BlueNotes Over-the-counter medications Over-the-counter (OTC) and herbal medicines are medicines you can buy without a prescription from your doctor. These medicines may help you feel better by treating or preventing health problems, such as allergies, constipation, cough and cold, and heartburn. While you don t need a prescription from your doctor to get these medicines, it is very important to let your doctor and pharmacist know of all OTC or herbal medicines you are currently taking to make sure you receive the best care possible. These medicines can cause side effects when taken with the medicines your doctor prescribes. Do not lose health benefits for you and your family! New moms: If you recently had a baby, make sure he or she has no break in health coverage by signing your baby up for health coverage as soon as possible. Call Horizon NJ Health Member Services for help at 1-800-682-9090 (TTY/TDD 711). You should also call your local County Welfare Agency (CWA) to let them know you ve had a baby. Sometimes, OTC and herbal medicines can also cause other prescription medicines to act differently than intended. If you see more than one doctor or fill prescriptions at more than one pharmacy, it s also important to let everyone involved in your care know of all the medicines you are taking, including OTC and herbal medicines. Finally, it is important to take all medicines, the ones you receive over the counter and also those prescribed by your doctor, exactly as the label says to make sure all medicines are working the best way they can to help you with your condition. Quality Improvement Program For more information about Horizon NJ Health s Quality Improvement Program and its progress toward goals, please call Member Services toll free at 1-800-682-9090 (TTY/TDD 711) and ask for the Quality Department, or go to horizonnjhealth.com/qualityimprovement. Annual health exams are as important as your teen s school exams The best way for your teen to stay healthy is to have an annual well-care visit. Your child s Primary Care Provider (PCP) will make sure your child has all the right health screenings for his or her age group. Routine well-care visits prevent problems before they happen. A well-child exam includes: A physical exam A review of your own medical and family health history Making sure your child is up-to-date on his or her vaccinations Checking mental development Checking physical growth and development Age-appropriate health education and recommendations If your child plays school sports, more than likely he or she will have to get a sports physical. It is important to remember that a sports physical is not the same as a well-care visit. All sports physicals should be completed by your child s PCP. An easy way to complete both requirements is scheduling your child s well-care visit and bringing any sports physical information with you so your child s doctor can complete both at the same time. If you do complete a sports physical by someone other than your child s PCP, you will still need to schedule a well-care visit for the year. You should always try to make sure your child s PCP is aware of any care that might have taken place outside of his or her office. Lower Your Risk of Falling Exercise, as directed by your doctor. Increased physical activity can improve strength, balance and endurance to help prevent falls. Get enough sleep and avoid alcohol. Get out of chairs and bed slowly. Have regular eye and ear tests. If you wear eyeglasses or a hearing aid, use them correctly and make sure that your prescription is up to date. Keep floors clear of clutter. Keep your home well-lit. Let your doctor know if your medicine makes you dizzy. If you fall and get hurt, get help right away. If you do not think you were hurt, tell your doctor about the fall at your next appointment anyway. 2

Coverage of insect repellents that may prevent Zika virus To protect yourself from getting Zika virus, you should use an Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellent. Now, certain repellants are covered by your plan. You will need to ask your health care provider for a prescription and bring it to your local pharmacy. The repellents listed in this chart are included in this coverage. Talk to your doctor to see which insect repellent is best for you and your family. Insect repellents should not be used on babies younger than 2 months old. Although Zika virus is mostly found in parts of Central America, South America and the Caribbean, it is important to protect yourself, even when you are not traveling to one of these areas. Mosquitoes in the United States can become infected if they bite a person who has Zika virus. Once they are infected, mosquitoes with Zika virus can infect other people. For the most current information about Zika virus, visit cdc.gov. Preparing for your hospital stay If you are planning to be in the hospital for a medical procedure, or if you will be there to visit a loved one, there are things you can do to stay informed, safe and aware. Medication safety Bring all your current prescription and OTC medicines with you. Tell your health care team if you are allergic to any medicines. Tell your health care team if you have any side effects from any medicines they give you during your stay. What parents can do to keep children safe in a hospital Follow all safety signs and messages like washing your hands or keeping doors closed. If your child is prescribed sleeping medicines, ask the health care team to give your child the medicines at the hospital during his or her stay before you take your child home, so they can see if there are any bad reactions. Tell the health care team about any concerns you have about your child s procedure. Preventing falls Tell your health care team if any medicine is making you dizzy. Use the call button for help getting out of bed or going to the restroom. Wear non-slip socks or shoes. Helping a loved one in the hospital Introduce yourself to the health care team so you can get updated information about your loved one s condition. Take notes for your family member. Skin cancer prevention and sun safety Skin cancer is very common, with about 5 million people getting treatment for it in the United States each year. Most skin cancers can be prevented, and there are easy ways to protect yourself when you spend time in the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) ray damage builds up over time, so protection should start at an early age. The sun s rays are stronger in the summer months, so be sure to take extra care during this time: Do not use indoor tanning beds. Limit your time in the sun especially during the midday hours. Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, even if it s cloudy out. Be sure to reapply at least every two hours or after swimming. Stay in the shade. Wear sunglasses with UV protection, a wide-brim hat, and clothes made from a tightly woven fabric. If this type of fabric is not available, wear a cover-up, long sleeve shirt or long pants. Source: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Check the expiration date on your sunscreen. Sunscreen without an expiration date is good to use for about three years, but its shelf life is shorter when it s exposed to high temperatures. 5
