Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program

The Program BC Children s Hospital offers a 2 year fellowship training program in Pediatric Emergency Medicine to qualified applicants who are interested in learning in a fun, supportive and enriching environment. We aim to attract and develop highly motivated, intelligent, and exceptional fellows who will become leaders in the field of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. BC Children s Hospital is situated in beautiful Vancouver, Canada, one of the most vibrant and active cities in the world. Known for its stunning scenery and landscape, Vancouver provides the perfect backdrop for fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine. The hospital is the tertiary care pediatric referral facility for the province of British Columbia and the Yukon Territory and offers the whole spectrum of subspecialty services including a pediatric intensive care unit and a specialized pediatric transport service. It is also a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma centre. The emergency room cares for a variety of pediatric complaints, seeing over 45,000 children per year. Our fellowship program accepts applications from residents in Canadian training programs (pediatrics and emergency medicine) through CaRMS (http://www.carms.ca), as well as international applicants who have completed their pediatric residency training (applications should be sent directly to the program). For further enquiries and application submission, please contact our program assistant Ms. Rhea Ignacio (Rhea.Ignacio@cw.bc.ca) or program director Dr. Vikram Sabhaney (vsabhaney@cw.bc.ca).

The Curriculum This fully accredited program offers a curriculum, which meets and often exceeds Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada standards. Year 1 Year 2 Pediatric EM 7 Pediatric EM 6 Orthopedics 1 Radiology 0.5 NERD 1 1 Pre-Hospital Care 1 Adult EM 1 PICU 1 Plastic Surgery 1 Toxicology 1 Pediatric Anaesthesia 1 Research 1 Elective 1 Trauma 1 Administration 2 0.5 Elective 1.5 1 Novel Education in Research and Design 2 Administration block longitudinal over 2 year fellowship The curriculum is designed to meet the Royal College standards, but allows fellows to pursue areas of passion and interest. Well-established selectives available to fellows include sports medicine, adolescent medicine, child protection, and point of care ultrasound. In addition, the program is very supportive of fellows pursuing unique experiences, which has resulted in endeavors such as electives in leadership development and international health.

Emergency Department The emergency department at BC Children s Hospital is a dynamic and busy environment. Fellows in the department have graded responsibility, and by the end of their training, are provided with the autonomy to run the department independently. Fellows are never on shift with each other or other senior learners, in order to maximize learning opportunities. Emergency physicians lead all trauma and medical resuscitations, so plenty of opportunities exist to develop acute care skills! As of October 2017, we will be moving into a new state-of-theart emergency department! Academic Days Academic days occur on a weekly basis. Our educational curriculum has been carefully designed to cover all aspects of emergency medicine, while providing our fellows with the opportunity to both learn and teach in a supportive academic environment. Fellows are protected during this time from all clinical responsibilities to maximize learning. Our curriculum consists of: Core curriculum lectures Patient safety and quality improvement modules Disaster and mass casualty training Critical appraisal/journal club Procedural skills training And much, much more In addition to academic days, fellows participate in our monthly Pediatric Emergency Medicine Division rounds. These consist of radiology teaching, exposure to the most cutting-edge pediatric emergency topics, and operations meetings.

NERD 2014 Research Our program provides outstanding opportunities for clinical and educational research. Our research director, Dr. Ran Goldman, supports our fellows to identify an area of interest and a mentor very early in their training. Our division has many accomplished research mentors, who will help ensure that the project reaches fruition. During the first part of the fellowship, all of our trainees attend the NERD block, which is a unique course developed in partnership between the department of emergency medicine and the division of pediatric emergency medicine (http://emergency.med.ubc.ca/research/education). This intense 4- week course prepares our fellows to maximize their research experience. Furthermore, our fellows are able to access a wealth of research support and resources through the onsite Child and Family Research Institute. As a result, our former fellows have published successfully in numerous journals, including Pediatrics, Journal of Pediatrics, and Pediatric Emergency Care.

Simulation The training offered through our fellowship program includes a comprehensive Pediatric Simulation Curriculum, which is run longitudinally throughout the 2 years of fellowship. This curriculum uses state of the art simulation technology to teach resuscitation, teamwork and communication skills. It provides our fellows the chance to be the leader in simulated resuscitations, while working in a team environment with nursing staff, respiratory therapists and other residents. Training in this setting ensures that fellows graduating from our program are confident leaders and communicators when managing future resuscitation cases. To learn more about our simulation centre, please visit https://cme.bccher.ca/simulation/. Teaching Our fellows have many opportunities to hone their skills as educators. Trainees are supported to attend formal courses through UBC, including the ABC Primer

series and the Residents as Teachers program. Other opportunities include teaching junior learners on shift, lecturing during PEM academic days, and supervising OSCEs and simulation sessions for pediatric residents. For those who would like to pursue a career in medical education, UBC is home to the Centre for Health Education Scholarship (http://ches.med.ubc.ca). The Team Pediatric Emergency Research Canada 2015 Pediatric emergency medicine trained physicians, who are committed to the fellowship program and are supportive of its educational endeavors, staff the emergency department at BC Children s Hospital. Dear candidates, we would like to thank you for your interest in our program. We look forward to meeting you and introducing you to our program and wonderful faculty. We wish you all the best in the upcoming match! Dr. Vikram Sabhaney, Program Director Dr. Garth Meckler, Division Head Dr. Ran Goldman, Research Director Dr. Badri Narayan, Education Lead Ms. Rhea Ignacio, Program Assistant

Vancouver, British Columbia Vancouver is a vibrant, exciting city to live in. Regardless of whether you enjoy outdoor sports, yoga, good food, shopping, or just spending a day at the beach, Vancouver has it all. Your friends and family will be jealous! The world famous ski slopes at Whistler are 1.5 hours from Vancouver. However, there are many fantastic local hills that are just minutes from your backyard. Other winter activities include snowshoeing and ice hockey (BC Children s Hospital has their own hockey team). In the summertime, locals can be found hiking, kayaking, sailing, playing beach volleyball or soccer, and running outdoors. Vancouver is famous for its beautiful surroundings. Whether you like mountains, oceanfront or beaches, there are many ways to spend an afternoon. Whether you are looking for good cheap sushi, or want to try some of the best cuisine in Canada, Vancouver is a foodie s paradise. There is no shortage of coffee either. Beyond finding a Starbucks on every corner (sometimes two on the same corner), there are many great local coffee shops to spend a few hours at.
