UC San Diego Eligibility: Open to Registered Undergraduate and Graduate/Professional Level Students Deadline to submit: May 20, 2016 Submit a PDF by email to: scholarships@ucsd.edu The overarching goal of the UC Global Food Initiative is to harness the resources of the University of California - its research, people, expertise, and tradition of public service - to put the world on a pathway to feed itself in ways that are nutritious and sustainable. The President s Global Food Initiative Student Fellowship Program was created to engage students in this critical effort. UC San Diego will be awarding four $4,000 fellowships/internships to support the research activity related to the UC Global Food Initiative. The award is for the 2016-17 academic year and is available to registered UCSD students. Financial need is not a requirement. Funds will be disbursed quarterly (1/3 of $4,000). Recipients of this award will work in collaboration with Dr. Keith Pezzoli, Department of Communication and Director of Urban Studies and Planning, who is leading UC San Diego s research for this initiative. There are opportunities for the three student recipients to be engaged in various aspects of this research. Depending upon the aspect of the research, the recipient may have access to computational resources (computer and computing facility resources), a desk, and lab or field instrumentation and work space and will receive training in related techniques, applications and equipment. Some field work may take place off campus in the San Diego area. All recipients are also expected to participate at a UC Systemwide symposium in Fall 2016 to bring GFI Fellows together to share project ideas, develop collaborations and introduce student engagement campus representatives. There may be additional opportunities for collaboration and showcasing of GFI Fellows throughout the academic year. All recipients are expected to be in good academic standing and remain registered students during the award period. Recipients selected are expected to begin research Fall 2016. Undergraduate research interns will be expected to spend approximately 8 hours a week during the instruction period each quarter, with work being concluded by the end of spring quarter instruction. There is no academic credit associated with this award. Graduate fellows will be expected to conduct research on topics related to UC San Diego s Global Food Initiative Project and collaborate and connect with Dr. Keith Pezzoli. All recipients are expected to make a commitment of sufficient time in order to complete the fellowship/internship under Dr Keith Pezzoli s direction. Depending upon the aspect of research, other UCSD faculty members may also provide direction. In addition, a student engagement campus representative will be selected among the 4 selected fellows to lead student engagement and communication efforts for the Global Food Initiative. The student engagement campus representative will be expected to share their student voice, report on student engagement activities, and connect with GFI working group leaders from all 10 campuses. The student engagement campus representative will receive an additional $1,000 towards their GFI award, $5,000 total. To apply for the fellowship/internship, please complete this form, save it as a PDF (use the following naming convention: lastname_firstname_ globalfood_2016.pdf), and email it to scholarships@ucsd.edu. Applicants should expect to receive an email confirming receipt of your application. You will be contacted again only if you are being considered for selection for this program. Please direct questions to scholarships@ucsd.edu. Page 1 of 6

Appendix 1 URBAN AGRICULTURE AND FOOD DISPARITIES. A RESEARCH PROJECT OF THE UC GLOBAL FOOD INITIATIVE. 2016-2017, UC SAN DIEGO RESEARCH AGENDA Critically analyze and evaluate urban agriculture (including community gardens, urban farms, food forests, aquaculture, and animal husbandry) in low income and under-- served neighborhoods. Do so from diverse conceptual perspectives, including biological, geographic, spatial, energetic, ecological, economic, socio-- cultural, health, legal-- institutional and political. Contribute to sustainability science and bioregional theory. Explain root causes of food disparities while opening new frontiers in transdisciplinary research and knowledge networking focused on coupled natural-- human systems, social innovation, communication, learning, and the democratization of science and technology. ACTION AGENDA Establish a comparative, multicampus research program within the UC system dedicated to critically examining urban agriculture s potential to increase food security and food justice. Critique conditions that are reproducing food disparities locally and globally while drawing attention (in academic, public policy and planning arenas) to alternatives that diminish food disparities. Build trusted community-- university relationships that are culturally sensitive, participatory, authentically reciprocal and attuned to how race, class, gender, ethnicity and power interact in food systems. Create educational and training curriculum in support of sustainable food systems planning and design. The Research Project s Aims (Outcomes to be met through Science-- based Programs) 1. Community Gardens, Food Hub Network and Food Forests in Southeast San Diego and City Heights strengthened (more people involved, more land under cultivation, food disparities diminished) 2. Edible Plant Sampling and Analysis Program established (residents and community organizations gain access to UC science; enabling them to deal with concerns about growing fruits and vegetables on land including brownfield sites that may be contaminated). 3. Bioretention and Natural Treatment Systems program set up in beta mode (ecological research conducted in SESD s community gardens and food forests provides useful field data; the findings help us understand how certain vegetation-- soil-- invertebrate interactions potentially enhance water quality and improve the function of natural treatment systems/ green infrastructure). 4. GIS-- based decision support tool for scenario planning (city, researchers, developers, community organizations gain analytical and mapping capability to embed urban agriculture in the context of greening infrastructure/stormwater management). 5. Informality and Food District Economics scoping project launched (initiate field work and research to examine/support local micro entrepreneurship in the food sector).
