It welcomes people, helps them to settle in and to understand the culture and values of the organisation. 1.2 It sets standards and ensures that new staff have clear terms of reference on which to build their knowledge and motivation to carry out their roles as quickly and effectively as possible, thereby contributing to the quality of patient care. It also provides health and safety reassurances for the organisation 1

2 Medical Staff in Training 2.1 Medical staff in training grades rotate into posts within Northumberland Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (the Trust/NTW) on different dates depending upon grade. On their first placement in the Trust they will receive an induction into the Trust that will include the core elements of the Corporate Induction programme, not already provided via the Lead Employing Trust (LET) or Deanery. 2.1.1 The processes differ depending on the location in which the doctor is to be based and the stage of the Doctor in Training. A process flow chart (Appendix 1) details the induction programme for the different states of Doctors in Training and locations in which they will be based. 2.2 Year 1 3 Trainees 2.2.1 All trainees will have an induction with the Lead Employing Trust; this will be provided by E learning and will cover: Welcome to the North East Roles of the Junior Doctor Your employer Calculating Drug Doses for Adults Child Protection Level 2 Complaints Fire Safety Fraud in the NHS Hand Hygiene Health and Safety Infection Control Medication History Mental Capacity Act MRSA Risk Management Safeguarding Adults 2.3 For trainees South of the Tyne they will undertake a 3 day Induction Programme (Appendix 2) and will be issued with a handbook covering key areas (Appendix 3) and a welcome pack covering (Appendix 4) information vital for new starters. 2.3.1 Additional training is also booked/scheduled for all inductees in Trust required topics as detailed in flow chart (Appendix 1). 2

2.4 For trainees North of the Tyne they will receive a site induction, sample attached (Appendix 5) and a Trust Induction (Appendix 6). 2.4.1 Trainees will then have 10 days to complete the Induction E learning programme covering: Care Coordination Risk Assessment Safe Prescribing Seclusion Mental Health Act Rapid Tranquillisation Learning Disabilities and will be booked/scheduled to attend the additional required training as detailed on the process flow chart (Appendix 1). 2.4.2 Trainees will be provided with a handbook covering essential information (Appendix 7) as well as a DVD covering required knowledge and on call arrangements. 2.5 Both sets of Trainees will have a local Induction with the consultant in their area, as well as a meeting within the first week with their Education Supervisor who will produce an individual Learning Plan. 2.6 Year 4 6 Trainees 2.6.1 Will have an Induction provided by the School of Psychiatry via the Deanery to GMC standards. This will be followed by site and Trust Induction as per North of Tyne process and the issue of North of Tyne handbook and on call DVD. 2.6.2 Additional training will be scheduled to cover Clinical Supervision and Learning Disability Awareness as well as completing the Learning Disability E learning module. 2.6.3 They will then receive a local induction from the consultant for their area. 2.7 F2 s 2.7.1 Follow the same process as for year 1 3 trainees North of Tyne to include LET Induction as well as Trust provided induction. 2.7.2 Where F2 s rotate outside usual induction periods the induction is provided on a DVD. 2.7.3 F2 s will also get a local induction with the consultant in their area. 3

3 Monitoring Records of Induction compliance for all Medical Staff in Training to include completion of E modules, attendance/non-attendance on programmes etc is held by the Post Graduate Medical Education Department and the Deanery on the Intrepid system. Bi annual confirmation provided by the Medical Education Department of all medical staff in training compliance with induction arrangements. 4
