LCS News Update (April 18-April 21) Courage to Stand This one-day workshop hosted 11 high schools in the region in partnership with Greater Sudbury Police Service and the Chief s Youth Advisory Council in order to help students gain the confidence and leadership skills to stand up to bullying and discrimination. The day focused on building communication skills and defining success as well as building relationships. The students heard from fellow teens and teachers with initiatives and experiences in helping those struggling to fit in. They participated in activities like building bracelets containing inspiring messages, kickboxing fitness, group discussions, and creating success posters. We also had our very own Lauren-Ashleigh Beaudry as a guest speaker. Me to We On Wednesday afternoon of this week, members of the "Me to We" group got together to cut out shoe patterns from all the jeans that were generously donated. These patterns will be packaged and sent to Uganda to create much-needed shoes in order to help prevent many foot-related diseases. If you would like more information on this initiative, please visit "solehope.org".

Teachers have reviewed the school list of self-identified Native ancestry students and the nomination categories. Nominated students will receive their invitations to the event next week. Grade 12s - Reminder Tuesday, April 25th - Guidance will be submitting mid-term academic results to Ontario universities and colleges. Students are asked to double-check their academic submissions to ensure all of the details are accurate. If there are any concerns, students are advised to see their Guidance counsellor promptly. Thursday, May 4th - Period 2, Grade 12s will meet in the balcony to nominate three candidates for Valedictorian. Voting will follow with the winner being decided later in the week. Wednesday, May 10th - Teachers will meet after school to select award winners that will be recognized at Commencement. Due to the fact that several awards are linked to community service hours, students are asked to have any outstanding hours submitted to Guidance by April 29th, 2017 to ensure a fair assessment for all. Volunteering Change the World We are currently in a challenge with high schools throughout Ontario to win Change the World. The high school with the most community services hours between April 10th and May 23, 2017 will win the provincial title. Grade 11 Tech Design students are helping patients at St. Joseph Continuing Care recover! Mr. Coulas' Grade 11 Tech Design class has been involved in designing and building meaningful activities for the patients at St. Joseph's Continuing Care facility. Students developed their own designs for a nestbox/bird feeder using 3D modeling software and later constructed their design using their woodworking skills in the shop. Each design is finally disassembled and put into a package with directions developed by the students for patients at St. Joseph's Continuing Care. The patients assemble the project of their choice and finish them with some paint so that they can be sold at a silent auction. Proceeds from the auction are used to purchase amenities for the patients. The patients received 16 different designs to choose from this year!

Grade 10 Tech Custom Shelves Proudly on Display From their homes, Grade 10 students are sending in pictures of the mounted shelves they made in tech class. The shelf project had a series of design constraints that had to be met, but students were given freedom to design the side brackets the way they liked. All of the designs were unique and varied in complexity and all of them were skillfully crafted. All shelves were created from rough pine. Students milled the wood to a 3/4" thickness using a variety of stationary power tools and the top pieces were laminated from three individual boards. Some examples of the impressive results are on the next page.

Our STEAM room offers students a place to explore, build, and display their work. Tools and technologies are available here that are not found in a traditional classroom. In the coming weeks, students will be visiting the STEAM room to work on their culminating activities in STEP classes. The room is open for individuals and groups period 1,3, and 4 every day in May and June. STEAM FOCUS Josh is a Lockerby graduate and local entrepreneur who is starting a small business to manufacture custom guitars. He was looking for a location and some camera equipment to shoot a promotional video. Naturally, he thought of Lockerby. In the STEAM room, Josh was able to use lighting, backdrops, props, and recording software to shoot his video using a DSLR camera. Lockerby's mission is to help past and

current students discover their passions by providing the tools and technologies they need to get the job done. Grade 9 Tech Paddlemania continues, and we are engaged in the final shaping and sanding of our wooden paddles. This week we're learning how to use our fingers rather than our eyes to feel for roundness, smoothness, and symmetry. AJ stopped working just long enough to enjoy the accidental art he had created in the shavings. Grade 11 English This week, students in Mrs. Rodriguez s class came back from the Easter weekend to do an analysis presentation on William Shakespeare s Macbeth. The topics presented include a character analysis of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, a comparison of Joseph Campbell s monomyth cycle and Macbeth s heroic journey and comparisons between themes present in Macbeth to today s world. The themes examined are irony, appearance vs. reality, power and ambition, and the paradoxical nature of humans. The last presentation was a Shakespearean web quest on the elements of Shakespearean tragedy. Overall, the students had fun as it involved costumes, props, dramatic readings from the play and food.

This Week in Athletics Congrats to the Senior boys soccer team who defeated Confederation to win their season opener. The Junior boys also defeated Confederation in their 2 p.m. opening match at James Jerome. Track and field practices will be hosted at Laurentian University Track next week. See Ms. Stanyon or Ms. Augenstein for details. New members are welcome. What Parents/Guardians Need to Know for Next Week Dan Watson, our social worker, is in the school on Monday.
