November 2-3, 2012 State BOM meeting Pere Marquette Hotel, Peoria November 11, 2012 Veteran s Day Activities Downtown & Camp Butler ILSSAR 122nd Annual Conference Held in Springfield May18th & May 19th at the Springfield Hilton Attending the Annual Conference from the Springfield Chapter were Stephen Bradley, Toby Chamberlain, Richard Chamblin, Jared Dietz, Jacob Dietz, Ken Griffin, Dan Hrenko, R. Garey Hodge, Lou Myers, Karl Reed, Cletis Underwood and Weldon Woods. There was a large crowd at the Annual Meeting including Terry Lynch, the keynote speaker. Terry is a professional actor from Chicagoland. He gave an interesting performance as Alexander Hamilton. Terry has presented many programs about historical individuals for presentations for school groups, and adults. He has participated in the Emerald City Theater and performed in professional theater, radio and television around Chicago. From the President Wow! What a night for the Springfield chapter at the ILSSAR 122 nd Annual Congress Dinner and Awards Night. If you were not there, you missed an impressive night not only for our chapter but for some of our members. Thanks to many of our chapter compatriots and their dedication and hard work, the Springfield Chapter was honored as the ILSSAR Chapter of the Year. Additionally, the chapter received a certificate for Perfect Attendance at all 2011 ILSSAR Board of Mangers Meetings. The chapter was also awarded Flag Streamers for our participation in the ILSSAR Flag Award and Veterans Affairs programs. Seven chapter compatriots were awarded 10 individual awards. Six members were presented SAR Rosette Lapel Pins. Springfield Chapter and its Members Honored by State Society The Springfield Chapter and some of its individual members and friends of the Chapter were honored at the ILSSAR Conference. Springfield Selected as Outstanding Chapter for 2011-2012 The Springfield Chapter was honored as the ILSSAR Chapter of the Year during the 2012 Awards night. Presenting the award to July 2012/Page1

Springfield Chapter President Toby Chamberlain, ILLSAR State President Franz Herder reviewed Springfield accomplishments that included color guard participation in 10 events, the Outstanding Citizenship, Flag Awards, Eagle Scout, Honor Flight programs and the chapter s 115 continuous years. Springfield Chapter Newsletter The Joel Willis Newsletter flag streamer was given to the Springfield Chapter for being one of only four (4) ILSSAR chapters who published chapter newspapers of at least four pages quarterly. Thanks to all members who submit articles and pictures for the paper. Springfield Chapter Receives Presidential Citation The Springfield Chapter was awarded the ILSSAR Presidential Unit Citation for being one of eleven (11) ILSSAR chapters with perfect attendance at all ILSSAR Board of Managers Meetings. Our chapter members deserve a salute for all their work on behalf of Illinois Society of SAR. Toby Chamberlain Receives Both the Silver Color Guard Medal and Joe Smith Color Guardsman of the Year Award Toby Chamberlain has been a member of the Springfield Chapter for five years. During that time he has been extremely active in chapter and ILSSAR events. Toby has been active with the 115 th Anniversary Award Dinner and currently serves as President of the Springfield Chapter and serves on the ILSSAR Board of Managers. Toby Chamberlain has served the Illinois Society as a Color Guard member and has participated in presenting the color at meetings and has marched in multiple Illinois State Fair parades. Lou Myers Honored with Meritorious Service Award The Meritorious Service Award is for long, faithful and meritorious service to the Springfield Chapter and the Illinois Society. The Meritorious Service Award is second only to the Patriot Award in significance. Lou has been a member of SAR for Seven (7) years. He has served on the ILSSAR BOM for most of that time. Lou has provided service to C.A.R. for many years. He has served on the Army's Reserve Officers Corp for many years and travels to Washington DC frequently to carry out those responsibilities. Lou has been active in nearly all of the Springfield Chapter committees; including 115th Anniversary Committee, Outstanding Citizenship Committee, Eagle Scouts, Veterans Committee and Color Guard. Lou served as President of the Springfield Chapter from 2009 2010. In addition, Lou has been extremely active in recruiting new members and helping to rebuild the Springfield Chapter. Currently, Lou is the Central Region Vice President for ILSSAR. Polly Myers Receives 2 nd Martha Washington Award Paula (Polly) Myers, a member of the Captain William Penny DAR Chapter, has been instrumental in helping to rebuild the Springfield Chapter twice. She first worked to rebuild the chapter in the 1990s and now again in 2011. During this past year, Polly has worked extremely hard to recruit and to help conduct the genealogy research for many new members. Specifically in 2011 Polly s activities resulted in eleven new members for the Springfield Chapter. In addition, Polly is in the process with helping four (4) more new recruits with their membership applications. The SAR Martha Washington Award is designed to be given to any DAR member who July 2012/Page 2

is instrumental in securing 10 new ILSSAR members. In addition to her past recruiting activities over 20 years, Polly Myers has helped recruit nearly twice that many ILSSAR members in 2011 alone. Sue Chamberlain Receives SAR Medal of Appreciation Sue Chamberlain, a member of the Captain William Penny DAR Chapter, was presented the SAR Medal of Appreciation at the 2012 ILLSAR Awards night ceremony. In presenting the award ILLSAR President Franz Herder recognized Sue as the primary host guide for NSSAR Secretary and NSSAR President General elect Steven Leishman during his three day visit to Springfield to attend the Springfield Chapter 115 th Anniversary Dinner. Sue has also assisted with transportation arrangements for Illinois State Fair Color Guard participants and taken photos of ILSSAR and Springfield Chapter Color Guard events. Jacob and Jared Dietz Receive Bronze Color Guard Medals Springfield Chapter Color Guard members Jacob and Jared Dietz received SAR Bronze Color Guard Medals at the ILSSAR Awards night Ceremony. The Dietz s brothers have participated in Illinois State Fair Parade, Petersburg Harvest Fest Parade and Presented the Colors at the Springfield Chapter 115 th Anniversary Dinner and the ILLSAR State Dinner and Awards Night. Springfield Chapter Color Guard Commander Bob Dennison Awarded Bronze Color Guard Medal Veteran Springfield Chapter Color Guard Commander Bob Dennison was awarded the SAR Bronze Color Medal at the 2012 ILSSAR Awards Night. Bob was unable to attend the event and his medal was accepted by Toby Chamberlain. Bob will receive his award at the next Springfield Chapter meeting. Toby Chamberlain and Welton Woods Receives War Service Medals SAR War Service Medals were awarded to chapter compatriots Toby Chamberlain and Welton Woods during the ILLSAR 2012 Awards night ceremonies. Richard Chamblin Receives Membership Certificate Compatriot Richard Chamblin became the newest Springfield Chapter member when he was presented his SAR membership certificate by State President Franz Herder at the May 19th ILSSAR BOM meeting Congratulations Compatriot Chamblin. Karl Reed presented with Oak Leaf Cluster to Silver Color Guard Medal Long time Springfield and ILSSAR Color Guard member Karl Reed was awarded the SAR Oak Leaf Cluster to go with his Silver Color Guard Medal at the ILSSAR Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony. Karl has appeared in multiple Illinois State Fair Parades, along with community parades, SAR and DAR grave markings. Additionally, Karl also received an ILSSAR Certificate of Appreciation for his support of ILSSAR activities. Law Enforcement Award Springfield Police Sergeant David Wesselman is the recipient of the Springfield SAR Chapter 2012 Law Enforcement Award. The Law Award Ceremony was featured on Springfield radio, TV stations and a story in the Springfield State-Journal Register. The July 2012/Page 3

ceremony was attended by many Springfield and Sangamon County officials that included Springfield Mayor J. Michael Houston, Springfield Police Chief Robert Williams and Sangamon County Sheriff Neil Williamson. with us. If you like information about the color guard, contact any chapter color guard member. Memorial Day at Camp Butler LtoR Toby Chamberlain, Lleyton Turk, Graham Turk and Dan Hrenko L-R- Sergeant David Wesselman, Toby Chamberlain and Terry Lucas Sergeant Wesselman, in addition to his regular police duties has organized fundraising for the St. Jude s Children s Cancer Program and his efforts has raised more than $100,000 for the charity. Thanks go to chapter Compatriot Terry Lucas for making this award happen. SAR Rosette Pins presented to six Springfield Chapter members Six Springfield Chapter compatriots, Richard Chamblin, Jacob Dietz, Jared Dietz, Dan Hrenko, Cletis Underwood and Welton Woods were presented their SAR Rosette Lapel Pins by ILLSAR President Franz Herder and Springfield Chapter President Toby Chamberlain at the ILLSAR Annual dinner and Awards Ceremony. Busy time for Chapter Color Guard May and June were busy months for the chapter color guard with appearances at Camp Butler, Moweaqua, Chatham and Rochester. While we have some very active color guard members we are looking for new men to join Again this year the Springfield Chapter Color Guard continued its long tradition of participating in the Memorial Day ceremony at Camp Butler National Cemetery. Attending this year s event was chapter President Toby Chamberlain and his two grandsons, CAR members Lleyton and Graham Turk, and chapter Vice President Dan Hrenko Moweaqua Pow Wow Parade The Springfield chapter Color Guard marched in the Moweaqua Pow Wow Parade. Representing the Springfield Chapter this year were Bob Dennison, Dan Hrenko and David Jackson. Guard helped lead the 2012 Chatham Homecoming Days Parade. The Brillhart sisters, who were making their debut with the Springfield Color Guard, are the granddaughters of Springfield Chapter Vice President Dan Hrenko. In addition to Marching in the Parade, Cora and Sadie graciously carried the Illinois Society Sons of the American Revolution Parade banner which announces to everyone who our group presents. Dressed in their colonial outfits, Sadie and Cora have cornered the market on cute and were the hit of the parade. Thanks girls! Also taking part were Toby Chamberlain, Bob Dennison, Lou Myers and Karl Reed. Springfield Color Guard leads Rochester Sparkle Parade With temperatures approaching 100 degrees four Springfield Color Guard members Toby Chamberlain, Jacob Dietz, Dan Hrenko, Karl Reed and banner bearers Cora and Sadie Brillhart led this year s Rochester Fourth of July Sparkle Parade. The chapter color guard received several standing ovations during the course of the parade. Check out the Newly Revised Website! The Springfield Chapter now has a great website. The domain address is: http://springfieldsar.org/ Please note many important items: 1) you can fill out any supplemental application right on line and save it to your hard drive, 2) prospective members can fill out a draft application right on line, 3) 40 pages of historical information regarding the patriots buried in Sangamon County, 4) a description of Springfield Chapter activities and programs, 5) a brief chapter history, 6) a calendar of future events and, 7) pictures of recent events. Also note the list of Revolutionary Patriots and their wives of the Springfield Chapter members. If your patriot(s) is missing it is because you have never turned in your membership application (preferably a record copy) to Karl Reed @ 4609 Bears Paw Ct., Springfield, IL 62711-7897. Turn in a copy of your membership application and we can add your patriot. Your membership application helps us with the genealogy of new members. Please help by turning in a copy of your application. Chapter Meeting Speaker Chapter Compatriot Brigadier General Lou Myers will be the featured speaker at the July 21 st chapter meeting at the MCL Cafeteria on Wabash Ave. in Springfield. Lou will speak about his experiences during the Korean War. Lou entered the service as a Private and held every enlisted rank before being promoted to 2 nd Lieutenant. After that he advanced up the officer ranks and retired a General Officer. This is a true life story you should not miss. Paul Strohecker s Membership Applications Approved by NSSAR In early May, Paul Strohecker s application for membership was approved by the National Society. Paul is from Tallula. His patriot ancestor is John Strohecker who served as a Sergeant in the PA Militia. When you meet Paul, please introduce yourselves and welcome him to SAR. July 2012/Page 5
