COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course focuses on common, well-defined nursing diagnoses through application of the nursing process and integration of scientific concepts. Clinical emphasis is placed on increasing manual dexterity and scientific rationale. CORE CURRICULUM: DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS: Not applicable Required for PN and ADN curricula. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: EVALUATION: NURS 180 uses audio-visual materials with lecture or discussion, selected readings, case study, computer aided instruction, written assignments, base groups, and demonstration. Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by obtaining a final minimum grade of seventy-eight (78.0%), as measured by teacher made examinations. NOTICE: EVALUATION Representative student work will be used as a part of SMC s on-going curriculum assessment program. All assignments are mandatory. All assignments must be

Progression in the nursing program without interruption is determined academically by achieving a minimal grade of "C" (78.0%). ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory. See the School of Nursing Student Handbook for specific guidelines. TESTING POLICY: OTHER COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Students are expected to take all examinations as they are scheduled. Make-up policy with regard to examinations is described in the School of Nursing Student Handbook. The student is expected to have read the material to be covered in class PRIOR to class. Examinations will cover material from lecture, discussion, case studies, and selected readings. Therefore, the student is expected to study these sources of material thoroughly. TERMINAL OBJECTIVES: 1. Provides direct care, based on the nursing process, for clients with common well-defined nursing diagnoses, within a structured health care setting, under the supervision of an experienced registered nurse, doctor or dentist. 2. Utilizes basic therapeutic communication skills when interacting with clients, families and other health care team members along the continuum of care. 3. Implements and modifies standard teaching plans for clients under the supervision of a registered nurse. 4. Organizes basic aspects of care for clients with common health needs within structured health care settings. 5. Demonstrates responsibility and accountability to the profession of nursing as well as utilizing nursing research findings. 3

NURSING 180 NURSING CARE OF ADULTS I COURSE OBJECTIVES At the completion of the course, the learner will meet the following objectives in the areas of body defenses, fluid and electrolyte balance, acid-base balance; perioperative nursing; also related to the following systems: respiratory, gastro-intestinal, biliary, genito-urinary, musculoskeletal, and reproductive. 1. Use critical thinking skills in implementing the nursing process. 2. Participate in collecting a nursing history based on subjective and objective data. 3. Identify basic health care needs/stressors according to nursing assessment. 4. Assist in selecting nursing diagnoses from an established list based on identified health care needs/stressors for the individual client. 5. Assist in prioritizing nursing diagnoses for the individual client that reflect biopsychosocial needs. 6. Assist with identifying goals for the individual client according to the selected nursing diagnoses with attention to their level of growth and development. 7. Assist with identifying outcome criteria specific to each goal to promote adaptation. 8. Identify nursing interventions for an individual client's plan of care to meet human needs. 9. Utilize knowledge from nursing and liberal arts and science courses when contributing to an individual plan of care. 10. Verbalize understanding of the medical plan of care based on scientific knowledge to promote an integrated plan of care. 11. Recognize the client's response and adaptation to plan of care based on established nursing interventions and outcome criteria. 12.. Verbalize an understanding of normal anatomy and physiology and the pathophysiological changes that occur in the disease process. 4

NURSING 180 NURSING CARE OF ADULTS I - THEORY COURSE OUTLINE Nursing diagnosis, goals, plan of care, and interventions will be provided per unit. The specific information will be given relating to each problem. The nursing plan of care will stress the concept of adaptation. The nursing plan of care and medical plan of care have been separated to emphasize the difference between the two concepts.
