Vol.No.54. No.29 FOR PRIVATE CIRCULATION ONLY JANUARY 16, 2017 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. James 1:4 Electrical Department's green initiative for CMC Special Prayers : January 15-21, 2017 Accounts: Mr.Robby Pria Sundersingh and Staff Internal Audit: Mr. Francis A. and Staff Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church Council Members: Dr. Lalitha F. Chikkala Mr. K. Moses Arnold Kollabathula Hospital: Baer Christian Hospital, Chirala and others Arcot Lutheran Church Council Member: Rt. Rev. Raja Socrates G. S Atop the ASHA building olar photovoltaic (PV) systems are renewable energy systems which use PV modules to convert sunlight into electricity. The electricity thus generated can be stored in batteries, used directly or fed back into a grid line. The Solar PV system is a reliable and clean source of electricity that can suit a wide range of applications such as residence, industry, agriculture, commercial use and so on. Solar power is non-polluting and its usage does not emit any greenhouse gases or harmful waste; it requires very little maintenance and lasts for many years. At the CMC Hospital campus in Vellore, the power demand on weekdays is from 9 am to 4 pm and from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. Daniel Ezhilarasu Australian Board of Vellore CMC Council Member: Dr. Bella George Sunday Services : January 22, 2017 6.00 pm : Scudder Auditorium AHS Baccalaureate Service 6.30 pm : Hospital Chapel Dr. Barney Issac Milestones: CMC opens Breastmilk Bank I n spite of the great demand for breast milk, especially for feeding preterm infants, there are only a handful of breast milk banks in India. Christian Medical College has probably the first human milk bank in the private sector in Tamil Nadu. This has been a long felt need in the department and has finally come to fruition owing to the concerted effort and support of many doctors and nurses of the department. The Breast Milk Bank was dedicated in the Department of Neonatology on 12 th January, 2017, in a ceremony. Continued on Page 2 1

Elec trical Depart ment's green initiative for CMC Continued from Page 1 The Solar PV, installed by the Electrical Department, has reduced this demand and thereby the electricity bill, while diminishing CMC's carbon footprint as well. Before a Solar PV system is installed, a site analysis is carried out, where factors such as shadow-free rooftop availability or free ground space are taken into consideration. Eight Solar power plants have been installed at hospital campus by the Electrical Department, totalling 214 KW. The first Solar PV power plant on campus was installed on the OPD roof top in July 2013 at a capacity of 50 KW. The total energy generated upto December 2016 On the terrace of the Student Nurses' Hostel was 6,58,182 units, saving a sum of Rs.50.41 lakhs on energy bills. Rooftops of Wards Solar Thermal Concentrator Another renewable energy system is the Solar thermal concentrator, which converts sunlight into heat. At CMC, a Solar thermal concentrator has been installed on the roof top of the Engineering Services Building and is used to preheat the boiler feed water so as to reduce the furnace oil consumption. This was installed in March 2014, and has since helped save 16,467 litres of furnace oil as of December 2016, which translates to Rs.7.25 lakhs saved on furnace oil purchase. Milestones: CMC opens Breast milk Bank Continued from Page 1 A word of prayer by Rev. Deborah, Chaplaincy Department, opened the programme, following which Dr. Sridhar, Professor and Head, Department of Neonatology, welcomed the gathering. The Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy inaugurated the facility in the presence of Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent and Dr. Ebor Jacob, Deputy Medical Superintendent, who extended felicitations. The occasion was graced by doctors and nurses of the Department of Neonatology and Maternity Nursing among others. It is hoped that this service will be of immense benefit to newborn babies born in the hospital and the service is expected to be extended to CMC s secondary hospital in the future. The Department of Dietetics celebrated Indian Dietetics Day on 10th January, 2017 by organising a Nutrition Exhibition. The theme chosen this year was Consult a Dietitian and get Food-educated. Ms. Mahendri, Head, Department of Dietetics addressed the gathering and spelled out the objective of celebrating Indian Dietetics Day and importance of good nutrition. Dr. C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent and Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent offered felicitations. Registered Dietitians are one's most credible source of nutritional information. A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a food and nutrition expert who has met academic and professional requirements and would have completed an accredited, supervised, experiential practice programme at a health-care facility and cleared a national examination administered by the IDA-RD (Indian Dietetic Association Registration Board) Board on Dietetic Registration. Continued on Page 3 Department of Dietetics celebrates Indian Dietetics Day 2

Department of Dietetics celebrates Indian Dietetics Day Continued from Page 2 CMC's Dietary Department was the first in south India to have a qualified dietitian in 1950 when the Department of Dietetics was established. Innovative variations in traditional south Indian recipes such as idli, dosa and so on, using millets kept for display attracted the attention of large number of patients, children, parents and the general public. Emphasis was on diversification of diet and incorporating different food groups. To prevent food waste, watermelon rind dosa as well as use of leftover rice, roti, dal were introduced. Dishes from other ethnicities were also displayed such as Assamese Peta (similar to neer dosa of Karnataka) Urad Dal Ladoo (Sunnundallu) of Andhra, Bihari Phara (dal Kolakattai) Halubai (riceflour halwa), Ellu sankranthi (pongal) mix recipe from Karnataka, Poha Modak (Aval Kolakattai)Oriya, Punjabi -Dal Pinni (Urad dal sweet) were proof of Indian gastronomical diversity. The recipe information was helpful for the visitors who eagerly captured the display on their mobile phones. The exhibition also had information and displays on balanced diet for all age groups. Tips on packed meals and food safety were also on display. Educational pamphlets were distributed to visitors. As Global Pulse Day will be held on 18th January, 2017, a stall dedicated dishes made from different pulses and legumes were set up, projecting their importance in human nutrition. Visitors were encouraged to include pulses in their diet and pledge to prevent food waste. Campus Life: CMC hosts an evening of tuneful worship On 7th January, 2017 the Christian Medical College, Vellore welcomed two choirs to the Ida Scudder Auditorium for a melodic evening titled Musical Mosaic. The Handel Manuel Chorus and the Coimbatore Chamber Chorale were joined by local musicians, all coming together to raise funds towards the CMC Emergency Fund for the treatment of financially disadvantaged patients. The Handel Manuel Chorus from Chennai, is an accomplished choir of experienced singers, conducted by Sharada Schaffter. She co-founded the choir in 2003, to honour and carry forward the legacy of the well-known conductor Handel Manuel. This choir specialises in classical church music and has been a regular visitor to Vellore over the past few years. Their most recent visit was in March 2016 for Hymn of Praise. The Coimbatore Chamber Chorale is conducted by Faith Ragland, an alumnus of CMC, who initiated the Chorale in 2011. It has around 40 members of all ages, who come together to enjoy singing, and to share their love of beautiful music with others. The evening began with both choirs on stage, singing Mozart s stately Coronation Mass. The choirs blended perfectly under the baton of Sharada Schaffter, the clear voices of the soloists emerging distinctly and contrasting with the uplifting power of the chorus. Continued on Page 4 Both choirs were accompanied on the piano by the talented Dhruva Seshadri, who lives and works in Chennai but has deep roots in Vellore his parents were both professors at CMC. 3

Campus Life: CMC hosts an evening of tuneful worship Continued from Page 3 The Handel Manuel Chorus then sang further sacred works from Bach, including solos by their impressive bass Naveen Narendrenath and soprano Sonaly Kutty Francis. Local musicians Sujith Chandy, Pratap Mathews, and Dhruva Seshadri complemented the choral works with instrumentals on the piano and recorder. In the latter half of the programme, the Coimbatore Chamber Chorale delighted the audience with fresh and lively renditions of more contemporary works such as The Storm is Passing Over by Charles Tindley, and The Prayer (Sager and Foster). They sang their signature Tamil lyric, Potruvaen Theivanayae, written by CMC alumnus, Theodore Dhingaran and his father David. Earl Joseph and Faith Ragland from Coimbatore delivered a violin solo and duet and Dhruva Seshadri showed his mastery of the piano with the challenging Prelude by Rachmaninov (Op. 23). Finally, the choirs came together again, with additional musicians, to sing Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me, by Miller and Jackson, echoing the closing line from the Mass, dona nobis pacem and the plea of many hearts in an increasingly uncertain world. The audience expressed their appreciation to all the musicians, both for their beautiful music and also for their dedicated efforts to help destitute patients at the hospital.
