Our workshops have helped land management and quality of life professionals understand the connection between their work and public health. RED was created to fill the gaps between the academic realm, practitioners, and associations; our goal is to collaborate, not duplicate or compete. While we have been successful in our strategies, we cannot continue to do this work alone and insure that our efforts will continue to make a difference. Some of our significant accomplishments include: 30+ educational workshops worldwide on healthy community design, financial sustainability, active transportation, leadership development, and succession planning; Alpha and beta site testing for our Healthy Communities Surveillance and Management Toolkit, researching parks and recreation agencies as vital contributors to public health; Developing our Safe Routes to Play Initiative to provide more children with travel options and access to nature, two areas that greatly impact childhood obesity and activity levels; Developing and distributing our online newsletter, GP RED News You Can Use to more than 5,600 recipients; Conducting national surveys to help define trends in the field of parks, recreation, planning, active transportation, and public health. Our survey results are used by organizations seeking to improve policy and management strategies; Convening national leaders and change makers in two national Think Tanks to envision how we can work together to determine the best practices for advancing common goals such as building healthy communities. GP RED is launching its first Annual Appeal to expand on the investment of generous donors who founded GP RED and have continued lending financial support. We are comprised largely of volunteers (only two staff) who do this incredible work. However, as our programs have gained in popularity and effectiveness, we have realized the need to reach out to the broader community to build our capacity. Today, we are asking you to contribute to this important work. Our target goal is to raise a modest $30,000 in this campaign both to invest in community planning efforts and to extend our systematic research to more communities. Information about our initiatives, accomplishments, and financial statements is enclosed and available on our web site, gpred.org. It s easy to give. Click on this link to make your tax deductible donation on our secure website. Your gift will allow us to continue providing valuable research, education, and information to people like you who want to make our communities more livable, more accessible, and more vibrant for everyone. Measuring Our Impact 2012 Annual Report 211 North Public Road, Suite 225 Lafayette, CO 80026 (303) 439-8369 info@gpred.org gpred.org GP RED ANNUAL REPORT 2012

Dear Colleagues and Friends, The importance of policy change, citizen engagement, and the built environment in motivating the individual s choice for active living cannot be overstated. Designing communities with a focus on serving people of all ages, incomes, and abilities is paramount if our nation is to effectively reduce obesity. These goals have been a priority for GP RED over the past year. In 2012, GP RED supported the parks and recreation, planning, land management, transportation, and public health industries in expanding best practices in the active community environments knowledge base. In our Healthy Communities Surveillance & Management Toolkit alpha and beta test communities in Indiana, we have learned that community collaboration, a focus on active lifestyles, and connectivity of important community destinations through non motorized transportation design is a highly desirable and effective strategy for preventing obesity and encouraging physical activity as a daily life choice. Our Safe Routes to Play project is a child centered transportation planning process designed to convene multi sector community representatives, including children, to plan safe, accessible routes from home, school and work to play spaces, natural areas and community recreation facilities. And providing quality of life professionals with information and education on the latest tools and strategies to create a healthier, more active population was a success. Innovative partnerships such as our cost share agreement with the US Forest Service and a growing team of professionals delivered strategic, cost effective results to parks and recreation professionals, city leaders, design professionals, and passionate supporters of great places to play on an international scale. We launched a monthly newsletter to over 5,550 subscribers, conducted relevant national surveys on current issues in parks and recreation leadership and management, and delivered more than 30 educational sessions worldwide. Our Operating and Advisory Boards are staffed by ardent volunteers who give their time and their wisdom to build better communities. We have embraced social media, actively building our Facebook and LinkedIn presence, and welcomed new Board members with celebrated expertise. And significantly, the Board voted to increase our staffing capacity by hiring an Initiatives Director to provide focused attention on advancing our mission. GP RED has enjoyed a very active year in 2012. We continue to build our foundation of organizational leadership, strengthen our capacity to measure strategies that help communities with complex built environment challenges, and provide high level educational tools and practices. Onward! Safe Routes to Play Education program delivery and partnership development continued. Grant opportunities and potential funders to support the Safe Routes to Play initiative were explored. Partnerships continued with International Mountain Bike Association and Safe Routes to School National Partnerships. Safe Routes to Play concepts inspired projects in Colorado and New Hampshire. Healthy Communities Research Group Surveillance & Management Toolkit REDLine Surveys Developed with in-kind support from RRC Associates, nationwide surveys on shade policies and succession planning were conducted. Results indicate a need for more information and education on the benefits of shade structures and policies, and increased attention to transition planning for agencies facing succession issues. Research and recommendations for parks and recreation were completed at alpha test site Bloomington, Indiana and initiated at beta test site South Bend, Indiana. South Bend, Indiana Active Youth Coalition created to address childhood obesity issues.
