C arey Baker, former State Senator, was the featured speaker at our first program remembering the 59th Anniversary of the signing of the Armistice ending hostilities in the Korean war. Under a beautifully clear blue sky R ICHARD CHARLES CHRISTIE, 81, Mount Dora, FL passed away July 12, 2012 at The Villages Hospice House. He was born March 28, 1931 in New Baltimore, MI, son of Francis Christie and Madelyn Goslyn. A US Army veteran, he served during the Korean War and was a at the recentlycompleted Veterans Memorial at Fountain Park, Mr. Baker reviewed the major campaigns of the Korean War, and finished by elucidating, what he saw as the seven lessons learned. Program Chairperson, Wally Jones, did not only an outstanding job keeping the program very focused, he also RICHARD Dick CHRISTIE retired banker. Mr. Christie was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, and the United Nations Service Medal for his Korean Service. He was a member of the Korean War Veterans Association of Lake County, Chapter 169, and American Legion Post 35. Joel served in the 802nd Engr. in 1958-61, and learned of us from the Daily Sun. Joel and his wife Lilah live on S.E. 173rd Place in Summerfield. Welcome Joel! And on Monday, we received Art Boucher s application to join the Chapter. Art lives on Hawthorne Blvd, Leesburg, and served with the 7th Div. 32nd Regt Tank Co. He already was an Association member. Welcome Art! Despite regularly obtaining new members, membership has remained stable in the mid 80 s. A couple of members, one a long-time member, chose to not renew despite phone calls and other efforts to keep them. And there are now a couple of members who are now overdue (inactive). So, with Joel and Art, we have 87 Active members, two Inactive members, and five honorary Chapter members, giving a total of 92. At 87 members, we are far larger than the next largest FL chapter, 173 with 51. Thank you all! Donation to Senior Center t the Member Meeting a motion was offered and approved A to donate a badly-needed refrigerator to the Senior Center. An 18 cf Frigidaire refrigerator was purchased on July 28 at Lowe s Mount Dora, and delivered on Monday, July 30, much to the pleasure of the Center s staff. Its list price was $499.00; with a 10 percent discount, the final cost was $449.10. Past donations were sporadic at best; sometimes we gave $200 a year. Last year we gave only $127. So, the size of this year s donation is, in a sense, catching up on our regular annual contribution to the Center. Also, keep in mind that per our bylaws, we are committed to donate one-half of our non-dues income to charity/scholarship. This goes into the charity side Financial Report Treas. Art Canale (photo at right) presented Judy Christie with the American Flag. Art did this with extraordinary service and dedication, and we thank him for it. It would have been nice for other chapter member to have witnessed this. Why only 5? Why did only five of the 90 or so of you pay your last respects to Dick? I ve pondered this question a good bit. Could it be, as my wife suggested, that I did a poor job of informing you? I suppose, but the five that attended as well as several more obviously got the message! Obviously, I did a poor job of convincing you that this was important enough for you to attend! That is a failure of mine that frankly is painful! What activity was more important golf? softball? shopping? What kept you away from one of your most important duties of KWVA Membership? Art said he had two other activities scheduled prior to receiving the message. But he canceled those because, he said paying my last respects is my top priority. So, what really kept you from Dick s service, and the excellent luncheon that followed it? Might it just be apathy you just don t give a damn. That is until it s your turn. Extracted from the Orlando Sentinel on July 17, 2012 TELL AMERICA & TA FUND DRIVES R eminder Our Tell America/Scholarship program is named The John Yohn TELL AMERICA program. We soon plan to develop the Fall 2012 TA Schedule, which normally has been light. But the results of the Eustis High School interviews, and possibly similar interview programs at Mount Dora and Tavares are yet to be assessed. On the TA Fund Drive part of this, we need to begin now to obtain permissions to hold our fall TA Fund Drives. So, I am asking the leaders of the Spring events to begin contacting their stores. We are also inviting all members, especially new ones, to join in.

"We're here to tell residents about our organization and the Tell America Program. We go around to the local schools and we tell them about the Korean War;" Brown said. MacArthur and out of 1,200 students that I've shown that picture to, only two girls have been able to (identify him) and that's not very good," said Dwight Brown, vice president. Throughout the school year, members of the organization visit local schools to teach students about the war. They also brought the education to residents "The Korean War is known as The Forgotten War and the main goal is to teach the children that it's not forgotten. That there was a reason for the war and the people who served in the war are proud to have done so," Brown said. The one-day event netted Chapter 169 $1,2672.35!! The highest ever. H.R. 5903 C ongressman Sam Johnson (Texas) has introduced a Bill, H.R. 5903, to amend the IRS code of 1986 to treat recipients of the Korean Defense Service Medal as war veterans for purposes of determining whether contributions to post and organizations of war veterans are charitable. Call or email your Representative now and ask them to cosponsor H.R. 5903. C arol Becker (right) delivered 51 quilts to the children at Camp Boggy Creek, whose mission is to enrich the lives of seriously ill children. We may want to include Camp Boggy Creek in our future.
Page 6 Vol. 15, No. 7 July 2012 The Scuttlebutt Chapter lapel pins B ill Shumaker has proposed that the Chapter develop a lapel pin depicting a KWVA theme. Bill suggested a pin 3/4- inches in diameter. Various designs were discussed, including the Florida patch and the Korean War and Service Veterans, both of which were designed by Don Struhar, a friend of Carol Becker. We asked Carol to approach Don about making us a unique design, but one that would be suitable for all of KWVA. Sick Call That was Tuesday at the Board meeting. On Wednesday at the member meeting, Carol brought us a sketch of Don s beautiful new design. One that easily met all the criteria outlined previously. When we were at M & H Awards, we obtained an estimate for pins. These were as follows: setup charge $160.00; $2.50 each for a quantity of 100 minimum. In this case, a realistic unit price would be about $4-$5 each. Chapter leadership P resident Thiel asked Don Van Beck to head up a Nominating Committee to develop candidates for all elected offices (President through Secretary and Treasurer) by the October meeting. Because of lack of computer skills among the membership, over the last half-dozen years most of the Chapter records and operations have migrated to Tom s personal computer. Don plans to dissect these duties and operations and distribute them among the five elected officers and various other Chapter Members. To help these new leaders, Don plans to hold classes in computer systems as applied specifically to Chapter 169 records. These will focus on MS Word and Excel, and on Internet access, especially access to the Association Membership DB. Don anticipates holding multiple sessions at the Business Resource Center at Lake Sumter Community College in Leesburg. He has asked Tom to teach these training sessions where each attendee will have access to their own desktop computer. Tom served as president of the Lake-Sumter Computer Society for four years, and has made many dozens of computer presentations, and he has conducted sessions at the BRC training facility. Don is looking for members willing to serve as a Chapter officer or in other roles yet to be defined in this process. Don is also looking for computer experience and talent from the newly-forming Chapter 169 Ladies group. If you have some computer experience, or are willing to work with someone who is able to do the necessary computer operations, please call Don at 352 343-1529. Don would also like to hear from ladies who have computer experience and would like to help the chapter with its systems. If you do not have MS Word and Excel, plans are to provide you with a licensed copy.
The Scuttlebutt Vol. 15, No. 7 July 2012 Page 7 LADIES PROGRAMS (Spouses, Friends, and Surviving Spouses) A Chapter 169 ladies program has been under consideration by the Board and others for some time. Our goals here are to: a) provide a venue for spouses and surviving spouses to meet simultaneously with our regular member meeting, b) to seek the skills and talents, especially computer, of our ladies to aid us in carrying out the goals and objectives of the Chapter, and c) to enhance member meeting attendance. There shall be no dues for ladies and spouse membership, and their participation in Chapter activities shall be encouraged, except that voting at Board and Chapter Meetings is restricted, per Association bylaws, to Active KWVA members. They shall be issued regular name badges. We asked DJ Lynch to invite Dee Peever of Wildwood to come to our July meeting to tell us about her experiences with Suncoast Chapter 14, in St. Petersburg. (Dee is a friend of member Dick Zettlemoyer). Jackets, Golf Shirts, etc. W e researched a color guard jacket design at M & H Awards Eustis, the providers of our Caps as well as previous color guard jackets. We can get them for $38.00 each with a one-time setup fee of $75.00, with a minimum of 24. The Board decided to not provide Color Guard members with jackets because they do not use them often enough to warrant their $600.00 purchase. Members present at the July meeting also did not indicate they would obtain enough of them to warrant the us going ahead with this effort. Projector: Board Actions July 24 Motion made at June Member Meeting to obtain a projector and screen. Gene Vollmer researched and made a recommendation. A motion was made and approved at the member meeting that we obtain this projector. Gene will proceed with procuring the unit (he got a special offer at around $440.00). We can use the Senior Center s screen. A motion was offered and approved to develop a viable ladies program in KWVA Chapter 169.
