Horizon 2020 funds from research to (all forms of) innovation Excellent Science Industrial Leadership Societal Challenges
Horizon 2020 follows a challenge based approach Focus on societal challenges facing EU society, e.g. health, clean energy and transport Focus to support growth and competitiveness Allowing applicants to have considerable freedom to come up with innovative solutions Strong emphasis on expected impact (less prescriptive, broader topics) 4

Horizon 2020 contributes 100% of your direct costs (in most cases) Direct actual costs liked to the project (personnel, equipment, travel/subsistence, other costs) are eligible costs A flat rate of 25% of direct costs contributes to the indirect costs (non productive personnel costs, rent, heating, etc.) Usually 100% of the eligible costs are reimbursed, only for innovation activities the funding rate is 70% 11
Three criteria are used to evaluate Criteria Excellence Impact the proposals Quality and efficiency of the implementation For proposals for ERC frontier research: sole criterion of excellence Proposals ranked according to evaluation results - selection on the basis of this ranking
Openness: Horizon 2020 is open to international cooperation Horizon 2020 open to participation from across the world Some programmes have strong international dimensions ERC open to researchers from all over the world - research to be carried out mostly in Member States or Associated Countries Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowships (e.g. incoming / outgoing) Development of global research infrastructures 13
Strategy defines different type of countries Industrialised countries and emerging economies Focus on competitiveness Tackle global challenges Business opportunities and access to new markets Enlargement and neighbourhood countries, and EFTA Focus on alignment with the ERA Support enlargement and neighbourhood policies (support to developing a common 'Knowledge and Innovation Space') Developing countries Ukraine Support development policy by building partnerships contributing to sustainable development Address relevant challenges (e.g. poverty-related diseases, energy and food security, biodiversity)
Horizon 2020 is open to fund Ukrainian participants Restricted list of countries whose entities are eligible for automatic funding from Union budget Among them Ukraine 15
