FIND GRANT OPPORTUNITIES All discretionary grants offered by the 26 federal grant-making agencies can be found on Grants.gov. You do not have to register with Grants.gov to find grant opportunities. However, once you are ready to apply for a grant, you will need to Get Registered. This process takes 3-5 business days up to 4 weeks if you experience any difficulties. Search Grant Opportunities

Zada Haws Community Grant Center Cooperating Collections are free funding information centers in libraries, community foundations, and other nonprofit resource centers that provide a core collection of Foundation Center publications and a variety of supplementary materials and services in areas useful to grantseekers.

Boiler plate resources Local and state demographics and data Risk and Protective Factor information, usually collected at the state level by Mental Health or Substance Abuse Kids Count Education information: reading, math, science scores, drop-out rates, free and reduced lunch, school violence data, students/adults needing H.S. completion, etc.

Abstract Needs to be developed to present to collaborators prior to writing the grant. Needs to describe the program/project in a compelling way, it should spark interest in the reader and collaborator. Briefly describes the need and what will be done to address that need. Usually one page

Community Collaboration Build a Coalition Develop a Community Advisory Group Involve Key Leaders, Community Members, Business Owners, Youth, etc. Grants need to come from a need identified by a group Anything can be accomplished, if you don t care who gets the Credit Lordie Andrus

NEED How was the need identified, where were the statistics obtained? What was the source for the identified need, (Kid s Count, local stats from Police Dept). How many are involved, be specific, don t rely on national or state statistics. The need should be directly tied to the services described in the grant.

Part of Grant in Need or Management What meeting/group met to discuss this need and how they chose this source to address this need. You need an on-going advisory committee to facilitate the requirement in a grant to have identified a need and how a/the group plans to address this need and for the continuous improvement and evaluation Do not use data in the Need that you do not plan to address!

Program Design Tie need to the activity. Tie the activity back to measuring the difference made to the need. Example: if you have 25% of the youth involved in tobacco use, What are you using to intervene? How or what will assess success, school survey? Identify success, such as 10% decrease in tobacco use in the first year.

Program Design Logistics 1. What is the time frame? 2. Make sure you describe how students/ participants will access the services such as: referral, application, membership, how are they to be recruited? 3. Pay attention to the Kinds of Activities that are required. 4. The absolute Priority, Is there one? They will fund only those applications that include, the array of services required and authorized by the grant announcement.

Project Design Quality of Project Design Vision - Paint the reader a picture of the program. Jointly submitted. Other collaborators, MOU s Communication, How will information be disseminated? Program announcements, outcomes etc. Goals and objectives are tied to outcomes that are measurable. Outcomes should remedy a need. The outcomes should have measurement tools. How are the activities tied to the core curriculum requirements. How is the afterschool program connected to the regular day program. (How are the students day teachers involved in homework, academic achievement, etc.) What research or evidence do you have that indicates the approach proposed will achieve success. Timeline How will students/families travel safely from home to afterschool program?

Why did you choose this design? Engage Youth in acts of required helpfulness Provide for bonding similar to an extended family Be am optimistic, caring leader, counselor, facilitator Create and encourage opportunities for participation and involvement Provide more intensive intervention for those most vulnerable Assess strengths, competencies and protective factors along with weaknesses, deficits and risks[1] [1] Source: Emmy Werner and Ruth Smith, Overcoming the Odds, 1992

Why use a Logic Model To clarify activities, influences and objectives of the project. To help create performance measures tailored specifically to the project To enable project stakeholders to revisit and re-evaluate project inputs and outputs.

Components of a Logic Model Community Need Resources available for carrying out the intended activities Outputs that are a direct result of activities and are stepping stones to outcomes. Outcomes for participants and communities. Outputs, Outputs can be the count of beneficiaries receiving service, amount of service delivered, or number of participants conducting service. (How many students did What for How Long?) Intermediate Outcomes, These are the changes or benefits experienced by your service-learning students in the timeframe of your program. Knowledge gained or skills achieved. End Outcomes, These reflect the changes you hope to produce beyond the timeframe of your project. Usually achieved through informal questionnaires and discussions.

Logic Model [1] Need to be Addressed or Goal: Activity 5/19/06 Evaluation End Outcomes Measurement Tool: Measurement Tool: Outputs Measurement Tool: [1] Intermediate Outcomes

Diversity How will it be addressed by the grant How will it be measured What will be included, training, hiring, program specific, etc. Most grants have a requirement to address diversity

Budget Put nothing in the budget that is not listed in the program. If you purchase computers, how will they be used in the program? Tell why already existing computers are not sufficient or not accessible. Utilize not more that 10% for evaluation. An outside evaluator can prove more legitimate and cost effective than hiring it done within.

Budget and cost effectiveness Check it for cost effectiveness the cost of the grant by how many people will be served, put this in the grant. Make sure figures match and are correct!!!!!

Budget Narrative Should include detailed of all line items. description Explanation of matching funds must be included. Explain the percentages of salaries and where they come from

NINE STEPS TO DEVELOP A PROGRAM SUSTAINABILITY PLAN Identify and define the problem Determine and explore the root cause of the problem Describe the resulting need Define and clarify the described outcome Develop and share a vision Define the support needed to accomplish the vision Develop your case for support

Get it in on time!!! Hall of States Don t send information later, it may never catch up to your grant. Provide the required number of copies!

Electronic Submissions Register immediately CCR Duns number Practice submitting Do not exceed number of words or pages Can be submitted manually (Not recommended) Follow directions Follow up after submitting for acceptance

Final thoughts Use their forms Do not improvise, do what is requested Have someone not familiar with the grant read it for understanding and to catch acronyms and catchy phrases not used by everyone. Only use the recommended number of pages Provide a table of contents.

Good Luck If you don t get this grant Request the comments these are the answers, and when you write next time it will be what is fundable/ wanted. It takes two years to start reaping the benefits
