COURSE DESCRIPTION This education program has been designed to equip participants with current safe diabetes management practices in the school setting and expand skill sets utilizing new diabetes technologies. All speakers will address relevant issues and provide valuable information and insight into situations commonly presented both clinically and in practice during the academic school year. TARGET AUDIENCE This course is designed for school personnel/administrators, nurses, parents of children with diabetes, social workers, and other healthcare professionals interested in updating their knowledge on safe care practices and treatment of children with diabetes. OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, the participant should be able to: Identify all components of the school diabetes medical management plan. Describe the differences between a 504 Plan and a School Care Plan. Identify foods containing carbohydrates. Apply carbohydrate counting skills for meal planning and appropriate medication dosing. Recognize the importance of care collaboration between students, nurses, food service staff and managers. Describe basic components of CGM and insulin pump therapy. Recognize when and how to troubleshoot the insulin pump in relation to hyper/hypoglycemia. Determine appropriate use of glucagon in the school setting. Demonstrate skill in insulin administration using different insulin delivery devices. Describe the process for proper ketone management in various settings. Identify at least 2 local community resources for diabetes self-management support. Describe expected milestones in diabetes care related to age and maturity. Distinguish the difference between depression and the blues. Describe the relationship between gum disease and diabetes. Identify at least 2 benefits for being physically active.
