Policy Standard Operating Procedure CLASSIFICATION # SOP UN 01.1-2002 Uniforms- Dress Code SUBJECT Uniforms - Revised AUTHORITY Fire Chief All Personnel shall wear issued uniforms in compliance with the procedures outlined below. Purpose To establish a standard dress code for all uniformed Personnel. Scope All uniformed Personnel. Procedure RULES See Appendix for uniform details. Only OFS approved crests, badges, pins or tags shall be worn as part on issued clothing. Medals listed in the Wearing of Orders, Decorations and Medals pamphlet may be worn with the Dress Uniform. Ribbons listed in the Wearing of Orders, Decorations and Medals pamphlet may be worn with the Standard Uniform. s and/or cargo pants shall not be worn as part of the Dress Uniform. Division Heads shall wear dress pants with the Standard Uniform. Only uniform items obtained through the point system shall be worn while on duty, unless otherwise specified. Acting Chief Officers shall wear a light blue shirt as part of their Standard Uniform. When a Member chooses to wear the military style sweater it shall be worn over their Standard Uniform shirt, T-shirt or mock turtle neck shirt and rank insignia shall be visible, where applicable. Chief Officers shall have a Dress Uniform available at all times while on duty. All Members shall have a neat and clean Standard Uniform available at all times. Issued clothing shall be kept clean, neat, and in good repair at all times. All items shall fit as intended. Work and Dress shoes shall be kept clean and polished. Issued clothing shall not be modified in any way. Issued shirts that have collars, shall be fully buttoned with the exception of the top button when a tie is not worn. Issue ball caps may be worn with the Standard Uniform and Training Wear only. The exceptions are Chief Officers and Fire Prevention Officers who shall wear their uniform caps with the Standard Uniform. Issue Date: March 18, 2002 Last Revision: July 22, 2003 Page 1 of 5

Standard Operating Procedure Personnel shall not wear out of date or faded clothing. The uniforms listed in the Appendix shall not be worn with civilian clothing while on duty. Proceeding to and from work Members shall: o Wear clothing that does not identify them as an Ottawa Fire Service Member or; o Wear the appropriate complete uniform. T Shirts: Must be in good condition. They must be tucked in at all times. Only the official issue is permissible. Only issue T Shirts may be worn under uniform shirts. Issue shorts may be worn only: o During practical training sessions providing safety is not compromised. o During Physical Fitness Training. Specialty Team Members shall wear their issued Specialty Clothing where applicable. ACTIONS 1.0 Urban Suppression Members Standard Uniform (See Appendix) 1.1 All Suppression Members shall wear the Standard Uniform at all times, with the following exceptions: Training Wear may be worn when directly involved in practical Training Sessions or between the hours of 22:00 hrs and 07:00 hrs. 2.0 Training Members Standard Uniform (See Appendix) 2.1 Training Officers shall wear the Standard Uniform at all times, with the following exceptions: Training Wear may be worn when directly involved in practical Training Sessions. 3.0 Fire Prevention Staff Standard Uniform (See Appendix) 3.1 Fire Prevention Officers shall wear the Standard Uniform at all times, with the following exceptions: Issue Date: March 18, 2002 Last Revision: July 22, 2003 Page 2 of 5

Standard Operating Procedure Training Wear may be worn when conducting on-scene fire investigations. 4.0 Communications Staff Standard Uniform (See Appendix) 4.1 All Communication Staff shall wear the Standard Uniform at all times, with the following exceptions: Training Wear may be worn between the hours of 22:00 hrs and 07:00 hrs. 5.0 Maintenance Staff Standard Uniform (See Appendix) 5.1 Maintenance Staff shall wear the Standard Uniform at all times, with the following exceptions: 6.0 Rural Personal (Reserved) Under Development RESPONSIBILITIES Supply/Acquisition Officer shall: Distribute uniforms and clothing issues. Resolve any problems with issue. Repair or replace lost or damaged clothing. Uniformed Personnel shall: Wear and maintain their uniforms as directed. Report any problems with issue to Supply/Acquisition Officer. Ensure items are not lost, stolen or ruined by neglect or carelessness. Complete a request for uniform issue each year. Submit a report of any lost or damaged clothing to Supply/Acquisition Officer. Issue Date: March 18, 2002 Last Revision: July 22, 2003 Page 3 of 5

Standard Operating Procedure Maintain, at least, the minimum amount of uniform clothing necessary to meet the standards set forth in this SOP. Supervisors of Uniformed Personnel shall: Monitor the uniform standards of their uniformed staff. Conditions may exist that require some type of deviation by the Incident Commander. Decisions should always be based on experience, the safety of the public and the safety of personnel.
