Health System Challenges Aging and sicker population Millions more insured Primary care shortage Lack of preventive care High costs Technology: Not integrated Can take nurses away from patients 2

A New Era in Health Care Person- and Family-Centered Care 3

A New Era in Technology Adoption Huge increase in EHR adoption Clinicians and consumers using networks, smart phones, hand-held devices, and social media to exchange information 4

RWJF Vision We, as a nation, will strive together to build a Culture of Health, enabling all in our diverse society to lead healthy lives, now and for generations to come 5

Florence Nightingale and a Culture of Health Money would be better spent in maintaining health in infancy and childhood than in building hospitals to alleviate disease. It is much cheaper to promote health than to maintain people in sickness -Florence Nightingale, 1894 6

Florence s Coxcomb Chart 7

How Nurses Can Help Largest segment of health care workforce and spend most time with individuals and families Manage influx of older, sicker, and newly insured patients Develop and implement new models of care Provide transitional and coordinated care Help hospitals reduce medical errors and re-hospitalizations 8

Institute of Medicine Report #1 top-selling report Offers recommendations to transform health through nursing Re-conceptualizes roles for nurses 9

The IOM Report s Global Reach The IOM report argued that nurses should be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training. Limits on nurses scope of practice should be removed -- Dr. Margaret Chan, director general, World Health Organization, June 2015, International Council of Nurses meeting 10

Campaign Vision Everyone in America can live a healthier life, supported by a system in which nurses are essential partners in providing care and promoting health 11

Areas of Focus Education Practice & Care Leadership Diversity Interprofessional Collaboration Data 12

Strengthen Nursing Education IOM: Increase proportion of nurses with BSN degrees and higher so nurses can take on more complex roles: Coordinate care for different types of patients Manage transitions across care settings Educate patients and families Perform outreach and population health management; and Fill faculty and primary care roles 13

Strengthening Nursing Education Starting in 2012, more nurses graduated with BSN than AD for first time RN-to-BSN graduates up 112% from 2010 to 2014 (22,531 to 47,777) 14

Education: National Progress 15

Advancing Education Transformation Future of Nursing Scholars Program Diverse cadre of PhD-prepared nurses who are committed to long-term leadership careers Offers financial support, mentoring, leadership development activities and postdoctoral research funding Grants given to schools of nursing First cohort 16

Education: Nursing Informatics HIMSS Position Statement: Embed informatics competencies at all levels of academic preparation Promote continuing education in areas of EHRs and health IT 17

Remove Barriers to Practice and Care Nurses provide an immediate and costeffective solution to care shortages All clinicians should be able to practice to the full extent of their education and training Barriers that limit nurses from expanding access to care must be removed 18

State Progress in Removing Barriers 19

Promote Nurse Leadership Nurses bring unique perspective to management and policy discussions Nurses are the largest segment of the health care workforce and spend the most time with people receiving health services Nurses are vital to improving quality Yet nurses account for only 2-6 percent of voting hospital board positions Source: American Hospital Association 2011 20

Promote Nurse Leadership Nurses on Boards Coalition 21 leading organizations Pledge to place 10,000 nurses on boards by 2020 21

What You Can Do IOM Recommendation: Health care organizations should engage nurses to work with developers and manufacturers in design, development, purchase, implementation and evaluation of new technology 22

Leadership: Nursing Informatics HIMSS Position Statement: Nursing informaticists should: Partner with nurse executives to lead technology changes Support development of informatics departments Foster evolution of Chief Nursing Informatics Officer role 23

Interprofessional Collaboration 24

Interprofessional Collaboration and Technology Health IT and informatics can: Assist communications between health professionals Foster interprofessional activities and coordination of care across settings Create expanded networks of collaborative care Support interprofesional teams Source: Kuziemsky and Reeves, 2012 Interdisciplinary rounds at Women and Infants Hospital 25

Improve Workforce Diversity Nurses should reflect the population in terms of gender, race, and ethnicity All nurses should provide culturally competent care Greater workforce diversity may help to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes 26

Diversity Nearly all ACs implementing diversity strategies 30.1% of BSN grads in 2014 represent minority populations (up from 24.1% in 2005) 27

Improve Workforce Data Collection Need accurate workforce data on numbers and types of health professionals Available data inadequate Goal: Federal government should set up national health care workforce data collection Campaign: All boards of nursing should collect and report on Minimum Data Set 28

Data: Nursing Informatics HIMSS Position Statement: Nursing informaticists should ensure interprofessional workforce data can be collected and analyzed from existing health IT systems 29
