See Also: Raymond V. Schoder, S.J., Photograph Collection; Felix P. Biestek, S.J., Photograph Collection; Mary Margaret Kelly Photograph Collection; Joseph Smajo Photograph Collection; University Photograph Collection; University Portrait Collection Biographical Sketch Thomas Joseph Leo Dyba was born on 4 October 1934 in Chicago, attended St. Constance Grammar School, and graduated from Cardinal Stritch High School in 1952. He received two degrees from Loyola University of Chicago: a Bachelor of Science in Social Science with a major in Sociology in 1956 and a Master of Education in Guidance and Counseling in 1965. Between 1948 and 1968 he was a professional photographer in private business. Dyba accepted a position in the Admissions Office of Loyola University of Chicago in 1957. Beginning as Assistant to the Dean of Admissions, he was promoted to Assistant Dean of Admissions in 1965 and to Associate Dean of Admissions Counseling in 1967. The following year he accepted the position of Director of Admissions at Illinois Benedictine College where he remained until his death in 1989, becoming Dean of Admissions and Records in 1972, and Executive Vice President in 1974. Dyba's student years at Loyola were very active ones. He was a photographer and photo editor for the student newspaper, Loyola News; a photographer for the student magazine, Cadence; representative to the Student Union; and a member of: the Physics Club which he served as social chairman, the Choral Society which he served as vice-chairman and member of the board of governors, the Blue Key National Honor Society, and Beta Pi Collegiate Journalism Society. As an undergraduate student, Dyba also joined the University Club. He served as its secretary during the 1954-1955 academic year and as President during the critical 1955-1956 academic year when the University Club affiliated with the national social fraternity, Tau Kappa Epsilon, becoming its Epsilon Kappa chapter. His active involvement with TKE did not stop Thomas J. Dyba Photograph Collection, 1950-1963, Undated Page 1

Loyola University Chicago ~ Archives & Special Collections with his graduation. He went on to become founding father, secretary, treasurer, and president of the Epsilon Kappa Chapter Alumni Association; editor and publisher of "The Teke Alum," alumni newspaper; recipient of the Outstanding TKE Alumnus of the Year Award in 1961; recipient of the Outstanding TKE Alumnus of the Decade Award in 1966; and Honorary Chairman of the Tenth Anniversary of Epsilon Kappa Chapter in 1966. On 7 March 1989, Thomas J. Dyba, who was also a scholar of Abraham Lincoln and a resident of Downers Grove, died after a long battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife Lorraine and survived by a son, Thomas A.; two daughters, Lorraine A. Bennett and Catherine Dyba-Tyree; a sister; and six grandchildren. Scope and Content Thomas J. Dyba documented his Loyola years with his camera. When he donated the Thomas J. Dyba Photographic Collection to the Archives in December of 1988, these photographic negatives and prints were its core, providing a rich source for documenting student life in particular and the history of Loyola in general during the 1950s and early 1960s. The collection is made up of 88 prints and contact prints and 1,101 photographic negatives. Of the contact prints 25 were made by the Archives from negatives which were too badly damaged to save. The size of most negatives is 4x5, but some 35mm, 120 film, and an 8x10 will also be found. Any negative numbers, subjects, and dates assigned by Dyba have been preserved. All negative and print numbers beginning with "U-" were assigned in the Archives to cover instances when no Dyba negative/print number was available. All information which is followed by a question mark or placed in brackets has been provided by the Archives staff. For easier reference, the files below are listed in date order which is a slight variation from the negative/print number order in which they are actually filed. Negatives which were numbered by Dyba but have no date are kept in negative/print number order so that they will place approximately by date. Undated negatives and prints which were not numbered by Dyba are placed at the end. Please note that the total number of negatives and prints assigned to each negative/print number is placed in parentheses or brackets after the subject. Unless noted to the contrary, all such numbers refer to negatives.
