A Week full of STARS Stephen Mackey The fourth and last week of STAR started off with a BANG and only got better as the week went on. From the DaVinci robot and Pathology to Mock Clinicals and Neurosurgery to skills training and then to the Alumni party, this week was awesome. There was also some melancholy with all this excitement because it is the STAR students last full week together. But they couldn t have asked for a better last week together as a STAR family.

Baptist By: Stephen Mackey Week 4, July 11 to July 15 Last Friday, the STAR students took a trip to Ochsner Baptist to spend a day on its campus. We started off the day with a tour of Ochsner Healthy Back with Rebecca Courtney, and then we got to watch Briggs testing the strength of his own back! After, we moved on to women s health and the delivery unit where Jennifer Ducoing took us under her wing. There we got to speak to an anesthesiologist, tour the delivery unit, speak to midwives Kimberly Moline and Katherine Paxton, see a natural birthing room, walk through the delivery unit, and see a newborn baby. We then moved down a floor to see the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) and learned a lot from Paula Simon. That afternoon we all scrubbed in and performed our very own surgery! Just kidding, but close enough. We got to go into an OR and learned all about how it operates and all that happens during a surgery to run smoothly from OR vet Dianne Taylor. We wrapped up the day in the Clinical Trials Unit, run by Dr. Pukar Ratti, where they got to participate in some activities that used to be trials, such as take their blood pressure and take a test on how fast they walked. Overall, it was a great day, and we thank everyone over at Baptist! DaVinci Robotics By: Elle McCall The STAR students started off their final week with a DaVinci robot tutorial. Students learned about the benefits of using the robot for surgery, including reduced recovery time

for patients. Everyone had an opportunity to practice tying sutures and move objects with the robotic arms. After seeing what it takes to control the robot, the students watched a live operation. The students Skyped the operation room and were excited to see how the operation rooms are run and were able to ask questions as the surgeon completed the procedure, a prostatectomy, with the DaVinci robot. Pathology By: Elle McCall Tuesday morning, the STAR students took a trip to the pathology lab and the morgue. Dr. Jackson explained how pathologists work alongside other physicians to make diagnoses based on tissue samples. She described the process of transferring the tissues onto slides so they can be studied and showed us some examples of samples that a pathologist would diagnose. The STAR students then went to the pathology lab where they could see it all in action. Students saw tissues being transferred onto slides, and they were especially surprised to see a leg, a uterus, and a liver being examined. Then, in the morgue, students were able to see how corpses are stored and inspected. Mock Clinical Trial By: Ruston Keller On the afternoon of Tuesday on week 4 of the Ochsner STAR program, the students got to combine everything they learned in the program and give it real world application. They got to feel the true fulfillment of what doctors do: help people. Every week, they were given four diseases to research and learn about. The diseases ranged anywhere from

anxiety, to gastro esophageal reflux disease, and even chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In previous weeks STAR took a bedside manner course with Dr. Conrad to discuss proper behavior, ways to give patients information, and ethics of treatment. With this knowledge, along with much more, and help from the University of Queensland students, teams of five students assessed, diagnosed, and gave treatment plans to patients. Many agreed after the exercise was over that this is why they want to enter the healthcare field. All of the students felt a sense of accomplishment and pride that their hard work paid off to save a patient, but were also humbled by the opportunity to influence someone's life for the better. Neurosurgery By: Anna Mermilliod Thursday morning, the STAR students began the day bright and early with a presentation from Neurosurgeon Dr. Erin Biro. Dr. Biro started with an overview of the field of neurosurgery and taught the students the basic anatomy of the central nervous system. Next, she explained the subspecialties within neurosurgery including pediatric neurosurgery, trauma neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, functional neurosurgery, and vascular neurosurgery. While explaining each specialty, Dr. Biro presented the students with real-life examples and imaging, allowing the students to be interactive in diagnosing each patient. Dr. Biro also explained brain aneurysms and hemorrhaging, as well as shunts in the brain. Overall, her presentation was extremely informative and interesting for the STAR students!

UQ Skills Training By: Pravina Pidikiti Week 4, July 11 to July 15 On Thursday, July 14th, the STAR students spent their afternoon going through a skills training rotation with University of Queensland Medical School students. Throughout the rotation, students from University of Queensland Medical School taught the STAR students how to intubate, suture, use an IV, and how to check a patient s blood pressure. This rotation allowed the STAR students to learn about certain tools and techniques used in the medical field to treat patients. Rock n bowl By: Anna Mermilliod The STAR Alumni Party was held Thursday, July 14 at Rock-N-Bowl. All STAR classes, as well as STAR faculty, were invited for an evening of food, drinks, and bowling with friends. Previous STAR classes used the night as a time to reconnect with old friends, while the current STAR students enjoyed the time together as their final days of the program begin. The whole crowd was delighted at a surprise Bollywood dance performance by none other than Nikhil Gogineni and Pravina Pidikiti, members of STAR class of 2016. The night was certainly a hit, and all who attended had a wonderful time with friends.
