EAST CAROLINA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF NURSING Application Deadlines All applications must be received or postmarked by the published deadlines. Late applications will not be considered. February 1 by 5:00 PM: Fall semester application deadline. All prerequisites must be completed by the end of the spring semester prior to start of BSN courses. September 1 by 5:00 PM: Spring semester application deadline. All prerequisites must be completed by the end of the fall semester prior to start of BSN courses. Instructions for Completing Application Section I Section II Enter the semester and year for which you are applying to begin the nursing program, not the current semester. Provide a permanent address and local address if applicable. Correspondence will be sent to your permanent address unless you specify your current address. Please specify by placing an X in the appropriate space beside the address in which you would like to receive a hard copy or your admission letter. If your address changes, please contact Student Services at (252) 744-6414 or email joness@ecu.edu. 1. Current Enrollment You must be currently enrolled at ECU or admitted to ECU by the time the College of Nursing applications are reviewed. If you are not currently enrolled or have been out of the university for one or more semesters, please complete the ECU Undergraduate admission application or readmission application online at www.ecu.edu/admissions/. Otherwise, we will consider your application incomplete and your application will not be evaluated for admission. Students who entered ECU as Freshmen a. If you have taken courses at other institutions prior to or while enrolled at ECU (summers included) please be sure that official transcripts have been sent to ECU so that you can receive credit for the course(s). In addition, please attach copies of unofficial transcripts from all institutions that you have attended so that original grades can be reviewed for GPA calculations and to confirm points earned or lost in the ranking formula. 2. Transfer Students a. Transfer students should apply to ECU Undergraduate Admissions at least 4 months in advance of the College of Nursing application deadline to allow adequate time for processing of the university application. Students are responsible for sending copies of updated transcripts or evidence of current enrollment in prerequisites to ECU. All transcripts or proof of current/planned enrollment in prerequisites must be received by the application deadline. Note: Official transcripts sent to the ECU Office of Undergraduate Admissions are not always available to the College of Nursing. You should also send an unofficial transcript to the College of Nursing to document completion of all course work, including recently completed courses. b. If you are currently enrolled in classes at another college other than ECU, you are required to provide copies of your grade report at the end of the semester so that we can update your file. 1

c. If you have previously been enrolled at ECU as a degree seeking student and have been out of the university one full semester or more you must apply for readmission to ECU. If you have been enrolled at another institution since your last enrollment at ECU you must provide ECU with official transcripts for evaluation, and an unofficial copy to the College of Nursing. d. When applying as a transfer student the review board will use your cumulative GPA from previous schools attended and ECU to determine your overall cumulative GPA for admission. Repeats in certain courses from previous schools are also a factor in determining rank. For more information on the ranking formula, please refer to the College of Nursing website at: BSN Ranking Formula e. Note: All students who graduate from ECU must have 12 credit hours of writing intensive (WI) course work. Most students transfer in 6 hours of English Composition which partially meets the WI requirement. Three hours are required to be in the major, which leaves most transfer students needing an additional 3 hours of WI credits to earn after admission to ECU. Courses only transfer as WI when the school you attended has a Writing Across the Curriculum program and your transcript designates the course as WI. Second degree students are only required to meet the 3 semester hour WI course in the major which is met by taking NURS 3520 (after admission). 3. Second Degree Students If you apply as a second undergraduate degree student, the review board will use your cumulative GPA from your first degree unless you have earned a minimum of 20 semester hours of credit since you completed the first degree. Once you ve completed at least 20 hours since graduation with your first degree, your cumulative GPA starts over from that point forward. Repeats are cumulative even if you have earned 20 hours beyond your first degree and your cumulative GPA has started over. 4. Military Students If you plan to pursue the BSN through a military officer commissioning program (AMEDD, AECP, MECP, NECP), please indicate which program and whether or not you have previously contacted the College of Nursing for review of your prerequisites and completion of your military documents. 5. LPN Verification fi Please print off verification of listing from the licensing state s website and include it with your application. If your verification printout is not provided/not listed by the deadline date, you will not receive the bonus point. The verification of listing must include the expiration date. If the documentation you submit does not include the expiration date it is not the correct verification and will not be used to award points. 6. Veteran Classification Verification Please attach documentation (either your military transcript or form DD 214) showing your classification as a veteran. If you have questions about proper documentation, please contact the CON Student Services office at 252-744-6477. 7. Honors College Only students who are currently enrolled in the Honors College will receive this bonus point. 8. HESI A2 Pre-Entrance Examination Students are required to take the HESI A2 pre-entrance exam prior to the nursing application deadline. Students achieving the required minimum scores of 75% or higher in all five required sections will be given preference when evaluating applicants for admission. The exam is offered through any Prometrics Testing Center and costs about $110.00. Students should plan to take their exam during their designated testing window (usually the semester before they apply). Students can only take the exam twice during their time at ECU, but are required to wait 3 months between test dates if a retest is needed. Registration, testing time frames and instructions to register for the HESI A2 exam are posted on the College of Nursing website at http://www.ecu.edu/csdhs/nursing/bsn_pread_exam.cfm. You will not be allowed register for the exam until your testing time frame is open. 2

You are required to attach a copy of your HESI A2 score report(s) for each attempt when you submit this application. Score reports can be found by logging into your Elsevier/My Evolve account and clicking the My Exams tab. 9. Attendance at Other Nursing School(s) Please complete this section if you have attended any other nursing school. You are required to provide a letter from the Dean or Director of your previous nursing program stating that you are eligible to continue in that nursing program to be considered for admission at East Carolina University College of Nursing. Section III Please supply the information regarding prerequisite course(s). All General Education and College of Nursing prerequisites and cognates must be completed prior to the beginning of the clinical nursing program. This section must be completed in order for your application to be reviewed. Please do not write see attached. For AP credit, put AP in the column. For courses transferred to ECU, put the semester these courses are listed under on your ECU Banner Transcript. (Example: 200930=Spring 2009; 201080=Fall 2010; 201040 or 201060=Summer 2010) If you have any blank spaces or you plan to take prerequisite courses in the semester for which you are applying; your application is premature and will be deemed ineligible. Section IV Criminal Background Check & Drug Testing (to be completed once you have been accepted) In order for students to participate in clinical experiences on campus and at clinical facilities, students are expected to complete confidentiality, health information, and criminal record forms to comply with the agency guidelines for healthcare policies and JCAHO standards. Drug testing is required prior to enrollment. (An unsatisfactory criminal background check, pending charges incurred at a later date, or positive drug test may prevent the student from enrolling in nursing courses). If you have a question about your personal criminal background history, contact Ms. Erin Rogers (rogerse@ecu.edu), Executive Director of Student Services, and clarify any issues prior to applying for the clinical program. Confirmation Information Applicants will receive an email within 3 weeks indicating that their BSN application has been received. Review of applications will begin after the final deadline for submission (February 1 st or September 1 st ). Once the applications are evaluated by the admissions committee, if further information is needed, we will contact you. All applicants will receive an email and a hard copy letter notifying them of their admission decision. Flu Vaccinations Applicants applying the BSN program will be required to provide documentation of the current flu season s vaccination if accepted into the program. If you are applying for spring admission (Sep. 1 deadline) and/or planning to apply for fall admission (Feb. 1 deadline), we encourage you to be proactive in completing your flu vaccination during the fall semester while the flu vaccine is still available. Vaccinations become scare after January making the flu vaccine requirement difficult to complete if you have not already done so. *New Rule: Beginning with the Fall 2018 admission cycle, students will only be permitted to apply for admission into the nursing program twice (two times). The count begins with the Fall 2018 cycle and previous attempts before Feb. 1, 2018 will not be counted. Students would still be eligible to apply as a 2 nd Degree Nursing student or as an RN/BSN candidate. 3
