01 The world in is a much different place than it was in 1934, when our refinery began operating. Who could have anticipated the enormous changes in our nation s culture, economy and technology? Today, people have a different attitude toward industrial producers and corporations. Expectations for accountability, transparency and responsibility are higher than ever and our own expectations for ourselves are even higher. That s why HollyFrontier Cheyenne has been looking toward the future and reflecting on the kind of business we want to be and what kind of relationship we want with the community. We re evolving because we believe there s more at stake than energy production there s also the continued prosperity of our community and our friends and neighbors. We feel fortunate and privileged to have operated in Cheyenne for so long with your support, and we want to keep that going for decades to come. This annual community update is for you. It will tell you more about who we are, what we did this year, and what the future will hold for us. 04 We have a long history here HollyFrontier Cheyenne has deep roots in Wyoming soil. Over the years, we ve been proud to grow and prosper along with our community. As a major contributor to the local economy, the refinery has always been committed to operating ethically, responsibly and safely in this beautiful state. 1934 The Cheyenne refinery is built and begins operation. 1885 The first drilled oil well in Wyoming begins operation near Dallas Dome. 1929 The Great Depression brings the booming oil industry to its knees. The price of oil in Wyoming plummets from $3 per barrel to only 19 cents. 1940-1942 The Frontier Refining Co. is formed and its president M.H. Bud Robineau purchases the refinery. Cheyenne s population grows from 23,000 to 34,000. At this point, the refinery employs 65 workers and distributes its gasoline to 6 states in the region. The U.S. Navy begins 1902 The first gasolinepowered automobile in Cheyenne is purchased by a local physician. 1909 to convert its fleet from coal- to oil-power. The U.S.S. Wyoming is the first ship to be converted.

and our future is just beginning. 05 1970-1980 Oil production peaks nationally and begins to downturn. Unlike many of its competitors, the refinery remains open. 1944 Aviation Fuel for World War II Through the joint effort of refinery owner Bud Robineau and Wyoming Senator Joseph C. O Mahoney, an $8 million, 40-acre facility adjacent to the existing refinery is constructed to produce vital 100-octane aviation fuel for the Army Air Forces as part of the war effort. 2011 Frontier completes a merger of equals with Holly Corporation and changes name to HollyFrontier Corporation. Once in operation, an additional 165 workers are employed permanently and an estimated $328,500 annually is added to the Cheyenne economy today s equivalent would be more than $4 million. More than double the previous amount of crude oil for processing is purchased annually from oil fields in Niobrara and Natrona counties. Over the following decades the refinery s success helps Cheyenne s rapidly growing economy and population.
