Theme: Healthy, Active and Wise Make Health a Habit NATIONAL POSTER ART COMPETITION 2011-2012 Guidelines October 1, 2011-March 31, 2012 Revised June 3, 2011

Brief History and Mission Project Walking Fete: Make Health a Habit was created in 1995 in conjunction with The Links, Incorporated s National Walk-A-Thon. The 2009 2010 National Poster Art Competition theme, STEP UP, celebrated walking. The new theme for the 2011-2012 National Poster Art Contest, Healthy, Active and Wise, serves to and expand our health message to include a wider spectrum of healthy life style choices. This will allow for a more meaningful educational experience for the participants and a wider array of ideas to inspire their poster designs. National Poster Art Competition Throughout the year, students are taught the relationship between health and physical activity, especially walking. The program advocates field trips, classroom visits by health related professional speakers, health fairs, special health related events at community and/or church youth awareness sessions. The youth also learn how to think, create and draw using various artistic expressions. Professional artists, student artists, and volunteers with artistic backgrounds can be invited to help the students develop their skills. Chapters may elect to partner with a school, church, youth-serving organization, museum, local business, arts and medical departments of colleges and universities, nursing schools, hospitals, and other Links chapters, etc., or work independently. During the National Assembly year (even years) a chapter may choose to host a national poster art competition for youths, grades 1 12. Chapters conduct their local competition and award first, second and third place prizes. The winner in each category enters the Area judged competition. A local entry from the previous year may not be submitted for the Area judging competition during the National Assembly year. The four categories are: Category 1: grades 1-3 Category II: grades 4 6 Category III: grades 7 9 Category IV: grades 10 12 During the Area Conference year (uneven years), a chapter may choose to host a poster art competition in its local area for students in grades 1-12. The entries from this local competition may not be entered into the National Poster Art Competition the following National Assembly year. The chapter awards prizes and provides each student with a Certificate of Participation. Many chapters in the past have secured several prizes for first, second and third place winners from local vendors or businesses. Monetary awards from the Area and National Competitions are not distributed to winners of the local competition. Local competitions during the Area Conference year (uneven years) are separate from the National Poster Art Competition and will not be considered during the national year; the local competition and national competition are two separate activities. 2011-2012 National Poster Art Competition 1
