Schmitz, BSN, RN Aarn Mre, BSN, RN Mnday, March 31, 2014, 4-5pm Learn hw ne rganizatin addressed the challenge f educating periperative nurse while ptimizing existing resurces. A pilt prgram t cnslidate periperative educatin fr six hspitals was develped in the fall f 2012. The educatin cmpnent (Perip 101) was dne centrally with clinical rtatins t include all six facilities. In an effrt t select the best candidates, several prcesses were instituted, including persnal interviews, prfile assessments, and panel interviews. Respnses t jb pstings yielded 62 interested candidates frm several states, including Alaska. Based n the persnal interviews and prfile assessments, 42 individuals were selected fr face-t face panel interviews. Thirty individuals made the final selectin prcess. A ttal f 22 individuals (17 new graduates and five experienced nurses) started the six-mnth prgram n February 4, 2013. The prgram was a cmbinatin f didactic lectures that included Perip 101, Cine-Med Vides, Subject Matter Expert lectures, and managed clinical experiences. Lessns learned as a result f the pilt and recmmendatins n mdificatins fr future prgrams will be shared. OBJECTIVES: 1. Discuss the ratinale fr develping the prgram. 2. Describe the selectin prcess. 3. Review the prgram structure. 4. Discuss the prgram experience. 5. Review the "lessns learned" frm this experience. SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES: Margaret "Peggy" Camp, MSN, RN, is currently an independent cnsultant and is teaching Perip 101 fr HealthOne in Denver Clrad. She has cnsulted with vendrs t educate them n their interactins with health care rganizatins. Prir t retiring in March 2012, Peggy was the clinical resurce directr fr the cntinental divisin f HCA, a health care cmpany fr 11 years where she was respnsible fr prviding clinical supprt and expertise t the divisin facilities in identifying and implementing supply cst savings initiatives. Prir t jining Supply Chain Services, she was the directr f surgical services at Nrth Suburban Medical Center in Thrntn, Clrad. A periperative nurse fr ver 40 years, Camp has practiced as a staff nurse, manager, and administrative directr in surgical services. She als was a directr fr periperative educatin at AORN. She earned her diplma in nursing frm St. Peter's Hspital in Albany, New Yrk, her BSN frm Metrplitan State Cllege in Denver, Clrad, and her master's in nursing administratin frm the University f Clrad Health Sciences Center in Denver.

Camp has published varius articles n periperative nursing and has been a cntributing authr fr several nursing texts n periperative nursing. Aarn Mre, BSN, RN, is a new periperative nurse. He was accepted int the HealthOne Periperative 101 Pilt Prgram in February 2013. Aarn has been a leader in the class and has cntinued t seek ut the knwledge and skills needed t be a successful periperative nurse. Clinical feedback frm the facilities abut Aarn is that he has quickly grasped the cncepts needed t practice safely as a periperative nurse. Aarn will graduate frm the prgram in August 2013 and will be assigned as a staff nurse in the OR at ne f the HealthOne hspitals. Prir t enrlling in his BSN prgram, Aarn was a river guide in Utah fr fur years. The skills he gained frm this experience have allwed him t quickly adapt these skills int thse needed in the OR. Diana K. Schmitz, BSN, RN, is a new periperative nurses wh started in the HealthOne Perip 101 Pilt Prgram in February 2013. As a participant in the prgram, Diana has been a very engaged and enthusiastic persn and has cntinually sught ut pprtunities t expand her knwledge and skills t allw her t be a successful periperative nurse. Prir t entering the nursing prgram at the University f Michigan, Diana earned a Bachelr f Science in exercise science and wrked as an exercise specialist at Sparrw Hspital in Lansing, Michigan. Diana was n the Dean's list at the University f Michigan and was awarded the Spirit Award in 2012. Diana is an OR staff nurse in a metr Denver HealthOne hspital.
