This student competition supports each of these goals and we invite you to bring your best ideas forward for this event Our aim is simple: Provide an opportunity for development and presentation of unique design solutions for review by a professional jury, and the public-at-large. This opportunity allows design students the chance to augment their portfolio while also providing exposure to a professional setting. Student entrants are strongly encouraged to work as teams to collaborate across multiple disciplines (to include those outside of the design professions). In celebration of our fifth competition anniversary, IDSA-STL has partnered with the Saint Louis Science Center, who will serve in a client-advisory capacity during development of solutions, with opportunities for real-time feedback to competitors upon request. IDSA-STL will serve as liaison. THE CHALLENGE: Design comes in many forms, and exists at varying scales. Your challenge is to evaluate and define a solution to the scenario presented below (bearing in mind that how you approach the problem is equally as important as what you do with it): The mission of the Saint Louis Science Center is To ignite and sustain lifelong science and technology learning. 5/08/2015 2015 IDSA-STL Student Design Competition P a g e 1 of 7
The Science Center is an informal learning environment where people of all ages and backgrounds engage with science, technology, engineering and math. Established in 1985, the Saint Louis Science Center serves more than one million people each year, both at their facilities and off-site. The Science Center s campus includes the James S. McDonnell Planetarium, located in Forest Park, the main building on Oakland Avenue, and the Taylor Community Science Resource Center, located at the southwest corner of Kingshighway Boulevard and Manchester Avenue. Near the Taylor Community Science Resource Center is an undeveloped area owned by the Saint Louis Science Center, currently referred to as Science Corner. Science Corner is comprised of approximately 42,000 square feet of land and located at the northeast corner of Kingshighway and Manchester, within the City of Saint Louis. Science Corner sits at one of the busiest intersections in the city of St. Louis and is an entrance to the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood and The Grove entertainment district. THE TASK: Conceptualize, develop, and deliver an innovative design solution which enacts the Science Center s mission and engages the community in and around Science Corner in transformative ways. The design solution must be sensitive to the needs of the surrounding Forest Park Southeast neighborhood. Additional considerations may address staffing, architecture,, digital technology, and other topics students determine to be pertinent. Design processes employed should consider the methods by which the Science Center can communicate with and support the St. Louis region. 5/08/2015 2015 IDSA-STL Student Design Competition P a g e 2 of 7
