Bullying Prevention Summit Draws a Dedicated Audience The Bully-Free Florida Network held a very successful Bullying Prevention Summit at UCF on Saturday, February 27. It was attended by over 90 students and teachers from area middle schools, high schools, and colleges. The goal for the summit was to help schools create anti-bullying clubs and strengthen existing clubs and programs. To do this a successful club from Hagerty High School was invited to help train the prospective clubs. Additionally, number of other individuals and organizations conducted informative workshops including our own Dr. Judy Levin. professionals, and practitioners together to build a bully-free Florida. Please contact Dr. Phil Koger if you have an interest in this issue and would like to work with us. How the Education Universe Is Expanding David N. Perkins, Carl H. Pforzheimer Jr. Research Professor from Harvard University recently wrote an article in the Educational Leadership journal entitled, Lifeworthy learning. This article included six Beyonds that illustrate how the education universe is expanding. Beyond content to 21st century skills and competencies. A contemporary education is not just about the facts or even the conceptual understanding of content. It is also about critical and creative thinking, collaboration, communication, citizenship and even more. Beyond local to global perspectives, problems, and studies. It s not just one s own nation and neighboring nations. In today s world, the culture, economics, and politics of any nation might come to influence any other, and world-scale problems like global warming touch us all. Beyond topics to content as material for thinking and action. Knowledge offers a lens through which to understand past and contemporary events so that we can engage the world with more insight and impact. Beyond the traditional disciplines to renewed and extended versions of the disciplines. Current themes (ecological diversity, energy supplies, the complex character of democracy in various nations, and so on) are often in the foreground. Beyond discrete disciplines to interdisciplinary topics and problems. It s been said that every world-scale problem has an interdisciplinary character. Beyond academic engagement to personal choice, significance, commitment and passion. In many settings, students have opportunities to pursue themes that resonate deeply for them. Perkins, D.N. Lifeworthy learning. Educational Leadership, Vol. 23, No. 6, pp. 12-17. Coe and Hood Publish Article in NCTE Journal Dr. Yolanda Hood and Dr. Vicky Zygouris-Coe recently published a co-authored an article in Voices in the Middle, the flagship journal for middle grades of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The article encourages the use of the mystery and suspense genre in YA literature as a tool for fostering authentic inquiry and investigation in grades 6 through 8. The article, titled Fostering Authentic Inquiry and Investigation through Middle Grade Mystery and Suspense Novels can be found online. 2

UCF Science Education Reaches a National Goal The Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC) is pleased to announce the newest inductees into The 5+ Club, a group of institutions that has graduated five or more highly qualified physics teachers in the last academic year. The great majority of institutions graduate less than two physics teachers a year, and the most common number of graduates is zero. In their 2014 report, the American Association for Employment in Education found that the teacher shortage in physics is number one among 59 education fields. The 5+ Club institutions are national leaders in addressing the severe nationwide shortage of secondary physics teachers. This year PhysTEC is proud to recognize the following: Brigham Young University (17) Illinois State University (10) Stony Brook University (8) Arizona State University (6) Boston University (6) University of Central Florida (6) Middle Tennessee State University (5) Rowan University (5) Towson University (5) University of Arkansas (5) West Chester University (5) Western Michigan University (5) Promethean Training Comes to the MIRC A training for the Promethean Interactive Whiteboard Systems is being offered on Friday, April 15, 2016 from 9:00am 3:30pm in the MIRC Gallery.
