Pine Haven CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES September 2014 Volume 30, Issue 2 The Whispering Pine Pine Haven Expansion Shows Visible Progress! Inside this issue: Expansion Project News Resident News Calendar of Events 1 2-3 4 Staff News 4 From the CEO 5 Just For Fun 6 Progress is visible at the expansion construction site on the north side of Sheboygan Falls. Construction projects by nature are dependent upon good weather. Continuous spring rains made progress difficult at times, but the fairly dry and cool summer has allowed us to make up some lost time, and we are on track to move into the new skilled nursing facility in June 2015. Site grading, footings, and foundations are completed for the entire 95,000 square foot building. As these footings were placed, crews followed with installation of the underground piping for electrical and plumbing needs. The large multi-purpose room and one third of the skilled nursing home building have walls and roof completed. Plumbing, heating, and electrical contractors have begun the process of installing mechanical systems in these areas. The 2nd third of the nursing home has walls already completed, with roof soon to follow. And the final third has floor slabs in place with walls going up soon. The construction site is a beehive of activity. A variety of construction trades are all working together, each completing their work in one section before moving on to the next, so that the entire project can be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible. The building is planned so that the outside construction will be complete and the entire building will be enclosed by the end of December. Interior work will then continue through the winter months. A member of the Pine Haven community recently commented how wonderful it has been to see God blessing our community with this expansion project. We couldn t agree more! Prairie Crossing residents regularly gather to watch as construction unfolds Walls, windows, & roof in place on community room

September 2014 RESIDENT NEWS New Technology Better Resident Care On July 1st, Pine Haven began the transition to Electronic Medical Records (EMR) to help provide improved care for all residents. Daily charting of resident information using EMR will be much more efficient. Staff will be able to enter data almost immediately into the resident s chart, and have it recorded permanently into their medical record without need for retyping after rounds are completed. Additional benefits include reduced paper use, minimized duplication of work, the ability to access charts from anywhere, and improved sharing of medical information with appropriate healthcare professionals and hospitals. The EMR also links to the business office and accounting, for timely and accurate tracking and improved billing for all residents. Data collected will be referenced as we make long term strategic decisions for Pine Haven as a whole. The transition began in the nursing home, and is scheduled to roll out in phases throughout all Pine Haven communities. New EMR system enables better resident care New Tech Better Dining Our Dining Services team prides themselves on providing residents with good food that they enjoy. To help assist with this task, we have purchased new, advanced equipment that will allow our staff to provide fresher and healthier food, with an increased variety of options. This new equipment includes a combi-oven and blast chiller. The combi-oven allows complete control over the time, temperature, and moisture levels while cooking - providing greater control for better results. The blast chiller allows the dining services team to prepare menu items in advance, so that we can increase the number of homemade options at each meal. The new equipment has already proved to be a good decision. It has already started to be used in meal preparation - and we started getting compliments on the food right away. 2 Combi-oven at Pine Haven Residential Center

Volume 30 Issue 1 Martina Wessels, Resident Wellness Manager Welcome Martina Wessels, Our New Resident Wellness Manager Regular exercise helps maintain mobility, and can also help improve recovery after illness or a fall. Yet while we all know the benefit of exercise, we all still dread doing it. To help ensure Pine Haven residents get the support they need to remain active and healthy, we have hired a new Resident Wellness Manager, Martina Wessels. Martina brings a wealth of experience to Pine Haven. She earned her bachelor s degree in exercise science from Trinity Christian College. Since graduating, Martina worked for Alliance Rehab, providing fitness services to residents in independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, and dementia care environments. She has created exercise programs, coordinated activities within a resident fitness center, planned and coordinated games and fitness activities, created displays on health topics, and presented seminars on fitness and wellness topics. Please help us give Martina a warm welcome! Welcome Crystal Thomas, Our New Chef To further enhance our dining service, Pine Haven has added a chef to our staff, Crystal Thomas. Crystal brings a level of education and experience that will move meal preparation to a whole new level. She has a degree in culinary arts, baking and pastry arts & science from Johns and Wales University. She also has a certificate in education and supervised culinary interns. Crystal has over 18 years experience as a chef in various setting including restaurants, resorts and country clubs. Locally, she has worked at The Osthoff Resort, Lake Street Café, and The Gear Box. Crystal spent 10 years in the U.K. working at a resort during their transition to the same new food prep system we have just begun to use. This experience will be invaluable as we improve your dining services. Crystal and her family live in Plymouth. Please help us give her a warm welcome! Volume 30 Issue 1 From The CEO s Desk Interesting questions are asked as we discuss the many changes that have been or will be taking place within Pine Haven Christian Communities. The most important question I have been asked this year came from a daughter of one of our residents. She asked, What is Pine Haven committed to? The answer came after a reflective pause. I said, It is not WHAT we are committed to, but WHO we are committed to that drives us daily. Despite the long list of critical work completed in 2014 our new campus development; our busy, quality staff; our long list of activities; our new technology enhancements; and the special dietary department improvements what really challenges us is our acknowledgment that we are here to serve our God, who has been faithful to us for generations. God, our Father, demonstrated His love and commitment to us through the gift of His only Son and by sending us His Spirit as our Great Encourager. Our faithful God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is the cornerstone pyramid of Pine Haven s logo and message to our communities. This is our very first commitment. Commitment is such a motivating word. It puts our mission and vision into the forefront of our daily responsibilities. Psalm 37: 5 puts it this way Commit your way to the Lord, Trust in Him. Our commitment has led us to conclusions resulting in three absolutes, resulting in peaceful trust: 1. We need to experience the life changing love of Jesus as our personal Savior. 2. We need to trust the leading of His Spirit, and be the encourager He would have us be. 3. We need to insure that the values Jesus taught are experienced daily in our different campus communities. Roger Leys, CEO Committed to this, we then look into the eyes of our residents and other team members as Jesus would, with love, compassion and respect. Encouraging relationships develop, and a soul print makes its mark on searching/ seeking lives. This is the working of the Spirit. There is no greater responsibility than to show others the love of Christ and remind those around us that our God loves us and is faithful. If you are involved with Pine Haven, you have witnessed the power of our faithful God. The working of His Spirit is a powerful thing. We invite you to join us at the mission you, your families or your churches helped to start. We are changing physically. We always will make strengthening our purpose and resolve a most important daily task. This is our prayerful commitment in response to His love for us. We are so humbly thankful for your support and commitment. -Roger Leys, CEO Last Issue s Solution: Books of the Bible Crossword Across: 1 Bible, 4 Obadiah, 7 One, 8 Old, 9 James, 11 Judges, 12 Jude, 13 Esther, 14 Psalms, 17 Ezra, 18 Author, 21 Three, 23 Ten, 24 Sea, 26 Letters, 27 Micah Down: 1 Books, 2 Lo, 3 End, 5 Alms, 6 Hebrews, 9 Joel, 10 Ruth, 13 Ezekiel, 15 Amos, 16 Luke, 19 Jonah, 20 Tree, 22 Hem, 25 Ai 5
