Milestones 1985: Graduate School of Nursing established. Kathleen Dirschel, PhD, RN appointed first Dean. 1986: First class of 30 student s matriculates. Initial Master s degree specialties: Ambulatory Clinical Nurse Specialist; Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist; Nurse Administrator. 1987: First 13 students graduate. 1989: GSN granted National League for Nursing (NLN) 8-year accreditation. 1990: HIV Subspecialty funded by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). 1991: Lillian R. Goodman, EdD, RN named interim Dean. 1994: GSN awarded management of the Worcester State College Student Health Center. First PhD Program in Nursing in UMass system, a Collaborative program of Amherst and Worcester campuses, is established and first students admitted. Cardiac Nursing subspecialty, funded by Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

1995: Lillian R. Goodman, EdD, RN appointed Dean. First in New England Adult Acute/Critical Care Nurse Practitioner/Clinical Specialist specialty established. Geriatric Subspecialty established in collaboration with Fallon Elder Care established. 1997: National League for Nursing grants accreditation for eight years. First five PhD students graduate from collaborative nursing program with UMass Amherst. Cancer Prevention and Control Education program (COPACE) subspecialty initiated. 1999: Dean Goodman retires; becomes Dean and Professor, Emeriti, chair. Correctional/Institutional nursing subspecialty was established. 2000: Doreen C. Harper, PhD, RN, FAAN appointed Dean. 2001: Advanced Practice Nurse Educator Specialty established. Worcester Nursing Pipeline Consortium established. Nurse Practitioner Council, a partnership with the clinical system established.

2002: Adult Nurse Practitioner/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner; and Acute Critical Care Nurse Practitioner/ Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, dual track specialties, funded by HRSA. 2003: First Graduate Entry Pathway (GEP) Program in UMass system established. 2004: First GEP class accepted with program located on UMMS South Street Campus 2005: Paulette Seymour-Route, PhD, RN named interim Dean Independent PhD program established Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accreditation awarded to the GSN Master s Program. First required interprofessional course Population Health Clerkship for first year medical students and GEP II students established. 2006: Paulette Seymour-Route, PhD, RN appointed Dean 2007: First GEP class graduates 47 students. 2008: Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) Program approved and first DNP class accepted. BSN to PhD pathway established First BS to PhD student was accepted.

2009: Genetics Subspecialty established. 2010: CCNE accreditation granted to the Master s and DNP Programs. DNP Program graduates first class. 2011: Interprofessional education collaboration expands with the GSN Nursing students and UMass Medical Students to achieve the Interprofessional Education Competencies (IPEC). 2012: GSN establishes Genetics and Genomics Curriculum for advanced practice and doctoral students 2013: State-of-the-Art Albert Sherman Center (ASC) opens. Standardized patient program & Simulation labs move to ASC and to the Interprofessional Center for Experiential Learning & Simulation (icels). GEP Program moves from South Street to ASC building on main campus. Gerontology incorporated into both Adult Nurse Practitioner tracks. 2014: GSN learning community opens in ASC building. 2015: UMass Worcester GSN is awarded a full ten year accreditation of our DNP and Post Master s Certificate

Programs by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Dean Paulette Seymour Route PhD, RN awarded the Chancellor s Medal by UMMS Chancellor, Dr. Michael Collins at Commencement. Dean Paulette Seymour Route retires Joan Vitello-Cicciu PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAHA, FAAN appointed Dean. 2016: Paulette Seymour Route PhD, RN becomes Dean Emeritus. DNP established for Advanced Practice as entry level for Advanced Practice Programs. PhD Program External Review conducted. Opiod and Safe Prescribing Training Program (OSTI) curriculum established. 2017: GSN Continuing Education established. Associate Dean of Research & Innovation established. First Annual GSN Reunion established in partnership with SOM Alumni Weekend.
