About the service Simeon Care for the Elderly Limited is registered to provide a care service to a maximum of 23 older people of whom up to six may have a learning disability and two which may be respite/short break places. At the time of the inspection 23 people were residing at the home. The home is set in very pleasant and picturesque grounds in Bieldside, west of Aberdeen. The current home was built in the grounds of the previous care home. The residents moved from the previously registered care home to the new purpose-built one in September 2015. Simeon is part of Camphill Communities which aims to create a nurturing environment in which individuals of all ages can fulfil their potential. "Everyone is encouraged to participate, to the extent of their disabilities, in a life of their own and the wider community. We have supported older people to live an active, meaningful and purposeful life in a community of care. Simeon offers a small home and a care model that is able to adapt to meet the physical, social, mental, and spiritual needs of our residents." This service has been registered since 1 April 2002. What people told us We spoke with 15 residents and five family members during or following our inspection visit. Comments included: - "Caring, loving, approachable, helpful." - "They listen to the residents." - "Excellent care - just the best - couldn't wish for better." - "Involve the residents in everything." - "Skilled staff." - "Always spotlessly clean, smells lovely. They help my family to keep their room tidy. They ensure my family member is always well presented." - "The food is always lovely and plentiful." - "Lovely care here. You can call for help, they are very attentive. There's lots to do if you want to join in or you can watch. They look out for everyone. They are kind and gentle. They look after us so well. They teach the young staff to be respectful and do things properly. We want for nothing. People go outside whenever they want." - "It's very high quality of surroundings. Always, absolutely always, fresh flowers on the tables, always beautiful. The views are so beautiful too, relaxing, wildlife, flowers, plants, and trees. Some of us are lucky to have our own gardens off our bedrooms [all the ground floor rooms]." page 2 of 7
- "I am delighted my family member is here. I can't fault anything or think of anything that can improve. They work hard and work well together to sort things. There is always someone around to support residents." - "I get peace of mind. I can leave here safe in the knowledge my family member is well cared for. I can sleep at night. I can approach anyone here. There is high maintenance in the home - it is very well looked after." - "You couldn't get nicer people to look after you." - "Lots of resources. Very good ratio of staff. The care is good, proactive floor staff. The environment is superb, well thought out, well put together, great feeling in the building. The garden is excellent. Very caring staff. The quality of care and support is quite admirable. A weakness in some communication has been acknowledged." (This is being worked on; meetings have resumed, a staff photo/biography folder is being introduced, names of who is on duty is noted on board at entrance, new activity coordinator and gardener employed.) Self assessment Not applicable - a self assessment was not requested by us. From this inspection we graded this service as: Quality of care and support Quality of environment Quality of staffing Quality of management and leadership 6 - Excellent 6 - Excellent not assessed not assessed What the service does well We assessed the service to be performing at an excellent level. We were delighted to see that the service continued to build on the previous excellent standards of care and support. People expressed very high levels of satisfaction with all aspects of the service provided. We observed people receiving care full of love, warmth and fun. People told us they were treated with respect at all times. We observed unhurried, person-centred care being provided by very good levels of staff. People told us they consistently experienced very high standards of care. Staff expressed a high level of job satisfaction. People told us about being able to have meaningful days where they could undertake or watch all kinds of activities, both in and out of the home. We observed great conversations between residents and staff where the uniqueness of each person was acknowledged. There was excellent evidence of people being encouraged and enabled to make informed choices. People told us the poetry group was very important to them. One person told us the story telling was "calming, relaxing and peaceful". A new nature, crafts and activities leader and a gardener had been employed and with the improved weather, people were looking forward to even more naturebased activities. We observed staff to respond to two separate unexpected medical situations in a very prompt, professional and calm way. The excellent responses ensured the people and others around remained calm and provided reassurances that the situations were being properly managed. page 3 of 7
The purpose-built home in beautiful grounds opened at the end of 2015 was now well lived in and maintained to an excellent standard. People found it very comfortable and easy to get around in. More dementia-friendly signage was being put in place to provide a consistent message to aid orientation. Everyone had their own en suite bathing facilities. The communal bathroom designs were being further improved to provide even better dementia/sight impaired/disability facilities. People living on the ground floor benefitted from direct patio door access from their rooms to their own garden areas. There were many other doors from which to access the garden. The specialist dementia-designed garden was loved by all we spoke with. People were looking forward to new chickens in the garden. What the service could do better We asked the management to consider how people can be supported to maintain good hand hygiene, such as washing hands before meal times. We are confident the service will take this forward. The home has both a catering kitchen, where the main meal preparation is carried out by catering staff, and a 'home kitchen', where food is served from and snacks/beverages are prepared. Meals and snack times are very important to the ethos at Simeon Care for the Elderly where there is a coming together of the community. However, we saw a high volume of people using the 'home kitchen' especially at mealtimes. The management should look at how this high level of people traffic can be reduced to ensure a safe kitchen and high standards of food hygiene is maintained. We are confident the service will look to improve this.
