PURPOSE 1.1 This paper sets out for the Board the recommended staffing establishments for each community hospital inpatient ward following the re-profiling of the community hospital beds during the summer months. 2. BACKGROUND 2.1 Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group have agreed that the Trust can flex the monthly numbers of beds available in Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust community hospitals in order to make best use of available capacity and to have greater numbers of community hospital beds available at points in the year when pressures on acute beds are historically greater. 2.2 Aims of the reprofiling exercise include: to establish a profile for available community hospital beds which correlates to the historical pattern of demand for beds across the healthcare system in Somerset; to make the smallest number of stepped changes to the monthly numbers of community hospital beds to be available, and affecting the smallest number of locations. 2.3 Following the summer months the bed availability will increase as follows: Hospital Summer bed November and availability December Bridgwater 18 23 Burnham on Sea 20 20 Chard 16 16 Crewkerne 14 16 Dene Barton 14 18 Frome 26 26 Minehead 13 10 Shepton Mallet 16 17 South Petherton 24 24 Wellington 11 11 West Mendip 24 31 Williton 20 20 Wincanton 13 16 Total 230 248 November Public Board - 3 -
2.4 In line with previous Trust Board papers, each recommended ward establishment has been developed and agreed with the relevant ward sister utilising national best practice and professional judgment. 2.5 The attached table details recommended changes to the ward establishments for Bridgwater, Crewkerne, Dene Barton, West Mendip and Wincanton to reflect the increase in bed numbers. 2.6 In line with current practice the proposed establishments are core establishments and the nurse in charge is expected to use her professional judgement to amend these accordingly based on patient dependency and acuity, and current bed occupancy. 3.
