36 TH ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION USHLI MISSION The mission of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) is to fulfill the promises and principles of democracy by empowering minorities and similarly disenfranchised groups, promoting research, education, and leadership development, and by maximizing civic awareness and participation in the electoral process. USHLI is an award-winning Chicago-based national, non-profit, non-partisan, tax-exempt organization. The four pillars of its work are education, servant leadership development, civic engagement, and research. USHLI has trained over 900,000 present and future leaders by offering leadership development programs including: Grassroots Leadership, Collegiate Leadership, Students for an Educated Democracy, Citizens for an Educated Democracy, our National Conference held annually and the Student Leadership Series MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS For the last 35 years, USHLI has sponsored the largest Latino leadership conference in the nation attracting over 6,500 past, present and future leaders from 40 states. The Student Leadership Series (SLS) is USHLI's flagship youth program. Since 2011, the program has serviced 655,814 parents, students, and educators in 39 states. USHLI has awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships and internships to college students and partners with Ford Motor Company Fund, McDonald s Corporation, General Motors and Denny s to promote scholarships available to Hispanic students
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION RESEARCH USHLI has published 425 studies on Hispanic demographics including our flagship publication - the Almanac of Latino Politics which includes profiles of 50 states and 435 congressional districts and information on the growth and impact of immigration. VOTER REGISTRATION USHLI's 21st Century Leaders Internship Program participants have registered nearly 130,000 new voters, mostly newly naturalized citizens since 2006 and more than any other youth program in the nation; bringing our total to over 2.3 million new voters. PRESIDENTIAL AWARDS Dr. Juan Andrade is the 4th Latino in history to be decorated by the governments of the United States and Mexico. In 2001 he received a medal from President Bill Clinton in a White House ceremony for the performance of exemplary deeds of service for the nation in promoting civic education and leadership development. In 2011 he received the National Ohtli Award, the highest honor presented by the government of Mexico to non-resident Hispanics for service to the Mexican and Mexican American communities. 36 TH ABOUT THE USHLI The USHLI community empowerment conference has been held exclusively in Chicago for the past 35 years and is the largest cross-generational Hispanic conference in the nation. The conference is attended by over 6,500 past, present and future leaders including high school and college students, young and mid-career professionals, senior citizens, and public officials representing 40 states. The conference brings together leaders from every segment of society to strengthen their servant leadership skills, and features nationally prominent, standing-ovation quality speakers and workshop presenters who are highly interactive experts in their field of expertise. This conference is an extraordinary opportunity for vendors to meet consumers, universities to recruit students, constituents to meet national policy-makers, and for sponsors to meet future employees. This conference provides sponsors an opportunity to contribute to the development of this nation s present and future leaders and connect with a broad cross-section of America s Hispanic consumer market, which is rapidly approaching $1.5 trillion. MISSION The USHLI Conference mission is to train a broad cross section of Hispanic leaders and promote education, diversity and unity, and servant leadership. 36 TH NATIONALLY PROMINENT SPEAKERS FORUMS Each forum is attended by 500-700 participants and consist of panelists at different levels of leadership to provide a broad perspective on the featured topic. Forum topics include national policies pertaining to education, immigration reform, wellness and healthy living, as well as showcasing Latino talent in organized labor, government, corporate America and STEM. WORKSHOPS The standing room only interactive workshops are presented by real experts. Each workshop attended by 80 100 participants provides attendees an opportunity to engage the experts with questions and answers.
STUDENT (CLDP & COMMUNITY (GLDP) GROUPS Student and community groups who successfully complete our 9-week program earn complimentary conference registrations. SCHOLARSHIPS With $1.3 million awarded to date, 20 winners receive $1,000 scholarships and complimentary lodging and conference registrations LATINO TALENT SHOWCASE DANCES Our Latino Talent Showcase attracts competitors of all ages who audition for the opportunity to compete, and show their best dance moves on Friday and Saturday night. CAREER & GRADUATE SCHOOL FAIR Participants meet with recruiters from 20 states representing graduate schools, law schools, professional psychology, social services, theological seminary, public health, journalism, mass communication, software design, fashion and medical schools.
