Rotary Club. The Club s founding officers were president, W.W. Wirtz; vice president, E.A. Shetter; secretary, E.E. Woods; treasurer, C.W. Whitten; Sergeant at Arms, Dr. O.W. Nelson. The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster e ideal of service as a basis of wory enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: 1) The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; 2) High eical standards in business and professions; e recognition of e woriness of all useful occupations; and e dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society; 3) The application of e ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business, and community life; 4) The advancement of international understanding, good will, and peace rough a world fellowship of business and professional men united in e ideal of service. The DeKalb Rotary Club sponsored many projects and programs. In 1923 e club sponsored one of eir first projects when e outdoor swimming pool located on Sou Malta Road opened. The pool was located at e present location of Lions Park.

In September 1926, John McQueen of Kirkland donated land nor of Kirkland on e Kishwaukee River to e Club. The land, given in trust to e DeKalb Rotary Club, was to be used to establish a camp ground for Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations in DeKalb County. Totaling 27 acres, e Club built and maintained an outdoor swimming pool, six cottages, a mess hall, administration building, a halfway house, and six wooden screened-in shelters. The Club also sponsored scholarships for DeKalb High School students, foreign exchange programs for students, and Group Study Exchange Programs for fellow Rotarians. In 1944 e DeKalb Rotary Club sponsored e Sycamore Rotary Club and in 1949 bo rotary clubs along wi e DeKalb and Sycamore Garden Club planted trees on Route 23 between e two cities.
