Oo GOSPEL MEDITATION 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time oo0 0000 oooo o "I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?" The parable Jesus tells today is the story of a king, but in truth it is about Jesus himself. He is the "king" who has forgiven our debts. We are the "servants" whose sins have earned us chastisement. But when we repent and ask for Christ's mercy, he grants it to us without hesitation. The point of the parable, then, is that we too should extend this mercy to others. We should not be like that "wicked servant" who begged for mercy but would not show it to others. Elsewhere, Jesus teaches us to pray, "Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors" (Mt. 6:12). We use different words, but a similar meaning when we pray the Our Father asking God to "forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." But are we sure that we mean what we say???????????????????? It's important to pause and evaluate how we are doing in this regard. Are we harboring any grudges? Are there people we refuse to forgive? Is there a situation where we are seeking revenge instead of extending mercy? Jesus asks us to do otherwise. He reminds us that we have already been forgiven. We are right now enjoying the benefits of his forgiveness. So we are called to bear in mind our own sins, failings, weaknesses, and "debts" when we deal with others instead of thinking that we are perfectly innocent and acting as if we've never been the beneficiary of mercy. So let us do our best to forgive as we have been forgiven. This doesn't mean approving of wrong behavior; God doesn't ask us to do that. But he does ask us to let go of bitterness and foster mercy instead. At Home with the Lord Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom those who have died and gone before us marked in the sign of faith, especially Julia Pavlik Stephen Brady Elma Akerly Please pray for the consolation of their loved ones. Marriage Congratulations Congratulations to the following couple who were married this past week: Amy Bartolowits & Michael Smith St. Anthony Chapel The Chapel is in need of Attendants (sitters). If you would consider volunteering to sit in the Chapel for 1 hour per week, please call Carole at 412-999-4401. Being present in the Chapel is a spiritual and uplifting experience to be treasured. Please consider volunteering for the Chapel. - May St. Anthony Bless and Protect you Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of the Relic of St. Therese of Lisieux at St. Anthony's Chapel On Sunday, October 1st at 3:00 pm, we will begin to pray the Church's evening prayer before Christ in the Eucharist. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the monstrance at the beginning of evening prayer and the service will conclude with Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service, the faithful who wish to do so will have the opportunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For October, it will be the relic of St. Therese of Lisieux, whose feast day is on October 1st. Do Unto Others Even when we strive to be close with God we can wonder if he s really listening to us or if he really cares for us with an unquenchable love. This is especially true in moments of trial or challenge. Yet, we know that when we focus our eyes and ears and hearts on the things of God we can see his love at work for us in all things. In his letter to the Romans, Saint Paul reminds us that the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable, that nothing can separate us from his love. ALOYSIUS VOLUNTEER LUNCHEON Mark your calendars for the St. Aloysius Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. It will be held on Sunday, November 5th at 1:00 at Remo s on Babcock Blvd. LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Relationships are the focus of our reflection again this week, calling us to practice forgiveness unconditionally. This is a difficult thing for us to do. Forgiving someone does not mean that we necessarily tolerate or condone their behavior. Rather, it has to do with letting go of the anger and the hurt that really is more self-destructive than productive. We are called to recognize the brokenness and sinfulness of each other. We may, at times, have to walk away from an abusive or destructive relationship. However, keeping in mind the lessons it taught, we can free ourselves from its hurtful grasp by learning how to forgive as God forgives. It's a tall order.

Twenty Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 16 & 17, 2017 A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar -Unable to forgive another, means we are holding onto a past wrong and hoping for a better past. That is not going to happen. We must move on with our life by accepting we were unjustly treated and it will not be corrected. We aren t condoning the injustice. We just don t let it control our lives any longer. Forgiveness is critical to living a healthy life in the present. St. Vincent de Paul Society - The challenge in today s Gospel, is to forget how others have behaved toward us and to look to God s way of loving and forgiving. Our focus must be on God. Is there a neighbor or friend who is in temporary need because of a loss of a job or an illness? Please leave a message for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul we want to help! A Rachel s Vineyard weekend retreat for postabortion healing will be held on Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2017 at Tabor House in Millvale.
