THE FESTIVAL: The Bayview LIVE Festival is an annual event located in Bayview Hunters Point created to highlight the beauty of performing and visual arts that reflect the cultural landscape of a the neighborhood while also shining a light on local businesses. The festival will attract major performers to the Bayview Hunters Point community while supporting the implementation of Mission Bit s STEM education participants and projects. THE CAUSE: The festival puts the A in S.T.E.M to make it S.T.E.A.M.!!!! Imprint.City will collaborate with Mission Bit, an organization offering free programming classes to youth in San Francisco, taught by computer science majors and supported by tech leaders and software developers. This also allows for CS majors to build a professional network, if they chose to pursue a career in tech. The first year s pilot project will specifically focus on youth from Bayview/Sunnydale. All participants will complete a final project which will be displayed at the festival. The Bayview LIVE Festival: Putting the A into S.T.E.M.
BayviewLIVE! Objectives Cultivation of arts and culture in the Bayview. Raising awareness and supporting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Education (STEM), providing resources targeting youth in public housing. EVENT PROGRAM SCHEDULE Bayview LIVE! will be a day long event, located on Egbert between Jennings & Third Streets and include: Noon-7:00pm Art Meets STEM (STEAM) Announcement of the partnership with the Mayor s Office, Supervisor Malia Cohen, Imprint.City, Young Community Developers, Mission Bit and the Bayview YMCA. Youth STEM projects displayed throughout the festival. Live mural painting and performances notable artists and DJs. Artists talks at participating businesses along the Third Street Corridor. Food and beverages provided by local merchants and food trucks.
S.T.E.M. Mission Bit Demographic Target Site Location: Bayview Hunters Point YMCA Why STEM in Bayview? By the year 2020, there will be 1.4 million jobs across the country in STEM related fields that will go unfulfilled. In 2014, only 5% of San Francisco public high school students were enrolled in a computer science course. Of the students that took that AP computer science exam in San Francisco, none were African American. Bayview Mission Bit Target Demographic Youth ages 14-24 Bayview/Sunnydale neighborhood. BayviewLIVE! Partners Bayview for Bayview Stevon Cook is a 3rd generation San Franciscan, Bayview native and alumnus of Thurgood Marshall High School. Stevon has pursued a career as an educator and social entrepreneur and has served as Co-Chair of the Prop H Community Advisory Committee, on Board of Directors for the San Francisco Achievers and a mentor with Student s Raising Above. Stevon now serves at the CEO for Mission Bit. Takija T. Gardner was raised in the Bayview. For the past 12 years, Takija has worked for the YMCA of San Francisco, a non-profit organization that has been in existence for over 160 years. She has worked in the capacity of Youth/Community Development and International Initiatives. Some of her accomplishments include representing the YMCA of San Francisco and the United States at the 16th World Council of YMCAs in Durban, South Africa and was award recipient of the New Perspectives/Character Development Award. Takija is currently Executive Director of the Bayview Hunters Point YMCA. Gina Fromer is a Bayview Hunters Point native who also served for 14 years as the District Vice President and Executive Director of the of San Francisco. Ms. Fromer has many honors for her community leadership, including the Jefferson Award, has an MS in Psychology and is a certified life coach. Gina Fromer was recently appointed to The Trust for Public Land as the California State Director. Shamann Walton is a key stakeholder in the Bayview-Hunter s Point community, leading the Young Community Developers (YCD) organization for over ten years. YCD to empower and inspire Southeast Sector Residents to engage in employment and educational opportunities. Shamann, a graduate of Morris Brown College, has also served in leadership positions at the Economic Opportunity Council of San Francisco s Potrero Hill Family Resource Center (PHFRC), San Francisco Department of Children, Youth and Their Families (DCYF) and now serves as a San Francisco Unified School District Commissioner.
