2 8 History Of The Program 1978-79 MAIAW CHAMPIONS FIRST ROW: Sheri Johansen, Holly Wagner, Sharon Witthoft, Lisa Jacques, Marlys Welker, Cathy Minor & Kathy Minor. BACK ROW: Gina Faulstich, Walt Leslie, Angie Griffin, Tracy Rowan, Deb Thrasher, Carol Jarrard, Laurie Nevins, Jeanne Uhlmeyer, Denise Stone & Coach Mary Jo Murray. Though basketball was not played as an intercollegiate sport for women at Truman until 1972-73, its history and tradition can be traced back to the mid 1960 s. In 1972-73, the University s athletics department under went a change as women s athletics teams appeared on the department s budget for the first time. Until the 72-73 season, women s teams competed as extramural (club) teams, funding their own program through the players and sponsors. The early teams met with great success, capturing the Missouri State Sports Day Championship three years straight. The state tournament began in 1967 with teams qualifying by placing first or second in regional tournaments. On the way to its third title in 1969, Truman defeated Central Missouri 54-27 in the semifinal game and downed the University of Missouri (Columbia) 49-41 in the championship tilt. The first collegiate coach for the Bulldogs (then known as the Bulldogettes) was Kathy Austin who compiled a 12-11 career coaching record in two seasons at the helm. The first collegiate campaign met with success, ending with a 9-6 mark and a fourthplace finish in the Missouri Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women s (MAIAW) state tournament. Austin s 3-5 record in 1973-74 included a season sweep of rival Quincy (Ill.) and a victory over Missouri (Columbia). Pam Wood became the second Bulldog head coach and had a two-year record of 13-14. Wood s 1974-75 team flip-flopped between wins and losses throughout the season with the exception of back-toback wins against Missouri (Columbia) and Missouri Western. In the end, Truman was on the positive end of the see-saw with an 8-6 record and a sixthplace finish at the MAIAW state tournament. Wood s final season ended with a 5-8 mark in 1975-76, the last losing campaign for six years. Next on the scene was Mary Jo Murray who won more games than any Truman women s basketball coach to date with 1 over a seven-year span. Murray s first season ended with an 11-10 mark which improved to 14-11 and a fifth-place finish at the MAIAW state tournament in 77-78. Murray s 1977-78 squad would include two freshmen guards, the 5-8 Sharon Witthoft and the 5-10 Angie Griffin. Both players went on to become the first two Bulldogs to break the 1,0-point plateau. The following season a 6-1 freshman forward named Carol Jarrard began a historic career under the third-year coach. The 1978-79 squad posted the The AIAW, NCAA, MAIAW & MIAA The Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) was the member organization for women s programs before the NCAA began sponsoring women s athletics in 1981-82. National championships were held under the AIAW for large colleges from 1972 until 1982. Since that time, the NCAA has crowned the national champion. In 1982, the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association conference began sponsoring women s championships. The Missouri Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) was established in 1971. It was an official structure of Region VI of the AIAW. The MAIAW was divided into three divisions: Division I for large colleges, Division II for small colleges and Division III for junior colleges. In basketball, Truman competed in the Division II North conference against Missouri Western and Rockhurst. The Southwest conference included Southwest Missouri, Missouri Southern, Missouri-Rolla and Southwest Baptist. The Southeast conference included Missouri-St. Louis, Lincoln, Southeast and William Woods. The top two teams of the three Missouri conferences, plus two at-large teams, advanced to the eight-team state tournament. The winner of the state tournament advanced to regional play. MAIAW CHAMPIONS (SMALL COLLEGES) 1974-75 Tarkio 1977-78 Missouri Western 1980-81 Southwest Missouri 1975-76 Tarkio 1978-79 Truman 1981-82 Truman 1976-77 Tarkio 1979-80 William Woods best record of any Truman women s basketball team at 20-9, a feat which stood for 20 years until the 1998-99 squad went 22-9. The 78-79 team took the MAIAW state title and finished third at the AIAW regional tournament. The 1979-80 team almost repeated the previous season s outcome, but finished second at the MAIAW state tournament with a 16-10 mark. Ending the season with a record of 15-14, the 1980-81 edition also ended up second at the state tourney. Murray s coaching legacy at Truman was capped by her 1981-82 team s success in compiling a 17-10 record, a first-place finish in the final MAIAW state tournament and advancing to the NCAA Division II South Central Regional and AIAW Region 6 Tournaments. The Dogs lost close games in both, but Murray s and the team s place was set in school history. That season would be Jarrard s final as she ended her collegiate outing as the school s all-time leading scorer with 2,6 points. She is one of only two Bulldogs to have scored 1,0-plus points and collect 1,0-plus rebounds (1,084), and was Truman s first all-america in women s basketball. Murray s final season, and the Bulldog s first conference season, was lack luster, finishing with a 9-16 overall mark and in fifth-place in the MIAA. In her seven seasons at the helm, Murray compiled a 1-80 record. Tarry Parrish followed Murray, tallying a 44-115 mark in six years. Her best season was in 1986-87 when the Bulldogs went 12-13. Lois Heeren, who played for Mary Jo Murray in the early 80 s, returned to coach the team for three seasons from 1989-92. She inherited a center named Felicia Sutton and guards Angie Gum and Susan Theroff. All three tabulated more than a 1,0 points for their careers. Sutton also finished by becoming the all-time leading rebounder with 1,235. Heeren s first squad finished with a 12-13 mark. The following season (1990-91), Truman posted a 16-11 record and was fourth in the MIAA. Jan Conner assumed the head coaching role for the next three seasons, meeting with little success with a 19-58 mark. Conner s teams never made a postseason tournament, finishing tied for eighth in the conference in 1994-95. A new face entered the program in 1995-96. Karin Nicholls began a rebuilding process that returned the Bulldogs to the MIAA postseason tournament in 1997-98. En route to the team s first league postseason berth since 1990-91, the Bulldogs posted a 10-3 home mark. Nicholls' 1998-99 team would advance further than any other in school history and post the best record ever at 22-9. That team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament, losing to Emporia State in the South Central region finals. Another outstanding player s career also came to an end that year. Guard Amy Eagan finished her career as the Bulldog s third all-time scorer (1,527 points) on her way to earning all-america status. John Sloop assumed the reigns in 20-01 following the departure of Nicholls to the DI ranks.

Postseason History 2 9 1981-82 MAIAW CHAMPIONS A fourth-place finish in the 1972-73 Missouri Association of Intercollegiate Collegiate Athletics for Women tournament was the beginning of Truman s postseason history. Two years later, the Bulldogs placed fifth at the MAIAW state tournament, and would repeat their fifth-place finish in 1977-78. However, that season also began a five-year string of state tournament appearances for the Bulldogs. In 1978-79, Truman won the MAIAW state tournament and advanced to the Association of Intercollegiate Collegiate Athletics for Women s tournament, finishing third in Region 6. Truman placed second at the state tournament the next two seasons before winning the final MAIAW tournament to culminate the 1981-82 campaign. In fact, the Bulldogs played two postseason games that year, the first as part of the newly recognized NCAA women s basketball championship and the other as part of the AIAW national tournament. Truman played host to Chapman (Calif.) in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional, losing 49-46 after a late surge by Chapman. The Bulldogs then travelled to Fargo, N.D. as the fifth seed in the AIAW Region 6 tournament, dropping that game 68-60 to the Northern Iowa. In 1982-83 women s basketball became a conference sport as the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association began its sponsorship of women s championships. However, Truman did not make its first MIAA postseason tournament until the 1987-88 season. Many of the same players would lead the Bulldogs to the conference postseason tourney in 1990-91. Head coach Karin Nicholls ended the Bulldogs postseason drought in 1997-98, but it would be her 1998-99 team that registered Truman s first MIAA tournament victory. The Dogs travelled to Pittsburg for a first-round encounter and downed the Gorillas 71-64, before being eliminated by league champion Emporia State. Truman hosted its first MIAA postseason tournament game in the first-round in 1999-, but fell to Southwest Baptist, 71-62. The 6-1 center was named to the 1981-82 AIAW Division II all-america first-team after leading the Bulldogs to an MAIAW State Championship and to a berth in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional and AIAW Region 6 Tournament. Enfield was the first Truman woman to earn first- team all-america accolades. She was also the first Bulldog to be selected three times to the AIAW all-region 6 team. She concluded her career with 2,6 points, a Bulldog career record, and 1,084 rebounds in 112 games. Enfield was 11th in the final 1981-82 NCAA Division II scoring statistics with a 19.8 average and was 14th in free-throw percentage with a.780 figure.
