The Sub-Saharan Africa Cisco Academy Training Centre hosted in the School of ICT obtained recognition by Cisco in 2009 as one of the two best CATCs in the world. The Automotive Components Technology Station (ACTS) was rated as the best technology station in the country in 2009 and classified as world class by gtz. A grant agreement was signed with the Tshumisano Trust in 2007 to support ACTS (R6, 1 million for a 3-year period). The VWSA-DAAD International Chair in Automotive Engineering commenced on 01 April 2007 (R7 million over a 5-year period). The GMSA Chair in Mechatronics was established and commenced on 1 January 2009 (R3, 6 million over a 5-year period). A MoU was signed in 2009 with Mercedes-Benz South Africa (Pty) to facilitate the creation of a local centre of automotive expertise. Two research vehicles were donated. The Merseta Chair in Engineering Development (Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services SETA) was established and commenced on 1 April 2010 (R3 million over a 3-year period). New research entities were established in the faculty including the Friction Processing Research Institute (2008), Centre for Manufacturing & Mechatronics (2009), the Unit for Lean Process Development (2009), the Research and Outreach Unit in Technology Education (2009), the Wind Energy Research Group (2010), the Built Environment Research Centre (2011) and the restructuring of the Institute for ICT Advancement (2008). The faculty successfully obtained accreditation for the relevant academic programmes (NDip, BTech & BEng) from the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) (2007, 2009, 2011), the Chartered Institute of Building (2009), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (2009 & 2010) and the South Africa Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (2010). The School of Engineering s entsa division secured contract research for industry including a R3, 1 million (2009), R20 million (2010), and R10, 7 million (2011) contracts. The R26, 7 million TETRA Training Academy and Research Centre was established in the School of ICT in 2010. 19

The South African Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) Science Technology Engineering and Related Management Fields Pipeline Project (STEM) was implemented in 2010 (R3, 5 million over a 3-year period). An agreement was signed with the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) in 2010 to support ACTS (R2 million/year). International collaboration with universities was further enhanced which include active partnerships and joint research projects with universities in Germany, Finland, Hungary, UK, USA, India, and other. Die Burger Lenteskool was established in 2009. The AIDC Winter School was further enhanced and developed. The School of Engineering Grade 12 Design Competition was launched in 2010. The Mentorship Programme involving retired engineers and senior students to enhance student success was implemented in 2010. The WeldCore team won the National Innovation Competition in 2010 and the NSTF Team Award in 2011. The Easter Cape Technology Research Activity Center (TRAC-EC) was further enhanced and developed. NMMU has gained the prestigious status of being an Institute of Sectoral or Occupational Excellence (ISOE) in 2010 accredited with the merseta which is the first time that merseta accredited a university. The Construction Industry Development Board Centre of Excellence was obtained in 2011 (R3 million rand over a 3-year period). The merseta Maths, Science and Engineering Development Plan (MSEDP) was established in Somerset-East DOE Cluster of the Eastern Cape in 2011 (R1, 2 million project). The Faculty Student Academic Forum was established in 2011 to ensure that students have appropriate structures, in collaboration with the SRC, to enhance quality of teaching and learning within the faculty. The NMMU Formula Student Team built a racing car and participated as the first team from Africa in the German competition in August 2011. Secure a funding grant of R11, 3 million on 3 October 2011 from the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) for the further development of the WeldCore technology. The Ford Engine Research Unit was officially opened by the CEO of FMCSA on 6 June 2012, where Ford agreed to provide R250 000 per annum for five years plus inflationary adjustments. Eveready (PTY)LTD confirmed in May 2012 that they approved the establishment of the Eveready Chair/Unit in Wind Energy at NMMU, valued at R400 000 per year for five years. (When I left NMMU by end June 2012, the contract was still in the legal process). The National Department of Human Settlements confirmed on 18 June 2012 that the proposal for the Education Chair in Human Settlement Development at NMMU, valued at R10, 3 million over a three-year period, was approved.
