Introduction This is a partial summary of the service records of those members, past members, and alumni of the Melbourne University Hockey Club (founded 1907) who served in the First World War. It includes any known features of their involvement with MUHC, their course at the University of Melbourne, college (if applicable), and their secondary school. The information here has primarily been sourced from the University of Melbourne s Record of active service of teachers, graduates, undergraduates, officers and servants in the European War, 1914-1918 (Melbourne: H.J. Green, Govt. Printer, 1926). Further information was taken from World War 1 Personal Service Records in the National Archives of Australia, and some additional minor sources. Of the 32 men who had played InterVarsity to that point (men s contests having begun in 1909), 24 joined up. At least three other men from the club also served; It is likely that there were other individuals from MUHC who also served in the war, but sadly very little records exist of the club s early history and members, save for team lists from the annual InterVarsity matches. Notable is that two women from MUHC served as well (again, it may be that there were more, but records for women s service are very patchy and scattered). If you do happen to have any additional information, please contact the club. - April 2015
