Page 9: Use of animals in research The Academy of Medical Sciences, British Academy, Royal Academy of Engineering and the Royal Society are committed to supporting the development of alternative methods to reduce and/or replace the use of animals in research. Applicants proposing to use animals in their research must ensure that the use of animals falls within the regulations stipulated in the UK Animals (Scientific Procedures Act) 1986 and subsequent amendments. Additionally, applicants should continually be aware of developments in best practice, and adopt the principles of the 3Rs when designing and conducting experiments on animals. As funders of research, the Scheme partners take their responsibilities towards the UK Animals (Scientific Procedures Act) 1986 seriously, and requires applicants to consider the questions below when preparing grant applications that include the use of animals. Failure to meet the conditions of the nc3rs review would result in the application being rejected. Does your proposal involve the use of animals or animal tissue? Select Yes or No. If you have selected Yes it is mandatory to complete all of the relevant questions on the Use of Animals in Research page. Yes No Does your research involve any of the following animal types? Cats Dogs Equines Non-human primates Pigs None of the above Does your proposal include procedures to be carried out on animals in the UK under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act? Yes No

If yes, do you have the necessary approvals given by the Home Office? Yes No Not required Does your proposal involve the use of animals or animal tissues outside of the UK? Yes No If yes, are the appropriate national and institutional approvals in place? Please provide details. If your project involves the use of animals, what would be the severity of the procedures? Mild Moderate Severe Non-recovery If applicable, please provide details of any moderate or severe procedures

Why is animal use necessary; are there any other possible approaches that could provide equally valuable results? Please justify the species and number of animals involved. If your proposed research uses cats, dogs, pigs and/or equines, you must also answer the following: From where will the animals be sourced? Name the supplier and give their location. Will it be necessary to transport the animals? If so, indicate approximate journey times and the measure that will be taken to minimise the potential stress during transport. Where animals are to be imported, what journey times have been agreed with the Home Office? Describe the conditions for the animals at the breeding establishment and how the potential stress during transport will be minimised.

Please provide details of the housing for the animals, e.g. enclosure size, space allocation per animal environmental enrichment provided. Will single housing of the animals be necessary at any time? If so, please provide details in terms of the justification for single housing, its duration, and what additional resources will be provided to the animals to minimise the impact of the single housing. Describe the experimental procedures involved and the steps that will be taken to minimise any pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm. When were the procedures last reviewed by the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB) or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)? Will any of the experimental procedures involve restraint? What alternatives have been considered? Describe the nature of the restraint, its duration and frequency, and what will be done to avoid distress? What is to be the fate of the animals at the end of the study? What prior experience and training in the use of the particular animal, care and welfare do those conducting the research have? What provision is made for continuing professional development in these areas?

Will any of the staff involved require specific training for any of the procedures concerned? Please provide details of the training needed and where it will be undertaken. If your proposed research uses non-human primates, you must also answer the following: Do the facilities and practices and the proposed research comply with the principles set out in the NC3Rs Guidelines 'Primate accommodation, care and use'? If not, please explain where not and why. From where will the non-human primates be sourced? Name the supplier and give their location. Please provide details of the housing for the animals, e.g. enclosure size, space allocation per animal, and the environmental enrichment provided. Will single housing of the non-human primates be necessary at any time? If so, please provide details in terms of the justification for single housing, its duration, and what additional resources will be provided to the animals to minimise the impact on animal welfare.

Will any of the experimental procedures involve food and/or water control? If so, justify why this is necessary and outline what alternatives have been considered. For neuroscience studies, please confirm the NC3Rs recommendations on refining food/fluid control will be met. If not, please explain where not and why. Will any of the experimental procedures involve restraint? What alternatives have been considered? Describe the nature of the restraint, its duration and frequency, and what will be done to avoid distress? What prior experience and training in the use of the particular animal, care and welfare do those conducting the research have? What provision is made for continuing professional development in these areas? Will any of the staff involved require specific training for any of the procedures concerned? Please provide details of the training needed and where it will be undertaken.

Field Research - collection of specimens When collection of specimens and other materials is to be made, (a) has specific permission been obtained from the host country to collect and to export specimens and material (b) has the director of the museum or other decision makers where these will be deposited, indicated his/her desire or willingness to have such specimens and material? Please upload any mandatory documents of permission using the Field Document

Page 10: Human Tissues or Subjects Use of Human Tissue or Subjects If your proposal features the use of human tissues or subjects, on this page you will need to confirm that the study has been approved and enclose details of the approval. Research involving human participants is governed by principles outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki, the Nuremberg Code, and the Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS), all of which set out requirements with regard to the rights and safety of research participants and standards for research design and conduct. The Academy requires researchers to have the relevant regulatory and ethical approvals in place before the relevant research begins, although you may apply for funding before this. In the event of an award being made, commencement of any research involving human participants will be subject to these approvals being in place and sent to the Academy. Use of Human Tissue or Subjects Does your study involve the use of human tissue or subjects? Select Yes or No. If you have selected Yes it is mandatory to complete all of the relevant questions on the Use of Human Tissue or Subjects page Yes No Have you been granted approval for your proposed study? Yes No If yes, please enclose details of the approval. If no, please give details on when you expect to obtain approval and any impacts on the work proposed.

Page 11: Data management and data sharing The networking funding partners support research as an open enterprise, and are committed to ensuring that data outputs from research supported by the networking grants are made publically available in a managed and responsible manner, with as few restrictions as possible. Data outputs should be deposited in an appropriate, recognised, publically available repository, so that others can verify and build upon the data, which is of public interest. There is not a set format for data management and sharing plans. Where they are required, applicants should structure their plan in a manner most appropriate to the proposed research. The information submitted in plans should focus specifically on how the data outputs will be managed and shared, detailing the repositories where data will be deposited. In considering your approach for data management and sharing, applicants should consider the following: What data outputs will be generated by the research that are of value to the public? Where and when will you make the data available? How will others be able to access the data? If the data is of high public interest, how will it be made accessible not only for those in the same or linked field, but also to a wider public audience? Specify whether any limits will be placed on the data to be shared, for example, for the purposes of safeguarding commercial interests, personal information, safety or security of the data. How will datasets be preserved to ensure they are of long-term benefit? Outline of data management and data sharing plan If the proposed research will generate data that is of significant value to the research community, then please provide details of your data management and sharing plan (200 words max)
