SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY Essays are a common requirement when applying for scholarships. The scholarship essay is your means of communicating your story, dreams and goals to the selection committee and allows the committee to get to know you and see your potential. The quality of your essay will be a determining factor for earning a scholarship award. Essays should be 1-2 double-spaced pages using 1" margins and 12-point font and should include the following: Introduction Kent Flash My name is Kent Flash and I am a senior at Geneva High School. I was born with an entrepreneurial spirit. As a young child, I had a lemonade stand and as a teenager I started my own lawncare service, managing the finances and developing the marketing strategies myself. My parents are small business owners and have encouraged me to pursue my dream of one day taking over my family s business. A college education is the foundation for a successful career and I have chosen to attend Kent State University at Ashtabula to pursue a bachelor s degree in business management. I Be sure to include your full name. List your educational and career goals and aspirations. Your name at the top of the page know that I will gain the knowledge and skills I will need to help grow my family s business. Your educational and career goals Activities and achievements in your community, at work, or in school (leadership, community service, student organizations, etc.) How a scholarship would help you meet your educational and career goals Any other information you would like the scholarship committee to consider such as obstacles you have overcome, qualities or skills that distinguish you from others, etc. Here, and on the following page, you will find essay samples and helpful writing tips. Detail your activities and achievements in your community, at work or in school. Conclusion and any additional information. One of my proudest achievements is my first degree black belt in karate. I have been active in karate since I was six years old and this experience has brought me both physical and mental strength that I carry with me in all aspects of my life. I serve as a volunteer at my dojo, helping my karate instructor with his children s karate classes and serving as a mentor to those children. At school, I am president of the student council and play first base for our varsity baseball team. When I am not working on schoolwork or involved in my extracurricular activities, I help out at my parent s business. As small business owners, my parents are worried about the current economy and how it impacts their business. A scholarship will help me make my career goals a reality without putting added stress on my parents finances. My goal is to graduate with my bachelor s degree with as little debt as possible so that I am able to invest as much as possible into growing our family business. I have learned many valuable lessons through my experiences, especially that hard work does pay off. I know that my strong work ethic paired with a business degree from KSUA and the financial support of a scholarship will allow me to realize my goals and help to make a difference in my community. Thank you for your consideration. How will a scholarship help you achieve your educational and career goals? SCHOLARSHIP GUIDE 7

Essay- Writing Tips In addition to minimum requirement criteria such as GPA and enrolled credit hours, essays are heavily weighted in determining the award of any available scholarship. Finally, I decided that I would do whatever it takes to make my goal of being a nurse a reality. With my family s support I have been able to quit my job and attend school full time, but this has put a significant strain on our budget. A scholarship would help to minimize the amount of debt I incur and allow me to focus on school rather than worrying about Create an essay that is well thought-out. Receiving a scholarship would give me the encouragement and confidence I need to achieve my goals, make my family proud, and give me the opportunity to dedicate my career to my mother and the nurses who played such a significant role during a difficult time in our lives. I am committed to working hard in school and would appreciate any opportunity that can help me on my journey. ASKING FOR RECOMMENDATIONS Recommendations play an important role in determining how others view you. It is your responsibility to select the most appropriate individuals who will support and advocate for you. It is suggested that you select individuals you interact with often and who are familiar with your talents, successes and abilities. When approaching someone for a recommendation, always be respectful of their time and schedules. Be outgoing. Ask your teachers, counselors, coaches and community leaders. If they are familiar with you, they will be glad to assist you if given enough time. Provide them with the recommendation form filled out with your information. Also, supply them with details of awards, volunteering, outside community activities or pertinent information that they may not know, to provide a well-rounded perspective. Make sure they have plenty of time to formulate their thoughts and return the form. About two weeks before you want to submit your application should be sufficient. Follow up within a week prior to the deadline you established with them to see if they need additional information. What is an education worth? With a high school diploma $34,632 According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an education is worth plenty. Full-time workers age 25 and over without a high school diploma had median weekly earnings of $492, compared with $666 for high school graduates (no college) and $1,187 for those holding at least a bachelor s degree.
