The UW-La Crosse Student Occupational Therapy Association and Occupational Therapy Program present the 12th Annual Occupational Therapy Distinguished Lecturers Ann O Sullivan, OTR/L, LSW, FAOTA & Catherine Verrier Piersol, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA Best Practice in Dementia Care: Applying the Evidence in Occupational Therapy Practice to Optimize Performance, Activity Engagement and Quality of Life Friday, March 2, 2018 University of Wisconsin La Crosse Student Union, Grandad Bluff Room Ann O Sullivan has 40 years of experience in rehabilitation, home health, seating & positioning, management, education, and community settings. She developed and managed the Family Caregiver Support Program at Southern Maine Agency on Aging for the past 16 years, and is currently working with researchers at Emory University to test a web-based platform for the Savvy Caregiver evidence-based program. Ann is a lead trainer for Matter of Balance, Savvy Caregiver, and Savvy Caregiver Advanced. She has contributed 8 chapters to professional texts and had 13 articles published. She presents locally and nationally about family caregivers and dementia and has developed training in dementia care for adult day service staff through a John T. Gorman Foundation grant. Ann was named a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association in 2011 for tireless leadership in homecare and family caregiving. Dr. Cathy Piersol is associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy and Director of Jefferson Elder Care at Thomas Jefferson University. Jefferson Elder Care seeks to bridge the gap between research and practice by providing evidence-based services in the community to people with dementia and their caregivers with the goal of optimizing participation and promoting quality of life and well-being. Dr. Piersol is a licensed occupational therapist, educator, and researcher with over 34 years of experience. In addition to current research studies evaluating community-based dementia interventions, she receives funding from the Pew Charitable Trust to implement an evidence-based program for elders with dementia and their caregivers living in the community. Dr. Piersol provides consultation and training to agencies and has presented extensively on best practice in dementia care. She co-authored A Caregiver s Guide to Dementia, and most recently, co-authored the 2017 edition of the Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Adults with Alzheimer s Disease and Related Neurocognitive Disorders and a systematic review of caregiver interventions published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy. At the conclusion of this session, participants will: 1. Recognize the impact of progressive cognitive loss on functional performance for people living with dementia and strategies for occupational therapy intervention. 2. Explain the important role occupational therapy plays in educating caregivers of people with dementia. 3. Describe the empirical evidence that informs occupational therapy treatment and caregiver training approaches. 4. Apply knowledge and skills to practice when working with people living with dementia and their family caregivers. 8:15 am - 9:00 am: Registration Agenda: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm: Lecture (Part 1) 12:00 om- 12:45 pm: Lunch 12:45 pm - 2:15 pm Lecture (Part 2) 2:15 pm - 3:00 pm Meet & Greet with Presenters
