Stress Management During Job Search Stress builds up when you don t deal with issues. And when you re searching for a job, you almost always have other issues begging for your attention. Keep your job search on track by paying attention to all aspects of your health. Here are some healthy ways to handle stress... Get organized. Create a structure for your job search. Exercise daily. Walk, run, jog, swim, bike, dance, etc. Eat healthy. Eat three balanced meals a day. Avoid unhealthy habits. Limit junk food, sugar, caffeine, and watching television. Avoid alcohol, drugs, and smoking. Rest. Get plenty of sleep. Write. Write in a diary for 20 minutes each day. Record your thoughts and feelings about your job search, what you learn, and your progress. Attend job support groups or clubs. Share ideas and tips, accept and give praise. Be flexible. Stay open to new ideas, think creatively, and take risks. Take one thing at a time. Prioritize and make one change at a time, because many changes add stress. Reward yourself. Do something for yourself when you accomplish certain job search activities and goals. For example, take some time to be alone or to learn something new. Accept. Take what you cannot change, change what you can, and forgive yourself and others. Volunteer. Doing something for others increases your self-esteem, your network, and your skills. Find humor. Watch children at play, and find time for play. Manage time. Keep schedules, set goals and time tables, and use a calendar. Meditate. Reflect on your own spiritual truths or on peaceful thoughts. Financial tips for job seekers Losing your job is tough. But in the midst of a recession, rebounding and finding new employment is even harder. While uncertainty and doubt may overwhelm you, job loss can be an opportunity to reevaluate your career, take control of your situation and, most importantly, regain your self-confidence. However, while building a resume and making connections to find a new job are a priority, the first issue most people should address is money. The following checklist from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, a not-for-profit financial services organization, provides some immediate tips to stay financially afloat after a job loss. Draft a survival budget Anticipate that you ll be out of work for at least six months. It s impossible to predict how long your unemployment will last, of course. But you can control what you spend and save. Tips on increasing your cash flow are also available at thrivent. com/jobchange. Make sure you and your dependents have health insurance coverage It may be least expensive to join your spouse s plan, if that s an option. If not, look into COBRA coverage through your former employer. The 2009 economic stimulus package from the federal government requires that a percentage of COBRA premiums be paid by your previous employer for a period of time. Details are available on the U.S. Department of Labor Web site, DOL.gov. Examine credit card debt Contact your credit card company about lowering your interest rate. If you have credit card debt, you may need to make just the minimum payments until you get back to work. If your debt is significant or you are having trouble making even the minimum payments, try to negotiate a payment plan with your creditors. For help managing your debt, learn about Thrivent Financial Bank s Debt Savvy program. File for unemployment benefits You have a right to receive benefits you ve paid for. Rules may vary by state. Maintain your life insurance coverage It may be tempting to save cash over the short-term by canceling your life insurance contract. But if you try to resume coverage on a lapsed contract at a later date, you ll pay more and you may have to prove insurability with a medical exam. Avoid drawing upon retirement funds Resist the urge to dip into retirement savings except as an absolute last resort. Receiving that money now could mean early withdrawal penalties and taxes you hadn t anticipated. Plus, you ll lose the potential earning power of that money for your eventual retirement. You can find additional tips on job interviews, information on job boards and networking, sample resumes and more, including money tips for after you land a job at Thrivent Financial s Web site www. thrivent.com/jobchange. Regaining financial security is a critical part of dealing with job loss, says Laura Dierke, manager of financial education programs for Thrivent Financial. Working in partnership with your family to discuss these money topics can be extremely beneficial. The road to a successful job transition will come with many twists and turns. But taking ownership of the situation, moving forward with confidence and taking advantage of the tools available will help you get back into the job market. Understanding unemployment benefits How and where do I apply? n You may apply on-line at www.in.gov/ dwd/2345, or if you don t have internet access, visit your nearest full service WorkOne Center. n Initial applications must be completed online. You could do this from any internet available location (home, library, school). You don t have to physically go to an office to file. What s required when filing the initial claim? n Your address, social security number, phone number, and the reason you are unemployed. n Last employer s name (company name), mailing address, phone number, and dates of employment. n If you re in a hiring hall union, you ll need to know the good standing date. n If you re laid off and your return to work date has been moved, you ll need to bring in a new letter from the company or fill out a waiver that can be provided from WorkOne. n To get wage history (which is good for three months), you must bring your Social Security card and a valid state issued photo I.D. to the WorkOne. Will I qualify for benefits? n Yes if your base period wages total at least $4,200 in the first four of the last five calendar quarters before you file. And, $2,500 of those wages must have been earned in the third and fourth quarter n Yes if you are unemployed due to no fault of your own. n Yes if you are mentally and physically able, available, and actively seeking full-time employment. What to expect. n You will receive a wage transcript and benefits computation form from the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) within 10 days. n This doesn t mean you qualify for benefits. It s merely a statement that provides you with a weekly benefit amount and an overall maximum benefit amount If you are found eligible. n If there is a problem with your claim, you will receive correspondence from DWD. Problems could include: discharge, quitting or other issues that might affect eligibility. These issues will be investigated and benefits will be put on hold. You will be required to continue to file weekly vouchers. What happens next? n Each week you re not working, file weekly vouchers and provide a weekly update on employment status. n Vouchers can be completed anytime after midnight Saturday up to the following Saturday. n Electronic vouchers are generally processed within two business days and paper vouchers can take up to three weeks to process. n Not completing a voucher properly, or by submitting multiple vouchers, could cause a delay in a payment. n If you report a payment from an employer on the voucher, indicate the type of payment, employer s name, and the gross (before taxes) payment you received. page 12 WorkOne CareerConnect. October/November 2011

When and how will I receive benefits? n It takes up to three weeks from when you are approved to receive a payment, if there are no issues or problems on your claim. n Your benefits are issued through a Visa debit card. All of your payments will be applied to this card/account. n You will receive your Visa debit card approximately 7-10 days after the first payment is credited. Are other resources available for me? n Your local WorkOne and Indiana Career Connect assist job seekers with finding job openings, creating a resume, exploring careers, researching the job market. n Your local WorkOne and Indiana Career Connect will also have education and training information, MindLeaders-online learning and skill development, veteran, and youth services. NOTE: You do not have to qualify for unemployment insurance to use a WorkOne or Indiana Career Connect services. If, however, you are filing for unemployment and you fail to register and complete a resumé on Indiana Career Connect, you will not receive unemployment insurance benefits. What about extended benefits? n You can receive state unemployment benefits for up to 26 weeks and after these benefits have been exhausted, you can file for federal benefits. n You cannot qualify or file for the extended unemployment benefits until your current claim has a zero balance. n After you file for the first extension you will receive a wage transcript and benefits computation. n The weekly benefit amount will not change. n There are three tiers of federal extensions: Tier 1: you could collect for 20 weeks maximum; Tier 2: you could collect for 14 weeks maximum. Following these federal extensions, you are able to collect state extended benefits as well; Tier 3: Hoosiers who complete tier 3 will receive a letter from DWD with instructions on filing for Extended Benefits (EB).
