The International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors (IAMFC,) a division of the American Counseling Association (ACA,) in collaboration with the Turkish Family Counseling Association (EADD,) is organizing a counseling delegation visit to Turkey and Israel December 7 17, 2017. The IAMFC Delegation will be led by IAMFC President Dr. Brande Flamez. The primary objective of the IAMFC delegation to Turkey and Israel visit is to build and expand upon existing relationships with Counseling Professionals, Educators, and NGOs in Turkey and Israel. BEFORE YOU TRAVEL Travel to Turkey and Israel Information and Tips Safety and Community Standards Due to the current political situations in Turkey and Israel and isolated incidents of terrorism, safety will be a top consideration throughout the delegation visits to Turkey and Israel. Although 99% of the Turkish population is Muslim, Turkey is a secular country with predominately European attitudes particularly in the western regions. Alcohol is widely consumed and there is an abundance of cafes, bars, and a very vibrant atmosphere in both Istanbul and Izmir. The vast majority of Turkish people are very friendly and Americans are generally held in high regard. Demonstrating the same social behaviors and courtesies as one would display in the USA will typically suffice in Turkey. When in Turkey, you are subject to Turkish law (if something is illegal in the USA, it s probably illegal in Turkey.) One additional consideration, it is a violation of Turkish law to make any derogatory statement about the Turkish Nation or the founder of the Turkish Republic. You will be escorted during all delegation activities, so if you have any doubts or questions, you need only ask. Americans are generally held in high regard in both Turkey and Israel and delegates will be in the company of a Turkish host at most times. However, it is always a good idea to have a fellow delegate companion when venturing away from familiar areas or if venturing out in the evening. As with any large city, stay in familiar areas and use good judgment when venturing out. Always keep your purse closed and valuables secure when out and about. Using reasonable precaution and common sense, delegates are statistically at no greater safety risk in Turkey or Israel than in most major American city. Identification - You will need a valid Passport to enter Turkey and re-enter the United States. If you do not yet have a passport, you may make application at most United States Post Offices allow six to eight weeks to apply and secure a passport if you are a USA citizen. You may obtain a passport more quickly (typically within two weeks) by paying an expedited application fee. Upon entry into Turkey and prior to clearing Turkish passport control and customs, you will be required to purchase an entry visa at a cost of $30 USD. This entry visa will be stamped into your passport and allows multiple visits to Turkey for a period of six months. Packing for the Trip - PACK LIGHT! You should plan on bringing one (1) suite case and one (1) small airplane in-cabin carry-on bag - which you can carry without difficulty. A rolling suitcase is highly recommended and should provide adequate room for your items. If you cannot personally carry everything with relative ease, you have packed too much! There will be times when you will be required to carry your bags, unassisted, up flights of stairs, and perhaps several blocks between taxi cabs, airport check in, train platforms, airports, etc. Laundry next day service is available at hotels at a very reasonable cost, so don t worry about running out of clean clothes.

Dress The proper attire for all delegation meetings is business casual what you would wear to work. (Jackets or sports coats (without a tie) for men are acceptable, but not essential) Dress for all other activities is casual. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for touring historic and cultural sites. Both Turkish and Israeli societies are very European in clothing fashion - however, we do not recommend shorts for men or immodest clothing for women (except when visiting a beach resort or remote area) in either country. Luggage Although most international flights allow one checked bag at no additional cost, many airlines charge for two or more bags please consult with your airline regarding the specific policy. Since porters won't be available in some places, don't bring what you cannot carry yourself (Re-read "packing for the trip") Money ATMs are plentiful in both Turkey and Israel and provide direct access to your bank for cash withdrawals in the local currency at the most favorable exchange rate. You will need to have a four-digit code, since the ATMs ( cash point machines) won t accept longer codes. All major credit cards are widely accepted. Dollars (cash) or traveler's checks can be readily exchanged into Turkish Lira or Israel Shekels. Medical Both Turkey and Israel are modern countries with first-world medical care. However, it is advisable to let your physician know that you will be visiting Turkey and israel. Please check with your health insurance company to ascertain the extent of your policy coverage in Turkey and Israel to ensure that you have adequate medical insurance coverage in the event of illness or accident, or require medical evacuation back to the USA. Bring documentation for any prescription medicines that you will be bringing with you, as well as any relevant health information (such as blood type, diabetes, special needs, etc.) Short-term health insurance is available as part of airline travel insurance which may be obtained at the time of your airline ticket purchase. All participants must have personal health insurance coverage throughout their travel. Food and Incidental Expenses - Expenses not expressly covered by the IAMFC Program are the responsibility of the participant (i.e. - meals other than breakfast, incidental expenses, personal items, travel for non-sponsored side trips, etc.) Breakfast (meats, chesses, cereal, fruits, yogurt, toast, juice, coffee, etc.) is provided daily. Cuisine is varied (and very good) and widely available in all price ranges. The cost of a sit-down dinner at a nice restaurant ranges from $5 to $20 in Turkey (a bit more in Israel). The cost of food per day will vary from person to person based on individual preferences. The cost of food is less expensive than in the USA, but you should plan on bringing money equivalent to what they would spend eating out at home. A wide-range of fast food (yes, they have McDonalds, Starbucks, KFC, and Pizza Hut - if you must) and sitdown restaurants may be found in almost every neighborhood. Delegates are responsible for all incidental expenses. Refund policy on unused lodging- Participants who arrive late or depart early, or depart from the group and stay at locations other than Delegate designated housing will not be entitled to a refund or credit for unused lodging or meals.

All inquiries and questions concerning the 2017 IAMFC Delegation to Turkey and Israel should be directed to the Delegation Organizer - Dr. Brian S. Canfield, email drbriancanfield@gmail.com or telephone 985-974-8405.
